Here's something cool I never realized existed:

PCBs distributed through magazines!

From Radio Electronics (June 1987):

@foone strange bubbling potion!!!

@foone you have me tempted to merge graffiti art techniques into freehand PCB pieces, develop, then sneak in circuitry!

@ai6yr hmmm I have a ton of those in my wigle database, Orbit Irrigation products apparently.

man I wish the ones at work here had a bluetooth interface and setup app instead of just an inscrutable rotary dial and buttons

I feel like I have never been seen before about my desire for a proper mainstream Android phone with a hardware keyboard than on Fedi

It feels like for the longest time I was the only one, but being on Fedi has shown me that… Wow… A LOT of people want this.

@astrid @yassie_j yeah I held onto an HTC Evo Shift until it lost support for.... everything

If there's one thing I know from '90s kitchens and bathrooms, it's that no one ever actually uses or eats the aesthetic stuff in fancy jars. That soap? Nah, that's the decorative soap. It's here to look pretty, so don't use it. We're out of noodles, too—those in the jar are strictly decor. https://www.eater.com/24105047/you-dont-need-to-decant-your-groceries-kitchen-storage

@MLE_online @stefthepef my childhood bathroom was only freed of those when an accident with an explosively failing shaving cream can propelled them into the toilet

Little secret about datacenter water usage: they actually don't USE nearly as much as they report-- they DRAW a lot of water yes, but they'll only cycle it a few times before giving it back, either through waste pipes or other ways, otherwise you get sediment buildup in the pipes and heatexchangers. The average golf course uses far more water, and actually uses it without returning any of it

And the alternative, is to use energy-heavy AC/heatpumps, which due to public outcry, is happening more.

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@anthropy where is it used anyway? evaporative cooling towers?

I'm looking for recommendations for things to help introduce someone to the world of electronics, both instructional materials and hands-on activities like kit building. I've run into a few people now who are really interested after learning about some project, like console modding or repair, and would love to increase their knowledge.

Someone on tumblr asked why 3.5" floppy disks seem so much more friendly (or "pleasant and edible" to use their terminology) than 5.25" floppy disks, so I wrote about it:

https://www.tumblr.com/foone/750216135935492096/why-do-35-inch-floppy-disks-seem-so-much-more

TL;DR: It's because Sony.

@foone I love your descriptions here so much

ai6yr, to EPCOT

What does it mean when most of the plants featured at Epcot's "The Land" are in my backyard? (most being grown in hydroponics) 🤔

(I don't think I can get a floating water ride back there, though).

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@ai6yr are you sure? I mean really all you'd need is to construct a long pool with a couple of circulation pumps pushing the water through it so it can propel a raft around :D

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@ai6yr oh THAT'S what the dragonfruit stalks look like? Dang, now I want to grow it! :D

Some weirdo or weirdos is retransmitting the entire broadcast of a local TV station and a local radio station on ham radio here in LA. They've been doing it for many days now.

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@MLE_online oh, that nonsense. hah. We had a jammer like that in Miami for a while, they'd settle in on a frequency at complete random in the afternoons.

That's assuming it isn't just some intermod product drama

just randomly buy another old hp/agilent power supply

you'll never regret another old hp/agilent power supply

vxo,

@recursive I have enough that I could easily bench test an old analog broadcast console that needs +/-18, +/-12, +5, and -48 (though this is usually optional and only needed if you are using the internal mic preamp and condenser mics)

I forget which the goofy one was I was working on that needed +/-18 and +/-12

Ok it's time for a thread about the sencore AT985 atsc RF monitor, tbh first time I ever heard about atsc so no idea what format is that, but hey look! a floppy drive.

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@kiwa some examples of the eye and constellation patterns can be found in this thread https://www.avsforum.com/threads/8vsb-rf-waveform-display.2960126/

the constellation at least, uh, looks like all the right parts are there - it should ideally be concentrated on the 8 vertical lines. When the dots start falling more left and right of them that usually implies weak signal / terrain impacts on the received signal, multipath, or distortion at the transmitter.

The hams are on the radio fighting again.

"You're a doped up, fucked up hood rat"

"Hood-rat-hood-rat, can't you see. You're ... uh ... about to go pee."

vxo,

@MLE_online the last time I messed with setting up a repeater controller, I used this cute thing that runs on a Raspberry Pi and uses a hat for audio i/o and gpio to watch for incoming carrier from the receiver carrier operated relay (COR) pin, key the transmitter up, and, well, pass audio. It could link your repeater to Allstarlink or other VoIP networks for extension over the internet, but, uh, sillier, it could play back recorded audio files for the ID...

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@MLE_online so a certain repeater up in the foothills of the Cascades might or might not have my voice on it saying the callsign and then "Powered by Tri-Color Foaming Wax."

vxo,

@MLE_online hmmm when I put up a Meshtastic router node on one of our towers I'll have to name it appropriately.

@MLE_online The only one I remember being decommissioned was the Mt. Bradley site way up in the north end of the state, because that moved to being part of a different repeater system. I think the ones near you should be working. If not you can sneak in via Echolink, K6LNK-R
