User (to me: maintainer): why don't you just do this incredibly obvious thing that you would have obviously done already if it was possible because it's so fucking obvious.

Me (externally): because... rtfm link.

Me (internally): oh, just fuck off.

German speakers: how old is the Barbaras Rhabarberbar tongue twister? Is it something like She Sells Seashells, or How Much Wood Would a Woodchuck Chuck, that almost every child would know.

I was introduced to the version done by, presumably, a couple of comedians recently, and it's quite wonderful.

I'm not (at least not yet) persuaded by the argument that the output of an LLM is a derivative of all the material it was trained on. The problem with the argument is that it also applies to me: if I see some cool code you wrote, you bet I'm going to make a mental note of it. The trip hazards here are patents and non-free licenses, but they also apply equally to people.

There are other problems with LLMs, but I'm not convinced by that one specifically.

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@mariusor Exactly! There are patents and licenses to prevent people from using other people's code, which requires measures like clean room if you want to implement the same functionality. Others which are designed to facilitate it. I don't see what makes LLMs unique in this.

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@mariusor My point is that same argument would apply to me. I have also seen all the code, and I copy the things I learned from it.

40 years ago, I got my first home Desktop computer.

An IBM AT.

I still have it in the garage.

Time to pull it out and video record a demo for the "kids" and play some Flight Simulator, maybe make a "Newspaper" with the newspaper publishing software, etc.

I wonder what LOTUS 123 will do?

LOL

mattb,

@paul Wow, IBM had stores! I did not know that.

A few years ago I confirmed experimentally that the theorised condition known as "too much cheese" exists in practise. The apparatus primarily consisted of fondue.

However, a few years on these results still feel improbable. I wonder if I should try to replicate them again.

I finally gathered the courage to write a mail to my landlord about installing some flexible solar panels to my (south facing) balcony.

If he says yes (no idea how big my chances for this are) I'll also have to clear it with the house owner assembly, and it is really unclear whether I'll get an ok from there and if so how long it'll take.

All of this so far made me not want to even start this fight, as stuff like this costs me a TON of energy, but on the other hand it's a shame not to try.

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@foosel It sounds like this would be controversial for some reason? Why would that be?

I've got 24 hours in Paris in July with my 14 year old son. We've done the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, Sacre-Coeur, and the Arc de Triomphe before. We didn't do the Louvre last time, so we'll book tickets to take selfies with the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo (total expected visit time <1hr if we drag it out or the queues are bad).

What would you do?

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@xahteiwi Ooh. That could be hard to beat.

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@xahteiwi I was going to say that given his eating habits it's not worth asking for a restaurant suggestion unless it's le McDonalds or le bangers and mash.

However, a good creperie could be an excellent call πŸ‘Œ Filed.

What is the function giving the probability of having a number of odd socks N in a sock population of size P?

And if, as I suspect, I'm way at the improbable end, is this evidence I'm in the Matrix?

One of the few good things to happen during the pandemic: they opened our town's main shopping street to humans, and it was wonderful.

Then they closed it again, of course.

@creepy_owlet Most recently for me: because we gave it to real people instead of CI and they tested different things.

I've sent a little time this morning searching for articles around "patterns for service to service authentication" and found a couple of bits.

I'm trying to document/evangelise that evolution of patterns is OK (in fact preferable) to long cycle large shifts.
Anyone got any go to posts about intraService authN/authZ patterns ? I hate to say . ps

Reading Pride and Prejudice (1813) is fascinating. English changed a lot.

I didn't know "call" used to mean "to visit", for example.

But the thing that really surprised me was when someone described a person as "condescending" and clearly meaning it as a positive thing.

At first, I thought it also had a different meaning (like "gay" being "happy"), but nah.

Lady Catherine is condescending AF and Mr Collins is just a fucking idiot.

But like, Lizzy will end up with Darcy right? (no spoilers)

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@shadower Call still means visit, btw, if the usage is "to call on somebody".

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@shadower I used to call on my friends as a kid, so not archaic thank you very much πŸ˜†

I haven't heard it used without 'on' though, except referring to a phone call as you say.
