Trying the preview of Tiflotecnia's new Vocaliser NVDA add-on. They're so responsive although I wouldn't use it all the time as I'm not a huge fan of the voices.
For some reason, they have the Fiona one under English (Seychelles), rather than English (Scotland).
There seems to be duplicate versions of voices at the same quality level for some reason.
I'd also like to see a voice preview button.

A thread on some of the games I played yesterday in Bury's Arcade Club.
I had a go on Daytona Championship USA with my wife giving me directions.
I could hardly hear the game with the din of everything else around it but I think that version tells everyone to start their engines, not just the gentlemen.
The forse feedback was annoying since it simulates crashes and whatnot by yanking the wheel, so it felt like I was fighting the thing all the time.
For some reason I ended up turning the opposite way to what she said and I rarely get my left and right mixed up. I dunno if it was because of how I held the wheel or what.
Also I don't do subtle. When my wife told me to turn, I'd more often than not turn the wheel hard right or whatever rather than just slightly. To be fair she didn't specify how far to turn it. I'd be dangerous on the road.

@KaraLG84 lol that is literally what the title of the game means, or close enough at least. super tea table flip

Hey @pixelate i’m trying to use WSL to run a bash script in windows, but I think I’m missing something because every documentation I am reading on it says that it’s best if I stay inside the virtual machine, whatever thing I am developing, like, I can’t run windows programs with WSL, but then, I’m like, then what’s the point of it? I think I’m missing something, so let’s say for example, if I have pandoc installed on windows but not in the linux virtual WSL thing. Can I use WSL to run the windows version of pandoc to convert files? Or do I need to run WSL and then install using a Linux package manager?

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@weirdwriter @pixelate you are meant to try to stay within the vm's filesystem particularly for things that take a lot of IO cycles. You can use apps outside of the VM, and that is usually something you'd do occasionally to call out to, say, a windows binary when and if you need it, but its generally best to stick with tools within WSL2 and within WSL2's filesystem

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@weirdwriter @pkiff @pixelate there's not. Bash instructions are for Bash, which doesn't run on Windows. so you could do "wsl your_bash_file_here" from WIndows, or just open up a bash shell and run the bash script directly from there

Hypothetical question. How would the world of 2024 look like if Jobs's famous 2007 iPhone demo failed?

For context, the iPhone software was notoriously unstable at the time, Jobs was given a list of actions he was supposed to follow, in a very specific order, which was, in theory, supposed to work. It did actually ended up working, but there was a very high chance of the whole thing going awry.

The iPhone completely revolutionized the phone market, in a way most people don't even appreciate. Multitouch screens and fancy animations were one thing, but what matters a lot more IMO is what it did to carriers. Most if not all smartphones that came before were deeply tied to their networks. Direct, computer-style TCP/IP communication with unaffiliated servers on the internet was rare. For example, BlackBerry used custom protocols and needed RIM hardware in your carriers datacenter, Europe was big on WAP, which was a weird binary version of HTTP that your carrier's gateway would translate to normal requests, while Japan was big on iMode, which essentially was its own walled garden which had little to do wwith the "big" internet. The ability to use a phone as essentially a small computer, using your carrier's network instead of WiFi, was pretty revolutionary.

A lot of people complain about Apple's ecosystem being a walled garden, but I'd rather have a somewhat developer-friendly, global, unified system under Apple than the fragmented, country-specific, carrier-specific mess that existed before.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@jscholes @miki I seriously do miss the simplicity of phones back then, not gonna lie. You could text, call and play music, and on the web, sites were generally super simplified for mobile. Google was literally a list of links you could just arrow your way through, I recall many a night of me just browinsg the web from my phone in bed. I HATE browsing on my phone now

Cool. Each time I start now, the AI Content Describer pops up a dialog that says:

> Some of the dependencies required for this NVDA add-on to run are not available on your computer. Would you like to download them now?

Except I have no idea what the dependencies are, how much space they'll take up, why they're needed, and if the add-on will work without them. All I can do is answer Yes to commit to something I don't understand, or No and keep being prompted by this nag message over and over again.

If you too are wondering what the heck this is all about...

  • The file downloaded for the most recent version of NVDA is aic-py-3.11.zip. It's 33.6 MB zipped, 105 MB extracted, and contains a bunch of Python packages includeing: cv2, html.parser, markdown, numpy, PIL, pygrabber, xml, and supporting files.
  • If you want to inspect it for yourself, head to: https://github.com/cartertemm/AI-content-describer/releases/download/libs-release/aic-py-3.11.zip
  • My verdict is that it's safe/acceptable to download, but I was initially worried it was going to download all of the pieces for local model support or similar.
zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@jscholes Interesting. I have seen the " this-does-everything"-style OpenAI addon do something similar, almost down to the letter in that message. So I guess thats where he got the idea but yeah ...that is rather interesting a distribution method

Ugh can we stop it with the " accessible for all" crap? The thing costs 3500 dollars. That alone makes it inaccessible to a huge part of the world, and I am disinclined to believe an accessibility verdict from a general-purpose news outlet that I'm pretty sure has very few people in the know on staff. I know I'm responding to a clickbait title but ugh ...that's kinda the point, others will, too, and it can really be detrimental

I haven't used Twitch outside of iOS in a long time. It's gotten a lot worse. Some pretty stupid keyboard usage and associated hints that make no sense if you have any idea how screen readers actually work, and at least with NVDA and Firefox, activating the chat tab seems to not work. The unlabeled button to open the player--and its subsequent disappearance after a few seconds--is the icing on the cake. You can tell there's lots of development work going into the accessibility and absolutely 0 testing.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@simon wait ...are you sure you have your screen maximized? Player's always open at least on Chromium at least. THings are pretty awful, just haven't seen that particular issue

Do we have anyone in the blind android world with a One Plus 12 or 12R? I really want to know if either of them run Eloquence. I have a suspicion that the 12R might run it and the 12 will not, because the 12R is one chip generation behind. But it could be disabled in software on Samsung/Google's end, in which case it should still run on all their phones.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@FluidEscence @jscholes @simon I personally wouldn't care all that much if it's slightly different, long as it talks as fast and smooth as OG eloquence does I'm no nostalgia nut. I'd rock eSpeak or similar and I even do on occasion but it tires my ears

Hey users: How problematic is it when people abuse alt texts to add image credits, license information, or URLs?

Of course I'm aware that it's not what they're intended for, and that, given the choice, you'd rather not have people do this, but how much of an issue is it in practice? I have never really used a screen reader, but I'd imagine you can just skip over an alt text like that, and that it's maybe just confusing for a moment?

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@scy if it's just the credit, and nothing else, it, quite frankly, is a misuse of alt text. Alt stands for alternative, so basically this would indicate that knowing who created/provided the image is analogous to knowing what the image depicts. It just doesn't add up.
It is absolutely skippable, you're right, but it's skippable in the way putting a logo over the " eat before" date on a food product is skippable. You probably won't be bothered too much, but an important field has been co-opted for an arguably less important datapoint at that given stage in the, let's say, image-viewing process
