shakouteki,

There's been a couple of times in the last few years that I've looked into Reddit alternatives. My willpower to figure out a new system had never overcome the clunkiness of the alternatives. But now, given the clunk inherent in new.reddit and its first party app, I've forced myself to look into alternatives. And the alternatives are much more polished and active than they were before. Obviously I have to grant a bit of leeway to these nascent sites, but it really does feel like the internet back around 2005-2012. In fact, it's brought up a bit of nostalgia on my part and some re-evaluation of whether endlessly scrolling Reddit (or anything really) actually made a positive impact to my life.

I've forced myself to use Kbin, Lemmy and Mastodon, and ventured over to Tildes and Bluesky as well. It's exciting to see so many promising alternatives to Reddit. The userbases are also very manageable. I don't feel like I'm typing in the void, but still feel like there are enough people to have a good variety of voices.

All that said, I'll still use old.reddit for some niche communities, but will try to be more and more active in the alternatives.

I'm keeping my feet in two shoes for now, at least until they kill old.reddit for good - already I won't use it on mobile as Apollo will die soon.

One thing is for sure - I used to do efforts to produce good quality posts or comments on Reddit and help/support the communities/subs I was part of, but now I'm reluctant to do so and relinquish such IP to Reddit.

I'll be read-only there and contribute here in kbin.social and the fediverse as it grows.

I'll likely continue using Apollo while I still can until the API token is deleted. I plan on fully switching to fediverse sites for the most part. Unless I really need to lookup something specific and reddit seems to have the answer. I'm enjoying Kbin a lot though so I plan on staying for a while :)

Ultra980,

I like the Fediverse more than Reddit. Even if /u/spez steps down, they remove ads and make the API free again, I still won’t return.

I feel I'm in the same boat. I much prefer this experience than the reddit one.

I'd assume most of the hordes hitting fediverse equivalents will go back to reddit tomorrow. Same thing happened with Twitter migration back in Nov -22.
Personally I don't have reddit accounts anymore, so nothing to go back to.

I saw Digg die. I’ll watch Reddit die. And one day I’ll see Kbin die but for now, I know it’s got some growing pains to work through. Reddit has turned into post after post of “deleted” and I’m done with it.

No, I deleted all my Reddit Accounts, even before the blackout. Reddit had their chance and fucked it up.

I took Reddit off my phone and off my browser's bookmark bar. I don't know if I'll be staying here (I'm just trying it out), and I don't know if I'll end up anywhere else, but one thing I do know is I'm not going to go back to reddit.

I like the idea and concept of federation. Most of the implementation of kbin is good and has very good potential to become something solid. So I'll stick around for a while.

AmericanScream,

I am a mod of multiple subreddits with large amounts of users. In some cases we may stay dark; in others we may go online - we let the community decide in each case.

HOWEVER... those that go online will NOT BE THE SAME. We never focused any of our discussion on whether the mothership was evil. Now that's likely to happen. No matter how narrow the topic of a subreddit is, there are now some additional relevant topics to discuss including:

  • Other social media communities we need to extend the brand/community to
  • Our ongoing, dissatisfaction with the owners of Reddit and how they disrespect the community that gave them all their value
tiredofsametab,

Until there's a good replacement for a couple of communities (such as those of us living in Japan and the specific issues and advice related to that), I will go to two subreddits, but that's it. Hopefully, the community will move somewhere like here.

I'd be inclined to start some magazines myself to replace the subreddits I miss and hopefully draw in some contributors, but I don't know anything about moderating and don't want to get stuck doing it.

nerfzeri,

@aughisky i plan to continue getting used to kbin.

I had know idea that the fediverse existed before all this, but now that I do, I'm very excited to see where it goes. Before the shut down, tried to find alternatives to the subs I visited the most often, and and left any that I found an alternative. That left me with 10 subreddits. A few more equivalents have been created over the past day, so I may go back to reddit for 2-4 niche subreddits that remain, but will try to help build communities for those topics here.

heelicopter,

I'm sticking around. I have no hope that Reddit will get better, so I may as well got cozy with the Fediverse. As for the growing pains of Kbin, I'm okay with that.

Well we've got to go back to herd more of the flock over here! Kbin is my first port-of-call on the internet now. When Reddit Sync is killed there will be no browsing from my phone ever again. One day they will kill old.reddit on desktop and the site will be totally useless.
