squirmin,

I was in 1st grade, I think, and it was the middle of a snowy winter. My friend and I were playing "knock the snow off the tree branch" in the back yard with ski poles.

One of those ski poles got stuck in the tree.

Me being the bright boy I was, I decided to climb the tree to retrieve it. To give you a vision of what I looked like, I was decked out in my snow pants, jacket, boots, and gloves. Basically the kid who was mummified in his own winter gear in Christmas Story.

If you have ever worn those rubber snow boots that were super cheap back in the day, you will know that they do not have great traction, especially while climbing trees. So there I was about 10 feet up, standing on a branch to try and wiggle the ski pole free and I slipped and fell.

What saved me from a broken neck was I reached my arms out over/under my head as I was falling and ended up doing a handstand, then collapsed. This broke both of my wrists at the exact same time. I spent the next several weeks in splints and casts until my wrists had healed.
