Lets not create artificial animosity between communities just because the admins of one instance have been understandably overwhelmed by a huge influx of new users. That community existed before the reddit exodus so it is understandable that their primary goal is not growth regardless of the cost. Not to mention they are completely right about lack of proper moderation tools.

People are not moving over here for convenience, it's new young software with many flaws and missing features. I think most of us are just looking for a brighter future of social networks, one not dictated by a megacorporation and instead segmented more under our individual control. It's impossible for this to match reddit in everything since that's a company with thousands of employees and a 10 year headstart, but perfect shouldn't be an enemy of good.

Same tbh, I don't want to see it but I think it's a hard pill to swallow that eventually it's gonna go down the same route other massive companies have. It is amazing it held up so well this far, probably thanks to Gaben himself.

My biggest fear is steam workshop tbh. So many games depend on it that it's become synonymous with modding for many users, which hurts games not on steam or mods not on the workshop. I know I'm preaching to the choir here but such massive centralization and monopolization can't be good. Especially since the steam workshop isn't even that good - it lacks many features that other mod portals or managers have, like version control, preset switching, virtual installs, or even something as simple as mass subscribe/unsubscribe or a sortable list.

Killjoys and Dark Matter were such guilty pleasures of mine. I know it's all the common sci-fi tropes, I know it's cheesy as hell at times, but it was the perfect show to just relax with in the evenings and have some fun.

I also do love Expanse but sometimes you just want something that doesn't take itself that seriously. I miss having sci-fi shows like that.

Kaldo,
Kaldo avatar

Yeah, and from the writer+producer of SG-1 too! I guess DM was just too expensive compared to Killjoys, maybe because of a larger cast.

Kaldo,

I've somehow never gotten around watching Farscape despite being into sci-fi for decades (have seen babylon 5, stargate, star treks, firefly, etc). Is it too late to watch it now, how did it age?

It's not using activityPub but isn't the principle idea kinda the same? Revolt is open source and you can host your own server, and then each user can decide to which one to subscribe to using the client.

The servers are not talking to each other per se (I don't really see the need for that anyway in software like this), but your client will look a lot like a fediverse once you populate it with dozens of different instances of revolt. At least that was my understanding of it, correct me if im wrong.

People just generally become very defensive when it comes to stuff like this. Instead of being happy other people are trying to engage with it, that they are excited about the potential and how it's gonna grow in the coming months or years, they fear the change. It's completely human nature but also something that requires active effort to recognize and get over. I too am looking forward to what happens with fediverse, but I think its apparent to anyone that it's still in a very young phase and requires a lot of work to get it to a more usable state - the recent situation with beehaw, federation options and moderation tools is a great example of stuff we're still missing and need to improve on.

I am very excited about the new fractal! It's probably my favorite content in gw2 after raids so getting some love for it after all this time is neat.

Kaldo,
Kaldo avatar

And they do have a good precedent with it too, witcher 3 expansions were better content than core game, well worth the asking price. If this one is even half as good, I'm in.

Kaldo,
Kaldo avatar

V is still sick and there's a lot of Johnny content in the expansions so I'd say that clears it up pretty well - this takes place before the final mission. I also read rumors that it adds a new ending to the game too.

I think there's still no NG+, unfortunately.

Why are you not seeing as many posts from Lemmy communities on Kbin?

Hello! You may have noticed that the majority of posts and threads in your feed on Kbin are from within the platform itself. This is because the admin has activated Cloudflare DDoS protection which basically slows down requests to kbin, to prevent the website from experiencing downtime or becoming slow to respond....

Kaldo,
Kaldo avatar

Is there a way to customize which magazines get displayed in the top bar or is it always random ones?

Kaldo,

Same, I don't have the time and patience anymore to get good at pvp games so I was looking forward to this as a pve oriented RTS, but I am still a bit confused if that is actually the case. Seems to have a lot of micro and its going to have pvp (1v1 seems to be the focus) so it means that they will have to balance it around that... I'm really curious to see how it turns out.

Kaldo,

The improvements to base game sound very exciting. I though the game wasn't that bad, just held back by terrible leveling/perk/gearing/crafting mechanics that get in the way of actual fun. The game could finally end up being what it was supposed to be on day one

It's extra confusing since if I click on the plus in top right, I get all of these as options. Wouldn't that mean that all of these are just types of threads, as in article is a text post/thread, photo is an image thread, etc?

