Let's make a communal 5e character.

We'll start with a piece of mundane equipment -- a signet ring.

What type of person starts their adventuring life with a signet ring from an important house?

Our communal 5e rogue stole a signet ring.

Why?

Why did the thieves guild give our rogue such a difficult first task to stealing a signet ring?

@bedirthan@dice.camp avatar

Our nobleborn rogue stole a signet ring from their own family.

What type of city did they grow up in?

Our nobleborn rogue stole a signet ring from their own family in the City of a Thousand Canals.

Was their family ...

This question leans a bit into my homebrew world combined with recent ideas inspired through lore conversations here on the Fedi

Halflings in my world almost always have a dog companion. What type of dog does our nobleborn rogue in the canal city of Daoud who stole from their own family have?

@mithriltabby @bedirthan I voted terrier last night, but I want to change my vote now.

@bedirthan Terrier gives you a lot to work with!

@bedirthan dachshund

@bedirthan e) corgi

😆

bedirthan,
@bedirthan@dice.camp avatar

@karlnelson I'd lump them in with the terriers, as they serve a similar 'working' function

Our nobleborn rogue in the canal city of Daoud with a terrier companion stole from their own family.
How did they do that?

Tim_Eagon,
@Tim_Eagon@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan C'mon people, the mental image of a 3-foot tall person stealing a dog with sleight of hand is awesome! It can't come in last!

bedirthan,
@bedirthan@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon oh, god. I forgot the signet ring bit!

Ooooops

bedirthan,
@bedirthan@dice.camp avatar

All I need now are some quirks for a Rogue that gets by on smarts and panache. They're a nobleborn halfling with a terrier companion in a city of a thousand canals.

Reply with a quirk or twist and I'll pick my favorite two

@bedirthan They left their life of luxury behind in the first place because they're strongly asexual, and like most noble houses theirs leans heavily on forced reproductive marriages to perpetuate itself.

Tim_Eagon,
@Tim_Eagon@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan We apparently like crime.

bedirthan,
@bedirthan@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon well, yes.

I wouldn't be surprised if this journey involves burning things too

Tim_Eagon,
@Tim_Eagon@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan D&D players and arson, a match made in heaven.

Beavis looking at a fire and saying "Lets Burn It!"

@bedirthan

  • Nobleborn that stole it from a rival
  • rogue that is protecting it from a worse rogue who would use it for evil
  • paladin who is using it to send protected messages back to the Noble House
  • bard who won it at a card game

@bedirthan I went with noble born. My favorite approach is to look over a setting, pick out two things I find interesting about it, then create a character strongly connected to one but influenced by the other. So I'm trying to help reaffirm the setting first, then adding an interesting complication.

Since this is the first step, I'll start by affirming the expected: the character has the signet ring because they are of that house.

@foolishowl that's a great way to make characters.

My tradition with this communal characters is to take non-poll feedback and have at least one option in the next round really lean into that.
