hankg,

More enshitification. DropBox adds to the OpenAI data vacuum all your files unless you opt out. Having the pipe is one thing. Having it be opt out and not even telling users about it makes me furious.
Dropbox spooks users by sending data to OpenAI for AI search features

This is a good short story happening at this very moment: a lonely guy in Seattle is playing with ChatGPT, and suddenly the intimate details of a messy divorce in NY begin to appear as the results of his prompts. Over the following months, he stalks the divorcee asking the chatbot for more specific details. @hankg @annaleen

@hankg I am so tired of this AI shit. It is consuming everything.
i thought that only ppl i allow get my data from dropBox, not OpenAi of all places.

Next when you buy a phone you have to opt out to share you private pictures that are stored on your device

tanquist,

@hankg
either completely deleted the option, or maybe added it to "Early access - Get access to products and features that Dropbox is still testing and evaluating..." I turned the option off as soon as I found out about it, but now it is no longer there. I'm going to see if I can transfer everything to .

jantheowassink,

@hankg Drop Box y'all

@phranck @hankg I can't even find where the Setting should be that I have to turn off now.

hankg,

@phranck @svenja I can't find it any more either. IIRC under "Settings" the last tab was "AI" or something (right after "Sharing"). The toggle switch was in there.

svenja,
@svenja@fedisabled.social avatar

@hankg there is no AI Tab on my end. @phranck

@svenja @hankg @phranck As far as I understand, this "ai-function" of Dropbox is not available within the EU & UK. Presumably because it conflicts with the GDPR.

@StefanKarstens that would explain it. @hankg @phranck

ShibaBotJason,

@hankg If anyone is looking for an alternative, Nextcloud is a good option. I found a web provider that will let you register your own domain and has scripts to auto install Nextcloud. I think it costs me less than $40/yr.

Cloudamo.com

hankg,

@ShibaBotJason I’ll check it out. Thanks! pCloud was what I had the most affinity for after some initial research. Many of the options don’t have Linux clients which is a dealbreaker for me.

ShibaBotJason,

@hankg I run the Nextcloud app on my Linux Mint desktop and also on a MacBook and android phone. It has issues sometimes but works well mostly.

bluegreenandfree,

@hankg News of this convinced me to give up Dropbox for good. I hadn't even heard of the opt-out shenanigans yet.

hankg,

@bluegreenandfree Yeah under settings you can turn it off. I would be okay with it if it was opt-in not opt-out. I have no desire to send any of my data to OpenAI.
