taco,

Blaming the federal government for the housing crisis makes about as much sense as blaming your local municipality for the military’s recruitment problems.

Am I making this simple enough yet?

@taco

The analogy makes sense when one comes at it from "blaming"

That said, in practical terms, the federal government probably has more levers available to it should it choose to use them with regards to the housing crisis, than the local municipality does to encourage the folks who live in that municipality to sign up to join the military.

@taco You are quite wrong. Housing is a shared responsibility between different levels of government. The federal government between the 1970's and the early 1990's helped fund 60,000 units of cooperative housing in Ontario (plus other parts of Canada).

Now is PP Boy going to restore this kind of funding? Of course not. But to say the federal government has no role to play in housing is completely and utterly wrong.

@taco I quite understand why many folks don't grasp the federal role in housing. It's been over 30 years since there was serious federal involvement in housing. But, I'm old enough to have been around for the protests and rallies against the federal housing program cuts in the 1980's and their total elimination in the early 1990's. This was part of the neo-liberal counter-reformation in Canada.

taco,

@leftylabourtech the cuts you’re referring to were payments to the provinces to subsidize housing development, reinforcing my point.

kneworldodor,

@taco @leftylabourtech not really. It's all about the $$ and that used to flow fed > prov >muni. Much like healthcare the point was to even things out across the federation so as to avoid have and have not provinces. Why join to be a poor cousin eh?

@kneworldodor @taco At least I live in a city where we finally have a mayor in Olivia Chow who is pledged to work on housing regardless of what the feds or the province do or don't do.

kneworldodor,

@leftylabourtech @taco pretty much what we all have to do. Look after ourselves as well as possible and if helps comes from outside it's a plus. Lots of people on the street that isn't working for though.

@kneworldodor @taco That heat has to be kept on them to act.
