holyramenempire, to random

I don't mean to be alarmist, but I keep seeing this misinformation everywhere, including from okay outlets like : There are NO!!!! exceptions to the FULL BAN on ALL transition medical care in Missouri that will take effect on Thursday April 27.

It doesn't matter if you've taken HRT for decades, have no sex organs anymore, or have additional medical reasons to take HRT. Your doctor will not be allowed to prescribe medication or surgery to treat gender dysphoria. There are requirements in the "emergency rule" that claim to allow you to continue HRT if you meet them...

BUT THERE IS NO WAY TO MEET THOSE REQUIREMENTS. How can you "resolve" autism, anxiety, depression, personality disorders?

zleap,
@zleap@qoto.org avatar

@holyramenempire What happened to the Hypocratic oath taken by doctors to 'do no harm'. Doctors and medical experts are now being forced legally to do harm if they are banned from treating people, so this surely conflicts with the oath.

While doctors may risk being prosecuted, they need to stand up and defend their oath and be able to practice medicine properly without interferance or being told to with hold that treatment. UNLESS they are advised to do so by a person with a medical degree and experience in medicine. Do Ron De Santis, Donald Trump et al behind this tick the medically trained professional box ?

zleap,
@zleap@qoto.org avatar

@holyramenempire If under normal circumstances you deny a person medical treatment without good reason and that person comes to more harm as a result you would expect to be struck off from medicine and perhaps in the USA sued.

Perhaps given the current circumstances you are being TOLD to deny treatment, explain this to patients, and say this is the current law, made by politicians xyz, and you in your medical professional opinion hold THEM accountable for damage done.

The medican profession need to stand firm, here and ensure you don't get blamed for consequences of policies that you know go against medical ethics.

I am sure patients, will be angry but hopefully understanding so they can aim their legal / civil action(s) at the right people.

After all, Jim Crow, convict labor, and lynching happened with near total impunity, and African Americans experienced decades of pernicious neglect from the federal courts and government."

They teach about this properly here in the UK, if I get a chance I will see if I can get a note added to the teaching notes that students should defend the REAL story and narrative so we can help counter new less accurate narratives.

Vale Barry Humphries

In a time when drag artists are being falsely accused of grooming and pedophilia, persecuted and losing rights, it is even more sorrowful to farewell a pioneer in the field of general and commercial entertainment.

Dame Edna Everage - megastar housewife from Moonee Ponds - was a regular fixture on Australian TV screens as well as the stage for literal decades. Humphries brought gentle satire, biting wit, and on point commentary to a nationwide audience, a groundbreaking presence that paved the way for others over time. While not queer himself, his work has softened access to opportunities for queer performers both in the antipodes and overseas. This was thanks in no small part to her oft-mentioned son Kenny, as her work often referred his wildly successful interior design business as well as life-long "friend".

A supportive, intelligent and incredibly hard working light has gone out in my personal firmament. Thank you for all your hard work Mr Humphries - I guess you are now burning a purple wig and gladioli in your personal fireplace.

Five months ago, before she died, my 91-year-old great-grandmother described to me how, while her mother was taken to the gas chambers by the Nazis, she asked her mother, "Where are you going?" and "When are you coming back?" zleap,
@zleap@qoto.org avatar

@gratefuldread

What I have found in the past is where teachers have 'tried' to enforce rules or instill discipline, the person causing the trouble kicks off with the 'I have rights' argument, this undermines teacher authority, but any student can do that.

So when a teacher tries to stop racist bullying they are told they can't as the purp has rights,so hands are pretty much tied, as the parents kick off too sometimes.

However victims are also just as likely to step out of line at times and then remind teacher sof their rights.

So teachers are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

If we want to create a society where people are safe and have the right to do things, go to school without fear, walk down the streets without fear. People also need to be held to account, so when they step out of line, they can be punished in a way that is appropriate and proportionate to their age, the crime and other factors.

That way also if victims of bullying / abuse come forward to disclose, they know the teachers are actually able to DO something about it, hopefully backed by the parents too.

In the case of disclosing abuse, teachers need to know that the local authorities will back them and investigate properly. Victims may come forward once, it takes al ot of bravery to do so, so that disclosure is a one chance to help that person.

    Regarding Twitter's permaban of Wired reporter Dell Cameron, I must reiterate what I have been saying for a while:

    If you're a reporter, or academic, or merchant, or anyone else who's depended on Twitter for some measure of their work, you need to leave before the choice is made for you. There is no degree to which you can keep your head down and do your job and be allowed to remain on the platform, unhindered.

    The best time to leave was yesterday; the second best time is now.

    "If you're a reporter, or academic, or merchant, or anyone else who's depended on Twitter for some measure of their work."

    Lets hope thatr fedi can be a real replacement twitter as far as commerce is concerned but we get the right balance as I do appreciate people don't want to be bombarded with advertisements, we need to ensure communication is two way, post info on my latest product, and interact with responses to that.

    Christianity does not have the right to decide for everyone else what is acceptable clothing, social or sexual relationships, culture, beliefs, or lifestyle.

    Would I be correct in thinking the following:

    It is almost as if the Republicans want the US to be a caliphate, but while Islamic State wanted the Quoran as the law, the Republicans want the Bible as law.

    In both cases either group have taken a legitimate relious text, found the more extreme interpretation and tried to make that the law.
