Multiple reddit alternatives

Does anyone else have multiple accounts while looking for new reddit alts? So far I've got accounts on Lemmy, kbin, and Squabbles and I've been lurking on Raddle, Sqwok, and Tildes from the outside.

Also, man, that sentence is just the most 2023 statement ever. "Raddle" ... "Sqwok" ... "Lemmy" ... None of these sound like real things. What even is this timeline we're in...

I liked the simplicity of old.reddit. So far, kbin seems to be the nearest and I'm going to give this site a go. I have to admit, the fediverse is too complex for me to understand properly and I worry that is going to be a problem for mass adoption. I understand the basics, but I don't understand the relationship between different apps. If Mastodon is a Twitter replacement, how can I view and post to Lemmy threads, for instance? And how do I view Mastodon threads from here? Why would I even want to? It's all too baffling.

mykl,

Haha, yes there is a problem with a bunch of geeks excitedly telling new users about geeky stuff like that interoperability stuff that will genuinely not do anything for most of them today.

“Lemmy/kbin is a replacement for Reddit and it doesn’t matter which you choose right now!” is all newbies need to be told.

Sure the other features mean that some incredible functionality will be built in the future that we didn’t even know we wanted, but most people are only concerned about getting off Reddit right now.

Keeping an eye out for the next best thing to move onto. I've got no confidence that Reddit will actively improve the API situation so it's probably time to flee, I'm not keen on being forced to used a subpar app just because they want to nuke the competition

I already had accounts on Tildes and Mastodon for years even though I barely visited. Since the beginning of June I made new accounts on dice.camp, beehaw.org (both Lemmy), Kbin, and Squabbles.io

Currently I check them all pretty much equally to get away from my Reddit comfort zone, but that isn't sustainable at all with my limited time and energy.

Tildes and Kbin are my favorites. Squabbles is interesting and dynamic but I fear the dev is overextending himself in his enthusiasm.

Basically I would like the about a dozen of Subreddits I have an interest in to move somewhere and for the rest to GTFO :D

Bostondrivingisworse,

I'd love to try Tildes, but it's invite only right now.

aha20395,

It's kbin for me, I've tried the others, with time and some small quality of life improvements it will surpass reddit. It's already 90% there, unlike the others though I want the massive user base of reddit and that only comes with time, I think kbin will replace it and I'll put my money where my mouth is donating to it.

HeavyForestMicrobes,

So far I just have an account here. I’ll let the masses do the work, I’m sure there will be enough threads about what ones suck and what alternatives are good. I just wanna scroll memes to scramble my brain 🤷‍♂️

It's a brave new world...!

But yes, 100%. Most of these names make no sense to me. At least Kbin sounds vaguely oldschool and techie...

@windchime I think I'm going to start pronouncing kbin as cabin.

I’ve been looking around but this site has grabbed my attention the most. Every time I find a new setting to change I like it a little bit more. Some other alternatives look interesting but seem strange to me or were (I’m assuming) receiving so much traffic that I couldn’t do much. If there’s others similar to kbin or with a good user base / admins then I’m sure in time I’ll be there.

I've got accounts here and Fedia for kbin, and one on Beehaw for Lemmy. I'm a bit torn on what to keep as my "main", as while Beehaw seems lovely, I'd rather use kbin than Lemmy. I guess I can use Beehaw's communities either way though, and it doesn't hurt to have accounts on both.

I'm on here, Lemmy, Squabbles, and Fark. Fark doesn't seem to be getting much traction though.

Fark predates Reddit by 8 years, so reading it "not getting much traction" is a strange thing to me. It kinda died off over the years as people moved on from its paid Totalfark service. I'm not sure if it ever rebounded much at all, but it's not a newbie by any stretch of the imagination. Nice to hear it mentioned again, though.

I just joined this site less than 30 minutes ago.

My main reddit account was suspended a few months ago—possibly due to Russian nationalists reporting on a (I think) innocuous comment I made.

Here's a list I made a while ago of (I think) all of my reddit accounts. Note that it's a bit dated (and warning, the page has a picture of nekkid lady in it, so don't go there if you are easily offended).

For music, I some times go to MusicBanter:

https://www.musicbanter.com/introductions/93218-i-found-out-about-you-less-than-90-minutes-ago.html

I also started another Miraheze wiki:

For debates, there is Wikiversity:

https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikidebate

I used to be on RationalWiki (under another name) and I might go back to it as well.

https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/RationalWiki:Saloon_bar

Aside from MusicBanter, none of these are ad-driven.

I look forward to good times here, though. :)

Holgast,

I signed up to Squabbles. Mastodon is too complicated for me right now, but I think kbin as a base for the fediverse is a good start.

moneygrowsontrees,

I've settled on kbin for the moment, although I'm still "shopping around" so to speak and getting used to the Fediverse. It feels a bit like when I first joined Reddit coming from Digg and I had to adjust to a new structure.

ChoccyMilk,

I did squabbles, Mastodon, Fedia and Kbin. I think I've settled in for Kbin though as I can access the content on the whole fediverse all from a somewhat familiar interface.

I'm not sure I trust the squabbles developer keeping everything all closed source.

LollerCorleone,

FYI, fedia.io is just an instance of Kbin and not a seperate fediverse platform.

ChoccyMilk,

Still created an account on both however 😅.

It has been a learning process, the fediverse is difficult to penetrate at first.

unrelated, thoughts on skim chocolate milk, low fat chocolate milk, and whole milk chocolate milk?

Any choccy milk is good choccy milk!

Though full fat is full flavour imo ;)
