@tauonite
I'm liking it a lot! Love that we can shout over the fence to our neighbors. :)

datavoid,

All fun and games until meta shows up and everyone goes back inside

avividtale,
avividtale avatar

@datavoid

I really wish meta would just leave the fediverse alone. I have plenty of friends who use those systems, but I am able to connect with them elsewhere.

tauonite,

Right now it's shouting over the fence to talk between Kbin and Lemmy, it's a bit clunky and buggy. Hopefully that fence can over time lower and be completely removed as the code gets better and better. Looking forward to having a great time with you guys!

DumBirb,

I'm still confused how this works. I can barely tell the difference between what comes from lemmy vs kbin. It seems like its all just mixed together in my feed. Does it only matter if I try to post or comment on something from lemmy?

Also, is there a way to subscribe or unsubscribe from other things in the fediverse? Or is it all just automatically linked at the instance level and I don't do anything at the account level?

CoderKat,
CoderKat avatar

In general, no, it makes no difference. You can subscribe and block subs identically to local subs.

papertowels,

As far as I can tell, Lemmy vs kbin is like outlook vs Gmail. They communicate with each other due to an agreed on interface (email) but the implement is different

heimchen,

With jerboa(android mobile app) everything seems to work fine.

betsysoul,

Just installed Jerboa today, so far most is going smoothly. Though, it's a bit difficult to add individual Kbin communities.

cloaker,

True, but a lot works well. I can browse subs through the front page or sub really easily on KBin. I'm not a fan of how every federated sub says owned by @ernest though.

avividtale,
avividtale avatar

@cloaker

@tauonite

I'm still learning the ropes. I agree a lot works well, but I'm always happy for things to become easier and more accessible. I love the idea that as people find their different niches across platforms and servers that work well for them, it's still possible to maintain that connectivity.

cloaker,

Absolutely want things to improve and such. Ernest is crazy the work he does.

avividtale,
avividtale avatar

@cloaker

Honestly, I have found Kbin to be a really solid experience. I think it pulls off a lot. so when I say I'm always happy for things to improve, I really just mean I'm happy for them to grow into themselves. :)

CoderKat,
CoderKat avatar

I'm also hoping it becomes clearer soon where a post is located. Currently kbin just says the short community name (without the domain) and for self posts ("articles"), it says the link is on whatever domain you're currently on (eg, kbin.social). That's like how Reddit self posts did it and it's technically correct since you're viewing the post on the current site, but it's misleading and confusing given that the original post is on a different instance.

I keep posting this everywhere, but the Kbin enhancement script has an option to fix that.

Hello from the other siiiiiide.
Our sorting algo is diiiiiivine.
Content is more varied,
Not shuffled poorly.
The front page looks better,
Doesn't scroll rapidly.
... That's all I've got.

@tauonite hello from mastodon 👋 message received!

DamnCatOnMyDesk,

@governa @tauonite It never ceases to amaze me that all these wildly different Fediverse platforms can seamlessly communicate like this.

governa,
@governa@fosstodon.org avatar

@DamnCatOnMyDesk @tauonite it's wonderful isn't it? almost magical :ablobcatrainbow: :fediverse:
reminds me of Nokia's iconic tagline: "connecting people".

cloaker,

How do you (easily) browse KBin from Mastodon?

DamnCatOnMyDesk,

@cloaker @tauonite @governa Unfortunately it's not currently easy to do that on Mastodon since we're limited to hashtag and account name searches. The best we can do is follow communities which appear as group accounts on Mastodon.

noodlejetski,
@noodlejetski@masto.ai avatar

@DamnCatOnMyDesk does it work the same way following a Lemmy community works, though? because when you do that, you get every single comment made in that community boosted into your timeline. not optimal.
@cloaker @tauonite @governa

DamnCatOnMyDesk,

@noodlejetski @cloaker @tauonite @governa Like I said, currently the best we can do. Some work needs to be done to Mastodon to better handle representing threads vs timelines.

cloaker,

Seems the best way is to browse through KBin if you don't want to deal with clunky search but if you want notifications and the good UI you need mastodon. I guess we just let them grow 😀

Yeah I like it here. How's Lemmy? What, to you, makes Lemmy preferable to Kbin?

SnowboardBum,
SnowboardBum avatar

Can't collapse comments on kbin, either.

tal,
tal avatar

Lemmy makes its image previews proportional rather than squashing them into a square, as kbin presently does, for one.

