🏥 Welp, I’ll be at the hospital all night with my dad, who is having difficulty breathing and battling some sort of infection.

@LoneLocust@mastodon.social avatar

Nasty little secret about #Phoenix: They claim to have 700-800 miles of bike paths, and while I don’t doubt the number, I do doubt the value of them.

There are many, many demarcated bike lanes that go a couple blocks and then end.

I’ve started a little project to write up and highlight a number of the useful bike paths — the ones that can get you some distance reasonably easily.

Today’s ride (as was yesterday’s) was Maryland Ave.

@LoneLocust Yeah, I’m not sure how often they update it. I know they’ve added a few down here in Ahwatukee in the last couple years that are on it.

Really wish they would have just made all these sidewalks about 3x wider and made them all multi-purpose paths. It’s not like we need the landscaping edges anyway, and it could better accommmodate human-power and normal vehicle speeds. I wish the city would require that of new housing developments.

@vees @LoneLocust Oooh, good to know. Most of my rides are rather short, so I’ve never gotten the battery under 25%.

Which major change would a time traveler from 1974 notice most about cities today?

rscottjones,
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

@evan Interesting! This was definitely not my experience, but I’ve mostly lived in US suburbs.

But smoking? Oh man, it was EVERYWHERE. Same with cigarette butts. Now? Little pockets of them found mostly around isolated smoking sections. And you don’t have to change your clothes after going to a restaurant, or bar, or bowling alley, or…well, you get the idea.

Somehow only just found out you can target specific folders in using CSS snippets and add custom icons... heeeck yeah!

I know there's a plugin that can do this - but it caused issues with Obsidian sync because it stores SVG files in your vault. This snippet on the other hand is just using emojis.

CSS snippet that makes this happen: /* Folder icons via holroy (https://forum.obsidian.md/u/holroy/summary)

Understanding AP and RSS

I've been trying to figure out what ActivityPub does that RSS doesn't.

Off the top of my head, it's not the ability to syndicate, RSS already does that. I can follow anyone on any server.

I think it's the timeline? And the ability to delete posts. Keeping all that in sync is a lot of work, and presumably a lot of traffic?

Also replies. If I reply to a post when viewing it on another server, the reply should show up under any other view of that post.

What else??

rscottjones,
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

@davew RSS = announcement of distribution
AP = invitation for conversation

rscottjones,
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

@davew I mean, I think there are much better community tools out there, and imo the best communities are small, human-scale ones based on a shared topic.

In Jan, I moved my travel club from a closed Mighty Network to its own Mastodon server so we could interact beyond our 100-member group. But to my surprise, only ~25 have made the shift over. That’s interesting 🤔

Microblogging took off because it was easier than blogging, and allowed centralized convos in a way that web comments couldn’t.

rscottjones,
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

@kev How do you choose what to include in your blogroll?

I’m adding one back into my site, but the web’s a bit different these days than when I last had one. Back then, every website I read was updated frequently, but that’s definitely not the case anymore—especially for my friends’ personal sites. And many of the blogs I used to read are now newsletters, not personal sites.

Any thoughts on this?

(btw, I’m adding your site to my “fun web designs” blogroll section)

fromjason, to threads
@fromjason@mastodon.social avatar

The reason why and are incompatible is that Mastodon is a community, and Threads is a market. That's it.

It's not big Fed vs small Fedi. It's not platforms vs protocols.

It's communities vs markets.

Communities are supportive and markets are extractive. Communities answer to those who must live with decisions made. Markets answer to money.

And wouldn't you know it, those contrasting forces influence people's behaviors, goals, and motivations for engaging with others.

rscottjones,
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

@fromjason Isn’t Mastodon on the same path towards being a market, just sans algorithm? Sure, it’s not an ad platform (yet?), but I’m not seeing much actual community-building here and virtually everyone is on one large server (too big/diverse to be much of a “community”). It’s not positioned as being for “communities,” but instead is a way to avoid the rent-seeking platforms.

When/if it reaches critical mass, won’t the same brands/companies follow + it’ll be just another distribution channel?

davew, to random
@davew@mastodon.social avatar

Back in the 80s before most of you were born, you could buy a word processing program, which was basically a text editor, and you could use it to write and then when it came time to send that writing to other people, you would print it. And get this the printer could take its input from any of those writing tools. There were no tiny little text boxes. The printers didn’t come with their own editors, you had choice and therefore there was lots of competition. Amazing, right?

rscottjones,
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

@davew That’s just a personal blog + rss/email.

There’s no reason we should have to publish the same damn thing on countless systems.

The only benefit big social platforms offer is helping to consolidate discovery onto one server, plus possibility of virality.

But couldn’t we just have an opt-in rss aggregator that provides good search of rss items, allows you to follow topical posts, and assists with interoperability for commenting and resharing? I’m not a developer, but that seems doable 🤷‍♂️
