Let's GOOOOOOOOOOOO

ludicrous print settings, 0.12 layer height, bizarre angle and Silk WHite to try to create the vertical lines effect visible in the live-action appearance of Mariner and Boimler in SNW.

rmd1023,

@moira Oh my god they show up on SNW!!!?? (C is set on watching things in release/air date order and we’re partway through LD S1 now.)

annathepiper,
@annathepiper@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@rmd1023 @moira It was hands down the best SNW episode this season. :D They actually came up with a way to make crossing over between those two shows work!

18+ moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@annathepiper @rmd1023 whelp that's a yes xD

rmd1023,

@annathepiper @moira How utterly fucking awesome! (Now I have to not go enthuse about this to her because she hates spoilers and knows where I sleep.)

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@rmd1023 @annathepiper it was very silly

in the best ways

wrog,
@wrog@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@annathepiper @rmd1023 @moira

crap, I have to start watching SNW again?

(I thought I was done when I heard that they did a musical episode, which normally you're supposed to have to wait 6 seasons for, and I'm like, "wait, they're running out of ideas this quickly? aaaaaa")

annathepiper,
@annathepiper@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@wrog @rmd1023 @moira Season 2 didn't suck, even the musical episode. Dara didn't care for it but I liked it better. The technobabble reason for why everybody was bursting into song was admittedly flimsy. But HOLY CRAP Uhura can sing. <3

And it did also drop a significant side plot point. If you decide to watch the season but skip that episode anyway (and it IS mostly skippable) come back and I'll tell you what the important plot point is.

wrog,
@wrog@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@annathepiper @rmd1023 @moira

No. I'll watch it if I have to. I've just been generally annoyed at all of the stupid shit (doing severe violence to the canon for No Reason: rewrite of Balance of Terror made no sense. having Enterprise-style ships land on planets?retconning the Gorn? inventing completely new federation directives (forbidding genetic stuff? wtff) that make zero sense all so that they can point out how stupid they are. and oh sure let's make the transporter even MORE MAGICAL) ... especially annoying because I really like the casting and wanted the show to succeed, but bleah...

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@wrog @annathepiper @rmd1023 Eh, the AU version that didn’t happen of Balance of Terror did at least make what Spock does in Menagerie 100% believable, which I thought did it a solid.

Plus there’s like no genetic anything in TOS and the weird aversion to it goes back to TNG (basically as an explanation for why there isn’t any) so given the current context it’s good with me that they’re exploring it.

(Even if overall I’m in a similar but less exasperated camp. I love the cast and characters but I put up with the stories most of the time. So I’m not really disagreeing I’m just “this is why I’m still watching.”)

wrog,
@wrog@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@moira @annathepiper @rmd1023

The unbelievable part of Menagerie was NEVER about how Spock could do what he did.

It was about why, afterwards, Kirk, Star Fleet, or anyone else would EVER trust Spock with anything EVER AGAIN.

(You want to give him a one-time exemption from the Talos Death Penalty because he solved The Problem of Captain Pike and everybody agrees it's The Right Thing (*)?

Fine, do that.

But you're ALSO going to be revoking his security clearances and asking for his resignation fucking yesterday, because anybody who's demonstrated themselves capable of pulling that level of shit very badly needs to Not Be In Star Fleet Anymore.)

(*) actually, I'm still not convinced of this either, but that's another argument.

annathepiper,
@annathepiper@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@wrog @moira @rmd1023 The "wait a minute now" thing I always have with Pike's fate is, why exactly Federation medical technology wasn't capable of doing anything besides dooming him to being trapped in that chair for the rest of his life.

This is a setting where twice now we've seen Klingons surgically altered to look like humans,, we've seen Kirk himself surgically altered to look like a Romulan (and had that reverted as of the end of the episode), we've seen McCoy slip a 20th century woman a pill that made her grow an entire new kidney, and we've seen people pull off medical miracles by using somebody's last known pattern in the transporter buffer.

