I really hate password/PIN code expiration. It WORSENS security, because you're forced to remember a new password/PIN and after forgetting it a few times will probably write it down. Or you might be tempted to use an easier to remember and less secure password.

NIST no longer recommends expiring credentials regularly. PLEASE STOP DOING THIS.

https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/26/23932667/linksys-velop-pro-wi-fi-7-mesh-router-discontinuing-app

"Linksys will start phasing out its router app as it relies on remote support and router AI features to keep your network online.”

MY GODS forget spiders and jack-o-lanterns, I'm going to print that on a sign and stick it in my front yard for Halloween as this is the scariest fucking thing I’ve ever read as an IT person.

"While briefing me on its new routers, Linksys said its customers have overwhelmingly told it that they just don’t like needing to use an app to manage their network”

NO NO WE MEANT we don't want to use an app, we just want to use a web browser connecting directly to the router, you incompetent clods!

I don't want AI or anything in the cloud managing my network or systems. I want to do it myself.

What the hell is going on with Linksys? Do they not see how this can go wrong???

Longtime Apple customers annoyed at having to buy new charger cables are going to find that annoyance short-lived as they realize just how cheap and plentiful USB-C cables are due to lack of an Apple tax.

How about instead of harassing pirates, the content industry provide a better product? Instead they've been making it worse over the past few years.

$12.99 a month and it still has ads ain't it.

I just walked in and solved a weeks long issue like this and I'm amazed that after multiple people looking at it NO ONE thought to try it. (It was an Extron DVI signal extender.)

Damn. The nickel and diming companies are pulling continues to get worse.

And the worst thing is that they're more profitable than ever. They're doing this because they can. It's disgusting.

Outlets and switches are such a small part of walls but holy shit does it make a difference when you replace old grimy ones with new ones. Totally refreshes a room.

Seeing the whole debacle with mastodon.art defederating tech.lgbt really has me thinking. Why are admins like this?

Unless there is a torrent of abuse coming from an instance, why not just let your users individually block the few problem people from another instance?

I've been on social media for 10+ years. I would never blame an entire instance for the actions of a few users. I would never want my instance admin to cut off the 5K people on another instance just because there's a couple dipshits there.

It feels like throwing out not just the baby but the entire bathtub and then the house out with the bathwater. And I'm downright miffed about it.

I really hate "AI" search results. DESPISE them.

What it is, in the end, is a completely unsourced answer. You're just getting a couple of paragraphs as an answer to your query, with absolutely NO friggin' idea where the information came from.

If you cannot vet information, it is WORSE than useless. It can cause damage if it's wrong. We're already seeing some scary and dangerous "answers" from Google's AI for example.

I much prefer a list of normal Internet search results. Sure, some of them might be COMPLETE bullshit, but at least I can see WHERE the information is coming from, and decide what to trust based on the reputation of the sites in question.

Just... No thanks, Google, Microsoft, etc. Please remove this garbage that's making your services worse.

I wish I had known back in 2005 that CRTs would someday be so valuable. I gave away several that were in amazing condition. All because I wanted more of that mythical thing called "space".

One irony about calling many Internet-connected devices "smart" whatevers is that in reality they're incredibly stupid.

Most "smart" devices depend 100% on servers on the Internet, owned by the manufacturer, to do anything. That's where the "smarts" live, and if the company goes out of business, or (more likely) decides to stop supporting the product, you quickly find out just how dumb it is.

And the sad thing is, most "smart" stuff just runs embedded Linux these days. Manufacturers could offer an option to enable SSH so technical people could do all kinds of neat stuff with them. But they don't, most likely out of fear of being sued because something got hacked.

Actually no, it's probably because they want to retain full control over what they sell you because they're greedy fuckwits.

Yeah, that's it.

I love finding stuff like this.

On an old Apple II floppy disk from my childhood, a BASIC program that has a list of random stuff I had in my bedroom.

What did a nerdy 11 year old tend to have in 1988? Let's see!

My gods the discourse about green vs blue messages on iPhones is so insane.

Who cares what color someone's messages are if you can communicate with them?

If someone gives you a hard time about green messages, consider that a good thing as that person has outed themselves as an asshole. It's a built in asshole filter!

It blows my mind that someone was so thrilled to successfully register a single letter domain name in the 90s that he's made it his entire identity and wants to use it for every single thing he touches.

Like, dude, it was the late 90s. Domains weren't that hard to get yet. It's not that special.

Damnit I hate GBICs. Two of these fuckers can look identical but one won't work in a specific switch because it's tagged with the wrong vendor or doesn't support some obscure feature the switch vendor stopped supporting.

So yeah. The gist of it is that even though the AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux folks are trying, the simple truth is that IBM/RedHat doesn't seem to want these distros to exist.

Given IBM/RedHat package and distribute RHEL, the fact that they don't want these distros to exist means that no matter what Alma or Rocky do, there will always be the risk of future disruptions to the availability of the distro and/or updates.

You can no longer rely on them.

Time to stop using RHEL-derived Linux. Personally I'm going to look into migrating my own systems to Ubuntu or Debian in the next couple years.

IBM, you suck. You are basically wiping your butt with the GPL and the concept of open source software.

I saw a discussion about ancient eBay accounts and had to check; created mine in 1999. The first few E-mails are wild, back and forths with sellers asking where to mail physical checks to pay for things.

First item I bought in 1999? Apple IIgs RGB monitor.

We've come a long way in 24 years. :)

No not the pay phones themselves. The booths, so you can find a quiet place to make a phone call on your cel in a noisy environment.

If anyone's watching Good Omens season 2 and the video looks a little jerky or weird, that's because it's 50fps video for some reason, this divides badly into 60fps so you get jerkiness.

Most dramatic TV shows are done in 24fps (film), but for some reason (maybe a UK tradition going back to PAL?), Good Omens is done at 50Hz.

To fix, configure your set top box or whatnot to output at 50Hz, or enable "Match Frame Rate" if it has that option.

Suddenly, smooooooth Good Omens!
