Now free for all to read... I've recently become more aware of accessibility while travelling. Then, after facing too many steps in Europe's Metros, I had a revelation:

@timrichards it is due to almost falling down an escalator when I was a child.

@timrichards There is at least one subway station in Brooklyn (Clark Street) where you get on the elevator and it takes you down to a flight of stairs. Also, there are no guarantees that escalators or lifts will be in working condition. It's a difficult system to navigate at times.

@lydialurch I have found in the US that there there are a lot of broken escalators and elevators in stations at any given time. Not enough money in the maintenance budgets I guess.