So WTF was keeping them from helping Pike? o.O

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@annathepiper @wrog @rmd1023 The desperate desire to tell that The Cage story since they spent all that money on it is why xD

annathepiper,
@annathepiper@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@moira @wrog @rmd1023 LOL yes. :D "Because PLOT is why!"

wrog,
@wrog@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@annathepiper @moira @rmd1023

to be fair, I don't think anybody in 1967 anticipated we were going to be able to do the Stephen Hawking Thing anywhere near as soon as we did (cf. Issac Asimov in 1950 imagining pocket calculators as this 10,000 years in the future thing when it only took until 1972.)

Note that SNW authors writing in 2021 do not get to use the same excuse.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@wrog @annathepiper @rmd1023 But they still have to deal with it unless you want even more ripping up of canon!

"Okay, they can totally fix Pike after the accident now, lol TOS who needs continuity?"

(Legitimately tho' where both this and the Spock's Brain surgery thing meet is "we can't regenerate, much less reconnect, nervous system cells, it's not a thing they do." This was prevailing medical belief at the time and was wrong.)

re "The Problem of Captain Pike"

So... My Talosian headcanon:

They figured out EARLY (in "The Cage") they were going to have to be a LOT more subtle to get anything useful out of the humans -- confirmed once finished going through the records, which went MUCH faster than depicted in the episode.

Guy in Charge of Humans, originally Somebody's Nephew, got replaced very quickly, probably after that 1st illusion with Pike crashed and burned.

They then had to work out a convincing Escape Narrative -- none of the phasers in that sequence were real -- and then some kind of long term plan to get to a Talos redevelopment contract with some federation mining/colonization agency/corporate-entity.

@moira @annathepiper @rmd1023

Hunchback Veena = total fake (her ship has records, too; and once she's awake, her memories tell them what to fix, so she's rebuilt just fine).

Yes, they would need a real Veena to know what kind of distress call to send, how to do fake encampment, interact with Pike convincingly, etc.

But she also knew too much, so no way in hell would they ever let her go, and something like HV would have been the only way to convince Pike to leave her behind.

(After: "Okay, assholes, I did EVERYTHING you asked. Vegas Honeymoon. Then you fucking KILL ME ALREADY. That was the deal. Otherwise, it's replays of Saw III and Event Horizon from now on."

13 years later, she's gone, one way or another.)

@moira @annathepiper @rmd1023

I'll assume for sake of argument their hallucination range doesn't QUITE reach SB11, otherwise they just subvert entire base from the get go, but...

ability to reach even halfway there includes a HUGE volume of space with lots of ships passing through (why else would SB11 exist?). All sorts of opportunities for mischief AND they'd have learned to be careful about it.

I'm sure Pike's accident was arranged.

Even stipulating they only make contact with people they'd previously encountered (i.e., familiar minds only), e.g., Spock,

... there's 250+ OTHER Cage-era Enterprise crew that would be eligible.

What's #1 or Yeoman Colt doing these days? I bet they'd have issues that could be exploited.

@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@wrog @annathepiper @rmd1023 "I'll assume for sake of argument their hallucination range doesn't QUITE reach SB11"

Except we know it does because Fake Commodore Mendez came from there with Kirk.

wrog, (edited )
@wrog@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@moira @annathepiper @rmd1023

Thing is, if SB11 were in range continuously for 13+ years, they'd be subverting the shit out of it. There'd never be any need to hijack Enterprise.

So there has to be some reason that wouldn't work.

Best I can come up with it's right on the edge (i.e., not close enough for major skullduggery). But SB folks can pack Kirk onto the shuttle by himself and get him launched (as they actually did), and with Kirk having been awake for 36+ hours, it's that much easier for T4 to plant at least the vague suggestion of Mendez changing his mind and coming along right before Kirk finishes setting the autopilot and dozes off.

