We got a preview of 2024 #DnD backgrounds and there's a major change coming.
But all the focus from the presentation has been on new products and schedules rather than the further reduction of story in WotC backgrounds
@phd20@Alphastream@Tim_Eagon I like Floating as the primary way to distribute. Kobold's idea of just increasing the array and point buy to reflect that is also very good.
Level Up splitting one bonus from background and one floating is good. I'd prefer if Wizards went that route, probably.
@phd20@Alphastream@bedirthan Because ability score modifiers are now tied to background, you're going to constrain the number of background/class combos. That doesn't really matter in 2014 5e because mechanically, backgrounds are a collection of tool, skill, and language proficiencies that don't really interact directly with your class. For example, the Artisan providing +2 to Intelligence and +1 to Charisma means you'll probably see way fewer fighters with the artisan background.
@phd20@Alphastream@bedirthan Second, I don't like how acquiring languages are handled. Using the Artisan example again, you learn Gnomish because so much crafting jargon originates from that language. That's analogous to scientists today being fluent in Latin and Greek because so much scientific terminology originates with those languages. It's just dumb. And if the point of all this is to eliminate racial monocultures, why are we reinforcing racial monocultures through backgrounds?
@phd20@Alphastream@bedirthan The reason why 2014 PHB backgrounds were so great is because they expanded characters instead of constraining them. The 2024 approach is a total step backwards.
@Tim_Eagon@phd20@Alphastream@bedirthan Most changes I'm don't get really worked about even if I don't like them. But languages for backgrounds just REALLY grated me, especially when I saw (at least in the UA) that gladiators get orcish. The WotC design team really don't understand the problems with monocultures, orcs/racism, etc. and it's only been fan complaints and the hard work of consultants & freelancers that have lead to any progress.
They truly do not understand the problem. At. All.
