Phoenix Arizona

It's a long shot, I know, but does anyone in the Phoenix area have a dentist with HEPA filters in the office? I'm having some issues and can't put off an appointment.

When many people think of , they think of endless suburban sprawl. And, certainly, that’s part of the story. But here’s something that many are surprised to learn:

Four of the five largest city parks are located in metro Phoenix

@rscottjones Maybe Skyline could annex another 600 acres and knock Texas off the radar?

@LoneLocust Thanks! It’s crazy how poorly of a job these agencies do in maintaining their links.

So, Weee! (https://www.sayweee.com/en) is an Asian grocery delivery service. (Probably not very carbon-friendly.) They deliver a lot of goods difficult, if not impossible to find in , but they also (apparently) listen.

I ordered Chashu from them a while back but, being frozen, large, and uncut it was problematic if you’re just making a single bowl of ramen.

I left a review of the chashu and pointed out how inconvenient the packaging was and, now, they’re selling it in smaller, pre-sliced packaging. Full marks.

Mom
At least someone's Mom. On Mothers' Day 2024 I found gardens of sculptures and decorations filling 3 home lots in central Phoenix, AZ. Earlier I shared an iPhone shot of a side yard and this is one of the sculptures I was able to see inside the side yard. By Don Russell, an extraordinary Outsider Artist who doesn't sell his work. He just buys more homes there to be able to work on them and store them while his renters enjoy the atmosphere.

Found object sculpture of a woman made from wire, metal, tools, washers, emblems, and decorative metal pieces, detail view of sculpture about 9 feet tall. She looks like she has wild long hair and an ornate gown of wire patterns with dark brown skin showing. Her eyes look startled, round and wide.

Truly a nice Mothers’ Day going for me since my youngest worked overnight till late enough I could go out with my cameras at 5:30 am. I enjoy driving around areas of Phoenix unknown to me and planning on finding subject matter that is a joy to see. Hit jackpot around 7 am in a seedy old neighborhood near old downtown. 3 homes with sculpture and outsider area that was terrific! Here’s a cellphone shot of one, so you can imagine my thrill when a renter let me in the side yard.

Nasty little secret about : They claim to have 700-800 miles of bike paths, and while I don’t doubt the number, I do doubt the value of them.

There are many, many demarcated bike lanes that go a couple blocks and then end.

I’ve started a little project to write up and highlight a number of the useful bike paths — the ones that can get you some distance reasonably easily.

Today’s ride (as was yesterday’s) was Maryland Ave.

@LoneLocust I rented a bike while in Phoenix for a business trip about 10 years ago. Google sent me on "bike paths" that were dirt roads along aquaduct, with 6" deep tire ruts in them.

Then, biking after dark from dinner to hotel, the path along the aquaduct was blocked by a small crowd of people and a burning sofa.

I grew up on the Saint Cloud State campus (RIP Campus Lab School), so burning furniture is totally normal :) . But I turned around and rode the other way.

@NewNordicNormal The canals are very popular bike paths across Phoenix, and in the last few years, they’ve put a lot of effort into improving them. Most are paved now.

Weird thing though, because of right-of-access, the cities control one side of the canals and the Salt River Project controls the other.

It means in most places, only one bank is paved, and it sometimes switches between one side and the other.

Last summer in Phoenix I was just sure the record-breaking heat wave killed off the many decades’ old rose bushes out front of my home. Despite my aggressive pruning and spray treatment for a fungicide for thrips, Voilá they are doing fine! Never saw 6 full blooms at once in a giant cluster.

Another bike-riding metric: nails/km

Very short 14km ride this morning for breakfast and back home.

I collected 4 nails (by hand, not by tire) along the route. That’s 1 nail per 3.5 km. That’s excessive even by standards.

They were all along 23rd Ave.

renedario,
@renedario@fosstodon.org avatar

@LoneLocust why are there so many nails on Phoenix roads?

LoneLocust,
@LoneLocust@mastodon.social avatar

@renedario That’s a damned good question!

I can't honestly say Phoenix is any worse than other cities. I don't have much riding experience outside of Phoenix and Tucson (and Tucson was back in the 80s.)

There’s a lot of construction, and contractors (especially roofing contractors) aren't particularly careful about their nail inventory or handling. That could be part of it.

It might be the way the street design pushes all the junk to the sides and it becomes more obvious on a bike.

People complain about the unpleasant weather where they live.

I get it. Snow and ice suck.

But few will know the pain of it being 34°C (92°F) with bright blue skies outside but the pool temp remains right around that of liquid nitrogen.

🥵☀️ 🥶🏊‍♀️ 🤷🌵

No photo today but picture this: on patio with my legs up, enjoying a great hamburger with a brewski, looking out across the pool which is now ready to go whenever it is hot enough. Ahhhh! It’s 85° now almost 7:30 pm. Got my shorts and sandals ready to go and it’s so pleasant right now.

Remember I said all this when I start to complain mightily in another month when the next heat wave comes. The weather right now is just perfect. 😍

Just back from a 47.2km bike ride with @donburnside. Quite an adventure that included looking for (and finding) my lost phone that bounced out of it's holder when we were way off course and river-rock hopping.

It may also have included a couple of beer stops. Gotta stay hydrated!
