Someone convince me to read this. Everything I have seen up to now makes hydrogen pretty much a non starter because it has to many issues in storage, transport, and usage. Fuel cells seem better off with methanol.

Death_Equity,

My big concern is that water electrolysis will be the easiest source.

They can store and transport water easily, pulling the hydrogen at the fueling stations. This would increase energy demand considerably.

Turning the most vital resource on this planet into a fuel would have repercussions.

Hydrogen turns back into water when used. It's not a concern. At best, a minor local concern if you don't have water in the area.

I have never heard of folks talking about electrolysis. I don't know if efficiency has improved but last I knew you lose a fair amount and more so if the setup is not real good (so doing it at location should not work as well as a factory designed to do it).

Methanol would be made from hydrogen plus CO₂. So it wouldn't be any different in terms of where you're getting the energy from.

Well yeah but straight up hydrogen again has issues with storage, transport, and its usage that methanol does not. that is why it might be better than pure hydrogen.

It ultimately just ends up being a question of straight hydrogen versus hydrogen + carbon carrier. It really depends on which version ends up being cheaper.
