That's fair, I'm not a fan of big bulky ones (which is most mens watches) but something nice and slim with a good aesthetic and some shiny bits to catch the light can be a really piece of jewelry on the right occasion.

smollittlefrog, in Male vs female gaze rule

Women have differing tastes. Men on the other hand all like the same.

Just like many women don’t like extreme muscley figures many men don’t like extreme hourglass figures.

Not all women are the same. Not all men are the same either. Claiming otherwise is sexist in both cases.

Crozekiel,

I feel like your strawman missed the point. No one claimed all men or women are the same, and literally no one said "Women have differing tastes. Men on the other hand all like the same." (or even tried to make that point)...

smollittlefrog,

Did I misunderstand the post?

The point seemed to be that sexualization of men and women is different because not all women like the typical sexualized male man (as per the example given). That being different implies that men do all like the typical sexualized woman. Which is wrong.

(edit: just realized I did a reverse menandfemales)

https://pictrs.blahaj.zone/pictrs/image/65a49e6b-bf3c-4cf1-82ce-0f223ac8dadb.jpeg?format=webp

Crozekiel,

I believe you did misunderstand the post.

The post is commenting that both men and women characters in comics are drawn for men. The male characters are aimed at the broad average male power fantasy, not a broad average sexualization that would appeal to women (the way the female characters are drawn for the broad average appeal of men).

When the woman in this comic strip draws Batman in a way that is sexually attractive to her (which is a similar broad strokes "catch as many women as possible" approach comics already use for men), the man in the comic became uncomfortable seeing it. The point is that if they drew male characters in comics with the same approach that they draw female characters, then generally men would feel as uncomfortable by it as women generally feel now.

GBU_28,

But the person you replied to said not all men like the comic book “hourglass” figure

smollittlefrog, (edited )

the man in the comic became uncomfortable seeing it

I don’t understand this point. The reason they’re uncomfortable with it is because they’re drawn in a sexualized manner? But even if all else is true, men in comics are already drawn in a way that many men think is attractive.

At least that’s how I understand the point of the “power fantasy”. Or do they mean literal physical strength with the “power fantasy”? Because the sexualization of men is definitely not limited to muscles.

Assuming the power fantasy is not just about physical strength, but also (or only) about extreme attractiveness (as perceived by men):

That is an idea that could be true. Are there statistics about how close the typical male hypersexualization is to women’s interests compared to how close the typical female hypersexualization is to men’s interests?

Crozekiel,

Honestly dude you lost me when you started forcing a "ph" in the word fantasy over and over. Can't take this conversation seriously anymore. I've explained it for you, but alas I cannot understand it for you.

smollittlefrog,

I’m not a native english speaker. I’m sorry if my spelling makes my comments difficult to read.

I think I mostly understood the point by now.

(I still don’t get why the man would be uncomfortable with the alternative hypersexualization, since he already perceives the initial depiction as hypersexualized, but that doesn’t seem to be central to the point anyways.)

killeronthecorner,
@killeronthecorner@lemmy.world avatar

You did understand their point, they just didn’t argue it well.

Crozekiel,

Ah, no worries, I thought it was some sort of weird mind games being played so I stopped trusting the sincerity of your posts - my apologies.

The tricky part you seem to be hung up on is that the guy thinks that the male characters are hypersexualized for women, but in reality they are more drawn to be the power fantasy of men - the ideal / fantasy version of themselves essentially. So when the woman draws an "actually hypersexualized" male character, it makes the man uncomfortable. Thus he feels, briefly, what the woman feels reading most comics most of the time.

Xoriff,

(as perceived by men)

I think this is the point. It's that both men and women are drawn in a way that attempts to appeal to men and less so what appeals to women (this is what men think ideal-woman looks like. This is what men think ideal-man looks like). This causes side-effects, galore.

balderdash9,

You’re implying that the average women isn’t attracted to a Jason Mamoa or Chris Pratt -type gymbod. Although I know not every woman is attracted to big arms and abs, it seems that most do. Hell, even straight guys can see that these dudes are hot.

