So, here's a fun fact: have you ever wondered how exactly U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt convinced Americans that Hitler was bad, considering he ran a country that was itself deeply racist and heavily antisemitic, had a sizeable fascist movement, and used much similar economic policies as Germany in the late stages of the Great Depression?

He framed it as supporting religious freedom, which the Nazis were encroaching on.

I didn't know that, until I read this bio.

One thing that this book barely mentions, curiously, is the Bitter Lake Agreement (also known as the Quincy Agreement), arguably one of the most influential things that the U.S. did in the 20th century. It shapes the Middle East to this day.

Here, he wasn't so hung up on religious freedom. So y'all want to force Wahhabism on a whole country? That's cool, as long as we can have your oil.

@chrisjrn Oh and we didn't even mention eugenics. That was another thing that 1930s Germany and 1930s 'Murica were very aligned on.

Looking at the world, I'm surprised not more people are pointing out that "AI at human levels" is really putting the bar on the floor.

@larsmb I think they're tearing up the floorboards and then applying pickaxes, shovels, and excavators prior to bar installation.

If you run speaker communications for a conference, be like Ernesto.

If you're arachnophobic, you understand that the problem is with you, not with the spider.

If you're hydrophobic, you understand that the problem is with you, not with water.

If you're homophobic, you don't understand anything. You're just stupid.

We're still happy and grateful that it did. Are you?

On this day in history: morning of June 6, 1944, the Brécourt Manor assault. If you ever needed an illustration that training in fundamentals, understanding and awareness of the situation, and small teams led by competent individuals as part of a large and meaningful undertaking where everyone knows what's at stake makes all the difference, this is it.

"Capitalism isn't the problem" is the new "guns don't kill people".

Seriously, anyone who argues that capitalism isn't to blame for this Recall thing needs their head examined. It's a train wreck from start to finish, it's horrible for pretty much everyone, and the only universe in which it makes a sliver of sense is one in which it is somehow okay for a tiny number of billionaires to get richer still.

When people quote Drucker saying "culture eats strategy for breakfast", some curiously appear to think that it only applies to bad strategy and good culture.

People who owe their entire adult existence, life in peace and stability, and economic prosperity to the EU and then have the goddamn gall to say "let's fuck it all up for those who come after us" ... it doesn't fucking matter if I try to "understand" them or "relate" to them; they're raging assholes.

Fediverse d'Azur, can you help?

Here is @eumiro in the middle of one of the more impressive lightning talks I've seen in a while.

At this point he's in the middle of discussing the 7th keyboard layout and with it on his 7th language, and I'm not sure if he was yet past the half-way mark.
