I play strategy games, write software, and stream on Peertube (not necessarily in that order). Also, sock monkeys! Preferred pronouns: he/him/his.

Doing a bit of maintenance on the peertube instance (operating system update). A reboot will be needed.

Later on, I might do a live stream of something. I haven't decided on what yet.

I just want to give a big thank you to all my followers out there for being . Between my cooking account and this one, I've got over 400 people who put up with my incoherent ramblings and I don't have to put up with some of the weirdos that lurk in these online spaces.

(Ok I did have to deal with one weirdo, but from what I've seen and heard that's a pretty good number of weirdos to deal with).

♥️

Our Technocratic Empire is growing! Can we keep our edge through the mid-game as we expand into our sector?

"Every developer should have to do a shift in support"

Ok so this sounds like a lovely idea in theory but I'm just going to caution you too be careful what you wish for.

Context: I used to work in tech support before I became a developer, so I am often on the phone with clients in my current job (it's one of the reasons my management loves me).

I'm going to tell you that not all devs are up to this task, however. (cont.)

One thing I am grateful for with is I'm not getting those emails about "my year in review".

Every time I got one of those from YouTube or Twitch I was just reminded how bad I was at maintaining my online presence in those spaces. 😅

Besides, my numbers on the new platform are much better than they were on the old proprietary ones by a mile.

One quick update: this week I am learning how to edit videos for upload and am deciding on an intro vid to use. Streams will resume soon.

I am having a hard time focusing on work today.

These stupid linting errors for a project I'm trying to port over to the latest version of our framework is not helping any.

I picked up some sushi today and I always try to get the rolls that don't have mayo on them because yuck.

So I brought mine home, opened it up, and realized they put the mayo on the bottom.

That some sneaky BS right there.

About once a month or so, someone in my feed will come up with the idea to create a website that serves as a human-curated directory of the web and I'm like, ah we have reached full circle. We're now reinventing the Open Directory Project.

(Which I think is a good idea, but it's interesting to see people come back to this idea over and over again).

I uploaded my first VLOG. Nothing fancy; just a bit of an introduction. I hope you enjoy:

Hoo boy, it looks like I'll be going an upgrade of my instance soon. Probably this weekend? Well see how it goes. I'll have to make sure I do a backup of my postgres database too. 😅

So I had a thought about something I see pop up on the fediverse from time to time: when someone posts a link to a non-fediverse website someone jumps in on their mentions to tsk-tsk them about linking to a non-federated platform.

I think this is bad.

Not only is this off-putting, but it violates the spirit of the internet. Federated websites should be allowed to interact with non-federated ones because both are part of a larger ecosystem, and trying to enforce "purity rules" is dangerous.

I got new interwebs today. I'm upgraded to gigabit for the first time, which will be kind of fun. Download all the things?

My gaming machine is hooked up to my internal network via powerline adapter so I'm not going to see huge gains there (I'm effectively capped at 40 Mbit upstairs but that's plenty fast for my purposes). However my upload speeds are definitely faster now. I don't think that will have a huge impact on my streaming as the bottleneck there is server-side.

But hey! Better tubes!

instance update:

I tried adding chat as a source in OBS. It technically worked but I couldn't get the look I wanted right. One problem with 720p is that text just looks blurry no matter how much bold you add to it.

I may try again, but I gave up for now. It wasn't a huge priority for me so I didn't want to spend too much time on it anyways.

Oh no, I just spotted my first platitude in GIF macro form on Mastodon.

I suppose it was inevitable, all things considered, but it was jarring nonetheless.

It's kind of weird how things have gone full circle.

30 years ago, of you wanted to get a hold of a company right away, you called them.

Then The Internet happened and email took over, along with web forms and live chat through their web sites.

But now those are all bot- and AI-driven, and many of the answers you get from them are unhelpful or just plain nonsensical.

So how is the best way to reach a company of you need to talk to them right away in 2023?

You call them.

The last two days have been hell because of cypress. Our node project requires it, but to download it I have to disable our VPN because it doesn't like our SSL certificate. And when I manage to pull that off the damn thing fails to install because of an ERR_REQUIRE_ESM error from one of its sub-dependencies.

God fucking damn it.

I just saw someone (one of the larger accounts) complain that Mastodon was a bad place to get real time updates on the war in Israel and Gaza, and I'm like what the hell are they talking about. My feed is like 50% updates on the conflict right now. And I've yet to see any real misinformation (except under the context of "watch out for this misinformation").

I'm thinking these people just might be bad at internetting. 😂

One of the biggest challenges I run into when doing code reviews is that often people try to be too clever with their solutions. It often leads to bad design because "clever" usually means "not in compliance with the how the makers of this XYZ library intended for their API to be used".

I have to frequently remind people that our role is that of a glorified plumber. We're not recreating the Manhattan Project here. 😅

One thing I've sort of felt about modern web development for years now is how far we've deviated from core web design principles when they were created the decades ago.

Now, I understand that it's expected for things to evolve and change over time. I get that. What I'm talking about is how, for example, web app designers treat web sites like infinitely malleable canvases from which they can create their custom masterpieces on.

People might ask, well, what's the big deal about that? (cont.)