$1000/day, no qualifications, no details is more likely a scam than human trafficking. Maybe porn or something illegal.

asteriskeverything,

The only way I see it as a possible human trafficking is that this is the method to find people in desperate situations with low street intelligence and very little support network. I don’t think human trafficking especially the way it is reported on news and social media etc isn’t as widespread as it seems or happens the way they warn.

Scam is most likely, imo.

Maeve,

It absolutely could be a simple scam, porn, or human trafficking. Maybe all three.

Maeve,

Dunno, but they’re still making it, and considerable risks are involved, so I’d imagine those actors not trafficked are getting paid?

Calling Burger Becky just the winner of an eSports tournament is underselling how badass this woman really is. Nothing against the post, I like it because it shows that we’ve always been here, but Burger Becky is a straight LEGEND in gaming.

So first, why am I calling her Burger Becky? Because that was her office nickname because she had a drawer in her desk specifically to keep hamburgers. That’s not what makes her legendary, but still is.

Then Rebecca was one of the founding members of Interplay. As in OG Fallout Interplay. She was one of the lead developers of Wasteland, the Bard’s Tale series, Out of This World and many others. After founding interplay, she went on to do a lot of port work. Her work on the 3DO version of DOOM is an insane story, Stop Skeletons From Fighting has an amazing video on it.

Later in life, she moved onto consultant work. From Wikipedia “During this time, she also provided consultancy work directly for other companies: She acted as “Senior Engineer III” for Electronic Arts, upgraded engine code for Barking Lizards Technologies and Ubisoft, optimized code for Sensory Sweep Studios, acted as senior software architect for Bloomberg L.P. and Amazon, provided training on Xbox 360 development for Microsoft’s development studios, and worked on the kernel code for the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 4 at Sony.” Nowadays, she runs a company called olde skuul, probably best known for porting Descent 1 & 2 to modern machines.

I’m skipping over a lot of things because her legacy is fucking huge. An extremely famous game developer who has been extremely important to the history of the craft.

Unless that drawer had a built in cooler… yikes, did Burger Becky get food poisoning a lot??

LeylaaLovee,

Quote from an interview with her

Becky: And then when we had dinner with the family, I was the one serving the meals while everybody else was eating around there. And of course I didn’t get a plate. And then by the time it was all done, I would eat the leftovers. And of course if they saw me eating the leftovers, I would get punished.

Adam: As an adult, she’s never totally gotten past this food insecurity. Coworkers would spread rumors about her hiding burgers in her desks to nibble on when no one was looking.

Becky: Honestly, there’s truth to that. I was not picky about the condition of the food I was eating because I was conditioned from my earliest memory to the time I got out of that hell hole that food is life. Don’t be picky about it, because otherwise starving is your only other option.

dingus,
@dingus@lemmy.ml avatar

Brutal! That legitimately makes sense even though the food going bad still makes me nervous. However, mild food poisoning can be better than completely starving, I suppose. What an awful upbringing to be put through. It’s always amazing the travesties some amazing people have pushed through to achieve so much.

Walk_blesseD,
@Walk_blesseD@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah, exactly. Me too.

LeylaaLovee,

Yeah, I don’t think this meme gets it all the way, but I still think it’s funny. Pretty much anybody in a marginalized group forced around non-marginalied people, the marginalized people have to perform. Like women being forced to wear makeup for men, or black people being forced to code switch when talking to white people.

Cis people do go to extreme lengths to perform gender, but it simply isn’t as important for cis straight white men. Elon Musk got more hair because it made him feel better, not because he needed to not be bald if he was ever going to be considered a man. Elon doesn’t have to code change or anything of the sort, he doesn’t have to adjust to anybody. If Elon Musk was a black guy or a woman, he’d be far more hated because it’s not okay for anybody except cis white men to act like that for some reason. Elon is an extreme example, but I’m sure we all know some C grade white guys that love to act like that. Where if they weren’t white guys, nothing in their life would work because of how little effort they actually put in.

I think this meme is just trying to highlight that marginalized people have to put far more effort into their identity than non-marginalied people. Whenever I’m talking to other trans people, I am the kid putting cookies in the oven because I really don’t try too hard and I just do what comes natural. But the second I’m going to be around cis people, I am a French chef tweezing off every individual hair from my face so nobody notices, essentially trying to create the perfect plate to distract from my AGAB.