Perry,
Perry avatar

What's funnier is that Kbin squashes them into a square and then seem to stretch that square into some strange almost 3:2 landscape format.

I tried to add some custom CSS with Tampermonkey to fix the thumbnails, and was extremely confused until I realised what was happening.

ReCursing,

Well that's a thing! I had noticed that but not thought much on it. i imagine Earnest has that on his todo list already, but there's a lot on there!

tal,
tal avatar

Heh. Last I looked there were 49 open PRs for him to review. I dunno if he's going to have a chance to actually code himself if he has to also be reviewing all the patches people are sending him.

I also saw something recently saying that he handed off the server admin work to someone.

EDIT: Apparently he's not the only one reviewing.

Yes, the pictures are incredibly annoying. This is a simple change and will be one of the first ones. Now that we've managed to relatively control the situation, I'm taking some time off. I'll be back at full speed starting from Monday morning :)

Thanks for all the work you put in Earnest! I'm new to kbin but I've been enjoying my time here and am looking forward to spending more.
Also, love the MP avi :D

Naminreb,

For anyone reading on mobile.

You can change that in the clog wheel tyat shows when you click on KBin on the top left. Make sure auto show the media is marked as yes, instead of the Thumbnail.

megsmagik,

I love this federation thing, it’s so cool!

adonis,
adonis avatar

I wish they'd merge identically named communities, or allow mods to select specific communities to merge into each other.

i.e. subscribing to /m/technology, they should automatically federate lammy.ml/c/technology ... or a mod of /m/askkbin can choose to federate /c/asklemmy, etc... that would be awesome

o_o,

I actually disagree! I think I like that there can be multiple communities. I expect (if this whole federated thing works out) that they'll naturally start to merge as people realize which one is better run/moderated.

What I would like is the ability to browse multiple communities at once, like how reddit lets you do https://reddit.com/r/technology+python, for example.

Not bad, thanks! Dog is sleeping on my lap, pinning down my scrolling and tapping hand with his little chin, but I’m managing. How’s stuff over in Lemmyville?

mrnotoriousman,

I'm enjoying it, but I wish kbin had a dark mode. As more users start coming over from reddit, etc. and producing content, it should get even better.

    I’m still stumbling around bumping into things. But someone kindly explained how to pin the site to my phone - it’s sitting next to Apollo, for now - and things are starting to feel better. I spent an embarrassingly long time looking for the back button before realising swype worked.

    MasterMediasRes,

    Can’t explain it, but signed up for both and kbin just feels…nice?

    This isn't my Kbin account, but I honestly prefer Kbin's interface. Lemmy's is shiny, but it also has a few problems that can be a little annoying when trying to use Lemmy on a computer.

    It also works on my older tablet without imploding like Lemmy's does, which is a nice bonus.

    tal, (edited )
    tal avatar

    I'm on kbin too, but my understanding is that the next Lemmy release is going to stop the auto refresh that keeps the interface moving while trying to use it, which I would guess is one of the "little annoying" UI issues and probably also produces some of the load.

    I mean, my guess is that the low-hanging fruit, the really in-your-face stuff that take a tweak or two, is gonna get hammered out pretty quickly on both software packages. Hell, if it doesn't, I'll throw some PRs in myself.

    It's things like scaling issues at the ActivityPub level or something like that that I'm more wondering about. Some of that may be harder, because as the Fediverse keeps growing, I suspect that scaling issues will show up.

    SeatBeeSate,

    It's good over here! Our news sorting actually works!

    LimeStone,

    Sorting on lemmy.world has been fixed since yesterday from what I can tell.

    oryx,
    @oryx@lemmy.world avatar

    Yup. It was really annoying for a few days this week, with sorting by new being my only option to see anything new. Active and hot were all two or three day old posts. Now active and hot work perfectly fine and it's so much better to browse again!

    The Beauty of Fediverse!

    masterspace,

    Do comments go across instances? I can see that posts can but I'm still not clear on whether comments sections for federated posts are separate or merged or what

    VulcanSphere,
    VulcanSphere avatar

    Comments are posted across instances, although sometimes it will be delayed in sync (especially when there is a lot of traffic).

    T156,

    Yes, they do. Although it can take a few minutes if the instances are busy.