Basically, thread = submission in reddit terms?

And it's just a comment, it's never called a post in this context, at least based on the button that I'm about to click to send this? Top level comment doesn't start a thread, right now it says that the thread owner is "VerifiablyMrWonka" whos the author of the whole thread, not the commenter.

Thank you so much for your support! 😍

I just saw an email from Buy Me a Coffee. Not just one. I went in, and I'm truly shocked. Thank you all for the support; I would like to thank each and every one of you individually someday. Honestly, I don't know what to say. The account balance is $350, which will definitely allow me to develop kbin faster or at least not...

You make a good point but at the end of the day, the best you can do is choose the lesser evil, not let perfect be the enemy of good. We don't know if Ernest has skeletons in his closet but we do know that lemmy does and they aren't ashamed of them.

Every AAA has been trying to push the $70€ price as the standard despite games nowadays also coming with lower quality, less support and built in MTX stores. I have a feeling a bethesda game won't be any different, but people are just starved for open world RPGs...

Arbitrary gear level in games that dont need it. I hate comparing numbers on 2 identical shotguns, constantly looting stuff in case they have a better roll... I get it in games like a looter shooter or ARPG but it's becoming increasingly more common in story based singleplayer games too.

I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy cyberpunk 2077 a million times more if each weapon and armor piece had fixed stat and enemies were balanced around that, or if in dying light 2 I could actually use the weapons I like instead of having to switch to the objectively better item I just picked off the ground because now modded legendary item is now obsolete...

Kaldo,
Kaldo avatar

I read about Revolt but haven't looked too much into it. Seems like a fediverse based discord clone at first glance?

Kaldo,
Kaldo avatar

Yeah probably, someone said you can host your own servers and maybe connect to others so I kinda jumped to the comparison. Just wanted to bring it up since it's open source

/kbin - Just Reddit Things update

Hey, once again, I welcome the newcomers. It's great to see new faces here :) It seems that we've managed to resolve the server issue. Unfortunately, I had to temporarily disable certain features, such as content auto-refresh. It will be restored at the beginning of next week after the infrastructure change, so you'll get to...

Kaldo,

Well said, the dream really is for people to start hosting their own instances instead of everyone just coming here.

Also, as the number of federated instances increases isn't it going to cause exponentially more overall traffic since every instance will have to start pinging others in order to populate the landing page, it's gonna be quite a web with many requests instead of just one as it'd be on reddit or other centralized sites?

Kaldo,
Kaldo avatar

I am very confused about the mastodon integration tbh. Is every thread on kbin also shown as a post on mastodon? Is every comment? Are you supposed to tag threads or comments with hashtags?

Or in the "microblogs" section, I guess that is just normal mastodon posts... how do you subscribe to anything there or is it always specifically local mastodon posts for the current instance, or maybe even for a specific community? Are you supposed to tag stuff there or is it automatically tagged based on where you wrote them for?

Also, on a more abstract level, what is the purpose of microblogs? Is it supposed to be a twitter area where users post their daily experiences and personal stuff, or should it be always relevant to instance/community?

It's just such a weird amalgamate of social networks...

Kaldo,
Kaldo avatar

Ok that's pretty damn interesting and wild, I will have to wrap my head around it somehow. Thanks for an in-depth explanation!

Got Deathloop for cheap on a sale and decided to give it a try since the future doesn't look too bright for Arkane. It's actually not that bad, the game ain't too hard and it doesn't require a lot of brains but it's charming enough, it has a novel idea and the repeating cycle where you learn something new every new day is really addicting and fun.

I feel like it could have been a really great game if they had more time to add some content or interlinked quests, maybe an expansion down the line. What is there is fine but it does feel a bit repetitive later, you figure out the main goal reallllyy fast and then they even handhold you further during it. If it had more variables or combinations to experiment with it'd be 10/10.

Also dropping the official blogpost about the changes https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/topic/131631-june-27-balance-update-preview/

Looking forward to the update tbh, not having to spam herald facets off cooldown sounds like a nice improvement. Wish they also addressed FB mantras in this update but hopefully it's not forgotten, just delayed
