Due to my love of all things about giant robots, I've been trying to get back into watching the Evangelion series.

I'm liking it so far, but good god I absolutely cannot stand Shinji. I keep wanting to shake him around and yell into his face to get his head out of his ass.

I understand he was written this way (the "reluctant warrior") but still. The urge to smack him in the face every time he's on screen is strong.

I’m honestly less concerned that every species on earth is evolving into crabs and more concerned that HG Wells predicted this was going to happen in the 1895 novel The Time Machine.

@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

@dugglebutt I... wait-- oh my god...

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

@dugglebutt He was the first scifi author to depict a nuclear weapon in fiction decades before the actual bomb was tested and used in WW2. He was a little bit off on how it would work technically, but he accurately depicted its horrific effects both in the battlefield and on civilian infrastructure (including people).

The story is titled "The World Set Free", and it was written in 1914.

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

@dugglebutt All things, considered, being 9 feet from a nuclear blast is probably one of the more favorable outcomes one can expect from such a situation.

I hooked up two of these things to my wall outlets so i can have internet on the second floor of my house. Prior to this, I had 70 ft of cat 6e Ethernet cable running along the wall up stairs and across the room where my computer was set up. It worked, until one day the cable started dropping packets.

I looked at getting a repeater until I ran across these things online. I had heard of them but I want aware they were available for home use. According to the reviews, they worked great.

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

After testing it, I can confirm they do, in fact, work great. It's not quite as fast as a cat 6e cable, but I consistently get 40 Mbps d/l and 20 Mbps u/l which is more than enough for my purposes.

A couple of notes:

The reason Ethernet is so awesome is because it is somewhat resilient to EM interference. The wiring in your house was not designed to shield your packets like cat 6 was designed to do, so it is more sensitive to, say, the neighbors microwave going off.

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

Second, the ease of setting this up was phenomenal. I literally just plugged both units in, and it just works. There was a little additional setup to encrypt the network, but otherwise it was a no-brainer to set up

This is much better than using a WiFi repeater because of my outbound streaming activities (dropped frames are problematic). I absolutely would recommend. The price for this model was $70. There are cheaper ones that offer less bandwidth, and also more expensive ones. I like this one

I have spent so much time in my life writing this exact function

if (hashTable.contains(key)) {
return hashTable[key]
} else {
let value = new Value(complicated, construction, process, here);
hashTable[key] = value;
return value;
}

It seems like the simplest pattern in the world to abstract yet somehow no language seems to offer a way to do so without in the process somehow making things Worse

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

@mcc The code reviewer in me wants to point out that you don't need the else block. The early return is sufficient to stop the flow if the value is already set in the hash object.

I know that's besides your point but my eye twitched a tiny bit when I saw that in there. 😉

@Juju So I am 95% certain that applies to your main OS drive only. I recall having a near panic attack when I ran into a similar situation but it turned out to be fine, but this was years ago and my recollection may be faulty.

I would stream today but the ongoing issues with my network connection from my gaming PC forces me to hold off until tomorrow. Hopefully not only will this resolve my immediate issues but I can finally get rid of this ethernet cord I have to drape all over the place just to connect the upstairs to my cable modem. I'm crossing my fingers!

When I do start streaming again I'll be heading back to Twitch. Not sure if this will be permanent but it will be at least a temporary shelter.

I don't drive too much, but I do own a car, a 2012 Hyundai. It's getting old enough now where I have to wait to order parts when they are needed (like replacement brake pads). So now today I'm waiting for them to call me to let me know I can pick up my car at the dealership.

I have a loaner in the meantime. It's strange that all the new cars are getting Tesla-fied. Keys in ignitions are a thing of the past. A computer display on the dash. Mystery buttons that aren't well-labeled everywhere. 😅

I know that weather forecasting is more of an art form than science at times, but I sort of have to believe the models are broken when they continuously forecast a 50% chance of rain three days out that consistently fails to materialize.

We were forecast to have thunderstorms all week this week, or at least a better-than-even chance of them each day this week. So far? One slight drizzle. That was it. The rest of the week doesn't look too good, either.

@gdinwiddie I know how probabilities work. Two summers worth of flipping coins and having it come up as tails every time indicates the stated odds aren't really that accurate.

In the meantime, I'll be doing a few more streams playing games and talking about more serious subject matters. Today I will be resuming my base. Come visit me here while supplies last!

Some predictions I'll probably regret making later:

  • I feel like we will end up defaulting on our debt in June. I know we've been down this road before and we've always pulled a last minute deal but this feels different. The US House is under the control of an insurrectionist party and they are out for blood.

  • I don't think Biden will declare the 14th or "mint the coin". Both scenarios are fantasies.

  • I think the situation will last for several days at least. Longer maybe.

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

I am relieved that the debt ceiling was lifted, though I'm not happy with the process overall. Again, the GOP had shown taking the economy hostage is a working strategy and they will keep doing it again and again to get their way.