And then by the time he wakes up, he's fully in range with "Mendez" in the copilot seat

jmw,

@moira How'd the finished com badge turn out?

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@jmw my printer is Not Fast

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@jmw i mean it doesn't help that it was like 10-15 minutes in and i saw something i didn't like so i made a small change and started over but still

it started life as an ender 3 v2 and while i've made a lot of upgrades and stuff it's still not faster

a lot more accurate and can print bigger things for sure, but

not faster xD

jmw,

@moira very similar to my FrankenEnder5. Only the frame and kinematics are effectively the same. Different pulleys, belts, extruder, heaters, control board, firmware, screen, fans, etc.
Oh! And the 24v PSU.

But it's nice that I can just go "hmm, ABS today? No, maybe nylon. Yeah!" And just print whatever.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@jmw I stick with plant-derived plastics, though I can tell you it's worth it even with those to go to at least an all-metal or better yet bimetallic hotend (what I did), just for all the clogging issues you stop having.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

yeah i'm pretty sure i've accidentally figured out exactly how they made these in show xD

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

I really wish I had a better blank to print with this. All I've got is plain Creality generic black PLA, which ... okay, their white is great prototyping PLA, not the strongest but very good for the value. Their black is okay for the value but it's sloppier than most and wants a weirdly high bed temperature and glossy when i don't want that right now and yeah.

but it's the only black I got right now :/

oh wait no I have some black PHA

maybe i'll reslice for that.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

oh yeah, that's why I don't like silk PLAs. the shitty layer adhesion

[glues furiously]

[gets superglue all over fingers] [is glad for once her skin oils mock off superglue]

Not a bad version 1. It looks a lot like the stills. I'm thinking they're also using white PLA at this angle and sanding with (I stress: with) the layer lines.

They're also using a better black for the frame than I am, probably a matte and not a silk.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

looks better with the frame sanded to matte

it’s a small difference but i prefer it

jmw,

@moira Black Base with a filament change part way or an MMU or some sort?

Edit: derp a derp derp

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@jmw Printed in two parts and fitted together. But you could absolutely do it with a filament change.

jmw,

@moira I am sure printing at an angle would make the filament change harder, but two filaments is how I do multicolor signs albeit printing flat.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@jmw Sure, I've done a bunch of multifilament colour change work too. But in this case, the surface of the badge is a big, smooth curve.

printing that flat would be hideous, and involve acres of sanding, and I'm like 98% sure not what the propmakers did, because the real life ones have this vertical line effect that looks intentional but I'm pretty sure is them taking advantage of smooth layer lines plus directional sanding.

jmw,

@moira I wasn't suggesting otherwise, just making idle, random chatter. It looks great!

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@jmw Well, it's not an unreasonable thought, I mean, I started flat and played around with positioning a lot. But while doing so is when I realised "hm, what if that vertical effect is layer lines?" because we already know they 3D print some of their props, particularly single-episode props, sooooo...

@moira blimey! That coat does look like uniform! Reminds me of this shirt my son used to have.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@jonathankoren To make it really clear: I had it before Lower Decks came out. It's entirely accidental, at least for me. xD

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

I have now verified that with the six rare-earth magnets I am using I can just throw my coat on and take it back off and throw it on the table and the combadge

stays

this actually works, i'm so doomed xD

oobleck,
@oobleck@fosstodon.org avatar

@moira i just acquired a creality printer and I learned so much from this one post in your thread. Tnx

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@oobleck I can't tell if you're joking but if you're not, glad to be of service? xD

I keep wanting to start a wiki about filaments because there are so many and we could use some better data on them.

oobleck,
@oobleck@fosstodon.org avatar

@moira No joke. Totes serious. I know enough about the process to pull info from your rant and it actually addressed some questions I’ve had but didn’t realize i had 🤓

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@oobleck Well, great!

Was it about print orientation? Because getting print orientation right (and remember, you can arrange things however you want) solves so. many. problems.
