The first six cookie cutters are printed. Many more to come :) Now to get some ingredients and food Color to actually make and bake the cookies :)

@jwildeboer nice! can i download the stl somewhere?

I did a bit of rotating, shuffling and moving around and I now have 7 cookie cutters on one 165x165mm print plate :) I guess that's close to the maximum I can squeeze on it.

I guessed wrong :) Now with 8! Finally I can sleep :)

And after a good night of sleep, I placed 9. This is the max I can do :) Now to throw it on the printer! (I had to reduce the skirt distance from 3 to 2 mm to get this working :)

I am sure there is a mathematical solution for optimal placement of irregular shapes somewhere out there, but I had fun while finding this manual solution :)

From a 3d printing lecture one year ago: there is still significant research being done. Metal printing and 3d placement tho.

And holy shit have fdm printing in hobbyist hands accelerated a lot of stuff. We need the expensive machines to fuck around and break nda land.

Yeah but SLS machines are a lot of secret kept magic settings.

It is just insane, how much is guesswork as of now (aka operator experience)

@jwildeboer As far as I know still "just" approximate solutions, as exact solutions are too compute intensive. My old friends at Scapos AG, an offspring of Fraunhofer SCAI (former GMD SCAI) sell auto nesting software: https://www.scapos.de/en/

    Lalufu,

@eigengott @jwildeboer "Too compute extensive" sounds somewhat weird given the amount of FLOPS even a low end GPU will do, but I uave absolutely no insight into the process

@Lalufu @jwildeboer No amount of FLOPS will help you if your problem is NP complete.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knapsack_problem

    Lalufu,

@eigengott @jwildeboer That's debatable? In the general case sure, but for specific cases with a small enough n and enough compute this can be absolutely feasible.

@jwildeboer if you posted this to reddit the first thing they'd ask you was whether it was printed with a food-safe filament (which most aren't)

@rfc2549 @jwildeboer Ok I was totally about to ask that 🤦. But only because I love printing cookie cutters and am on the lookout for food safe filaments - not as a criticism! (My current cookie cutters are food safe-ish).

@jwildeboer @rfc2549 Yes, it’s not a simple issue. For home cooking though, I have not worried too much about it.
