anyone have any book recommendations for a parent of an adult diagnosed autistic child?

everything i’m seeing so far is for parents of little kids. @actuallyautistic

tanquist,

I bought "Social Thinking At Work: Why Should I Care?" by Michelle Garcia Winner & Pamela Crooke at an autism conference about 10 years ago. I didn't finish it, but what I did read showed me the value in choosing to connect with co-workers. My tendency was to head straight to my desk and get to work. I found that simply greeting people in the morning and saying "Hi" to coworkers as we pass in the hallway has increased my comfort level and theirs.

In "The Autistic Brain," describes her theories about the different ways we process information. She concludes with advice on how we can find success in life by focusing on our strengths.

Back in 2006 I took this photo of a cargo bike in Mexico. I wish I hadn't cut off the rear of the fender. This is well-loved. I think it's single speed with coaster brakes.

Here's a different kind of cargo in Nicollet, Minnesota, April 1966. That's me in the front child seat.

Remember my "otherwise intelligent" friend had been trapped in conspiracy bubbles. It has gotten worse, recently he shared a Jimmy Dore COVID video (easily debunked by finding the report it was based on) and he begged me to sit through a 2 hour Jordan Peterson interview with Richard Lindzen rather than allow me to just base an argument on Lindzen's hypothesis.

Today I kindly asked to be freed from this torment of miseducation from YouTube, which resulted in this summary I wanted to share...

tanquist,

@selzero
My relative used to demand I watch videos certain to change my mind about , , and certain and . I've watched him "do his own research" which obviously consists of online rabbit holes curated for the gullible to fall into. Now I answer his demands with, "Send me a report and I'll read it." He never has. He still occasionally asks, "Aren't you outraged that [insert conspiracy theory here]" to which I reply, "If true, that would be terrible."

Trying to appear normal at social events requires nearly all of my attention and I have no idea what anyone is saying so I no longer attempt it. I occasionally manage to carry on a conversation with someone. When that fails, I...

back in the day, we used to say "regular expressions are unreadable" and make "now you have two problems" jokes about Perl.

now, of course, we've fixed that problem: we use billion-parameter neural nets to parse and reformat JSON

    WOW.

"The average repair bill for a traditional vehicle today runs $4,437.
For an electric vehicle, the average fix is 49% higher, or $6,618."

The cost to repair is high because of all the tech gadgets in today's models like parking assist and cameras; plus EV powertrains need processors.

And there's the built-in distraction, e.g. the dashboard is now a screen that requires you to look to operate anything. Invitation to a crash. (I like buttons, thanks).

Interesting piece, "Does Web Design Matter?" https://danmall.com/posts/does-web-design-matter

I think what it REALLY asks is "do flashy, NEEDLESS aspects of websites need to be there?" My answer has always been an emphatic NO (unless you just want them to be, for artistic purposes?)

Sure, it can look nice, or cool. But personally, when I go to a website (there are exceptions, YouTube etc) all I (generally) want is INFORMATION. Quickly. Without video or animated crap loading. I know this is NOT the state of the modern web.

    tanquist,

I make sure my phone is connected to wifi before I go on the web. Otherwise the videos that automatically run up burn up all of my data.
