Good morning, Annie. :)

I really hate "AI" search results. DESPISE them.

What it is, in the end, is a completely unsourced answer. You're just getting a couple of paragraphs as an answer to your query, with absolutely NO friggin' idea where the information came from.

If you cannot vet information, it is WORSE than useless. It can cause damage if it's wrong. We're already seeing some scary and dangerous "answers" from Google's AI for example.

I much prefer a list of normal Internet search results. Sure, some of them might be COMPLETE bullshit, but at least I can see WHERE the information is coming from, and decide what to trust based on the reputation of the sites in question.

Just... No thanks, Google, Microsoft, etc. Please remove this garbage that's making your services worse.

zorinlynx,
@zorinlynx@tiggi.es avatar

I don't think I've ever had such an intense, visceral disgust for something new on the Internet than I've had for this. I hate it far more than I hated stuff like NFTs and cryptocurrency, because at least those things you had to make the choice to get involved, and could choose not to participate.

This "AI" garbage is being shoveled at us without our consent. It needs to die already.

zorinlynx,
@zorinlynx@tiggi.es avatar

Also, I think companies like Google and Microsoft have a social responsibility to NOT do things like this.

Not everyone is careful about the sources of knowledge they consume. Too many people will read the "AI" answer to a query and take it as gospel without putting any thought into whether it's legit information or not.

This WILL cause harm.

Damnit I hate GBICs. Two of these fuckers can look identical but one won't work in a specific switch because it's tagged with the wrong vendor or doesn't support some obscure feature the switch vendor stopped supporting.

I watched the 4K77 fan release of Star Wars last night. Basically the movie exactly as it would have looked in theaters in 1977, scanned from original 35mm prints at 4K.

It was glorious. It had this wonderful analog feel to it, with real film grain and everything.

Hearing about all the “AI” shit Apple plans to shove into iOS 18 might make iOS 18 the first release I don't upgrade to immediately until I'm sure it doesn't end up ruined by that plague.

#Texas is losing Californian transplants again. No surprise to me, as Texas politicans use Californians as rhetoric bait—at the same time boasting about how Californians are moving into the state to create the next Silicon Valley in Austin, while simultaneously scapegoating Californians as disgusting commie liberals invading their state, lumping them together with “illegal immigrants” in their xenophobic rhetoric.

Not said in the article is the fact that Texas law is hostile to non-cis-het people, especially those with a uterus. You can’t pay me enough money to relocate to Texas (or any number of southern red states), because that would add a mortal risk, if not to me directly, then to someone close to me.

The recent influx of tech workers to Texas was a mirage anyway, fueled more by tax giveaways than any systemic change. Now that the money has run dry, companies are finding a different state to fleece.

“Texas Attracted California Techies. Now It’s Losing Thousands of Them.”

@drahardja I wonder how long it will take these politicians to realize these policies are a losing proposition long term. Nobody with a brain wants to live in states with such repressive laws. And you need brainpower for success.

This was a lot harder than it looks. Playing with touchscreen controls was like a massive handicap! But I finally did it. :)

(Tetris Gameboy, B-type level 9 high 5)

Also I always wondered why Nintendo put a high score name entry when it wouldn't even be preserved after a power off!

zorinlynx, to random
@zorinlynx@tiggi.es avatar

So this wall timer, which would lose its settings on almost every power blip, has a 5V, 1 farad capacitor in it. Presumably to preserve its settings during a power outage.

The thing is, sometimes it worked. The power could go out for an hour and it would be fine. But other times the power would just blip briefly and the timers (I have three) would get totally scrambled.

I just replaced the light fixture outside with one using a photocell, and swapped this garbage for a plain switch. The other fixtures arrive next week.

One in five milk samples has bird flu virus fragments, suggesting cow Infections are far more widespread than originally thought.

Pasteurization kills the virus so you are safe if you consume pasteurized milk products. Raw milk products are not safe. You can get sick from them.

Another thing dad mentioned is bird flu outbreak farms had many dead cats. Looks like bird flu may be killing cats.
Spread the word.

@Eka_FOOF_A Who drinks unpasteurized milk anyway? It would last maybe... a day, before spoiling? Unless you happen to live on a dairy farm, it just seems unlikely.

It really bugs me just how many people in the tech industry seem to be okay with fascism. Like, we should be smarter than that, right?

But no, apparently not. And because the tech industry is so directly involved in our ability to communicate and spread information, this is a problem.

How about instead of harassing pirates, the content industry provide a better product? Instead they've been making it worse over the past few years.

$12.99 a month and it still has ads ain't it.

zorinlynx,
@zorinlynx@tiggi.es avatar

One thing that I will make clear is I never want a show or movie I'm watching to be interrupted by an ad EVER again, if I'm paying for it.

That's it. Just, NO. Fuck that. I will torrent everything if it means not seeing ad interruptions.

That was an artifact of a PAST era. Free over the air TV. It made sense to have ads to pay for the content, and that was acceptable.

But if I'm paying for it? HELL TO THE FUCKING NO. Shove it, streaming companies.

zorinlynx,
@zorinlynx@tiggi.es avatar

And yes I realize free over the air TV is still a thing, but it's less of a thing every year.

And I still have no problems with ads there. It's a fair trade.

zorinlynx,
@zorinlynx@tiggi.es avatar

@yakkoj Yeah I was reading about that and I wonder why the hell the FCC is allowing it. Encrypted content does not belong on public airwaves.

zorinlynx,
@zorinlynx@tiggi.es avatar

@yakkoj I think the problem is, not enough people still watch OTA TV to be enough to influence the FCC to make good decisions here. It's become niche; it's not like in for example 1985 when most of the country had an antenna on their roof.

zorinlynx,
@zorinlynx@tiggi.es avatar

@yakkoj Also, LOL, came across this article when searching for info about ATSC 3.0.

They really bungled this up. I hope it dies on the vine.

question: De-smellifying trash cans, specifically ones exclusively for litterbox waste?

I got some really good tight-sealing trash cans that control the smell very well, except they're SO well sealed that the inside is like...nuclear. Tried spraying one down on the inside with some Method cleaner and didn't seem to matter much. Airing it out with the windows open, also limited effect.

zorinlynx,
@zorinlynx@tiggi.es avatar

@SirTapTap Hope you don't mind my responding to an old post (I had to see more photos of your kitties!)

I use an old Tidy Cats litter bucket, which has a lid, for old litter. It stops the smell when closed but doesn't seal perfectly so it doesn't get nuclear (in my experience).

I also use plastic bags each time I scoop the box, and tie them so the smell is mostly confined to in the bag.
