I was logged out while writing a comment (this one if it matters). When I tried to submit the comment the text entry box just stays there instead of converting to "static" (?) html text.
I reloaded in another tab and found I was logged out. So I logged in for that tab and tried to submit in the original tab, which had no different result. I copied my comment to clipboard, then refreshed the tab in which I was writing the comment, so now I am logged in. Then I can make my comment.
Anyway no response is required to this, hope you have a cup of tea. Great project. :)
Hello! Your link says "The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance." And I cannot see any posts.
I've noticed this with the majority of communities I searched for outside of Kbin.
Do you know why this happens?
If I click that message, I get redirected to that respective community, example https://lemmy.world/c/pennsylvania.
Then I can see the posts, however I can't interact with them, since I would need to create and login on that respective instance, eg lemmy.world
Any idea why I can't see the posts from magazines outside Kbin?
AFAIK it happens because old posts are usually updated only when they are searched (I guess to avoid importing too much stuff) and last time I tried you just needed to search the lemmy address but I tried again and right now it doesn't seem to work.
Sometimes it takes time to sync, so maybe they'll show up in a while but if they don't it could be a bug/federation issue.
My default homepage is subs, and I don't have nine pages of content on it yet, but I did get multiple 404 errors while going through it. I have auto media preview enabled and it looks like the next page doesn't work until all of the images have loaded on the current page, for some reason. Had no problems with auto media preview turned off.
I couldn't replicate the issue with my homepage switched back to all because I couldn't get to the end of the page and click the next button before all the images had loaded (the next page kept disappearing out from under my mouse just as I clicked it, lol), but page 9 by itself seemed to work fine.
You make a good point. Lemmy.world is consistently part of my feed. The 404 errors haven't happened today, but thinking about it now, the constant issues the domain had with loading happened at the same time as the 404s.
Don't have a direct link to a guide, but:
Badges - Ignore for the moment, iirc they are being worked on but don't do much atm.
Boosts - Think a retweet on Twitter. Kbin has connectivity with Mastodon (the Microblog section you see at the top of every magazine). Also works on threads as kind of a super-upvote.
So my workflow to find and subscribe to magazines on other instances is browse the other instance sites and find a magazine I like, but then since I'm not logged in there, load it in kbin by typing the url https://kbin.social/m/MAGAZINENAME@lemmy.world and click subscribe? I don't mind if that's the case but I figured there might be an easier way to browse the federated instances.
In terms of subbing: What you describe we'll call method 1. For 2 you can plug "MAGAZINENAME@lemmy.world" into the search on https://kbin.social/magazines which'll bring up a subscription button (though same amount of effort lol), and lastly from the URL I gave you for lemmyverse, if you click the house icon in the top right, you can flip the switch to kbin and type in kbin.social into it for your home instance and any magazine/community you come across on that site will have a url correctly formatted to kbin.social so you can click on it (and then click subscribe, as before lol).
In terms of straight up finding magazines and instances in the first place, that website will probably be your best bet if you wanna find specific things (like should you wanna look for every gaming related community for example) outside of the aforementioned magazine search page here on kbin, couldn't tell you if one is more accurate or not however lol.
In terms of actually browsing the instances, viewing their content, etc - Same as Reddit. Visit said url (like kbin.social/m/gaming for our gaming community, kbin.social/m/gaming@lemmy.world for lemmy.world's gaming community, etc). If you're on one of our magazines, the end, you're good. If you're on one of theirs (that you're viewing while logged in here on kbin.social), you should see everything that occurs, and communicate with people, nearly instantaneously when everything is working perfect, but if something breaks, or federation is slow, you could have some messages/threads/etc not cross over right away, but that's not happening as often as it was a month or so ago.
A list of blocked magazines / people / domains can be found under settings, which appears as a drop down under your username, here: https://kbin.social/settings/blocked/magazines (this is the link to blocked magazines but there are links above the list to see blocked people and domains)
Edit: Oh and as far as I know, at the moment you can not use wildcards
Thanks. I appear to be blocking what Kbin calls magazines. So far I've blocked 30 meme magazines, 8 of which were called "memes" (albeit on different domains). Not quite sure what I'm achieving as more appear each day.
What I don't fully understand is the page/tab where I'm blocking things is titled "Threads", and I never use the Magazines tab.
Guess I have to unlearn some reddit mental baggage.
If you haven't wrapped your head around it yet: magazines are equivalent to subreddits. The "magazines" tab is just a place to search for new subreddits. The "threads" tab is where posts in those subreddits will actually show up — if you're on the homepage, you'll see posts from a variety of magazines just like the homepage on reddit shows you posts from a variety of subreddits. You can then block posts from certain subreddits from showing up on that homepage.
I've changed my homepage to the subscriptions page because I'm just not interested in most of what's on the default homepage. No more memes (or news, or stuff about lemmy). :)
Yeah, it even works across software like me seeing this on lemmy. The trickiest part is if you are the first person to interact with a given magazine. You have to ”establish” the federation. Best way I can recommend is pasting the direct link into both the general kbin search and the magazine search a few times then you just have to wait a bit.
Does it seem similar to what's reported here? https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/221681 It seems similar to your comment so it does seem like people are experiencing it. I guess I'd be curious if it would work like a day later if you save one of the urls to try, just to see if it's an intermittent issue or a permanent one
