Okay, I need some help from the elders: I’m having some surface adhesion issues with PLA and a textured steel sheet. After about 2-3mm, corners start lifting, regularly causing prints to fail. I did a few first layer calibration prints and everything looks perfect. This is on an Mk4 with load cell ABL. I’m using PrusaSlic3r and Prusament PLA with built in profiles.

I washed the sheet thoroughly (with dish soap and then wiped with isopropanol). Do I just need to accept I need a brim?

jmw,

@teotwaki @moira I'd suggest dropping some photos in here to help diagnosis.

For anyone of any decent printer these days a draft shield is totally unnecessary with a heated bed and pla. I print all kinds of junk PLA even when my AC in the same room is running.

What temps are you using?

99% of adhesion issues I see with PLA are a clog (which it could be based on the curling around the nozzle), wrong z-offset or wrong temps. Occasionally over cooling can cause it to curl up towards the nozzle as well.

Of course lay down the first layer without cooling and slowly.

jmw,

@teotwaki @moira usually a clog is a nuisance. They're tricky to detect with certainty, I tend to heat a nozzle to +40 over print temps then extrude a decent amount, then back off to 110. Let it cool, then do a cold pull. Not a guarantee but a good step.

Your bed is 10c hotter than I run personally, which doesn't mean much, but you could try backing it off. 50 is about the average default for pla beds.

Edit: Likewise your nozzle is a fair bit hotter than I print, I usually only cross 215 when I'm pushing high speeds (300-500mm/s).

I'd say back them off a bit and try but that's just my personal experience. Every printer varies.

Have I mentioned how much I appreciate that Lower Decks has turned my pre-existing winter raincoat into an away-team jacket?

jmw,

@moira How'd the finished com badge turn out?

jmw,

@moira very similar to my FrankenEnder5. Only the frame and kinematics are effectively the same. Different pulleys, belts, extruder, heaters, control board, firmware, screen, fans, etc.
Oh! And the 24v PSU.

But it's nice that I can just go "hmm, ABS today? No, maybe nylon. Yeah!" And just print whatever.

jmw,

@moira Black Base with a filament change part way or an MMU or some sort?

Edit: derp a derp derp

jmw,

@moira I am sure printing at an angle would make the filament change harder, but two filaments is how I do multicolor signs albeit printing flat.

jmw,

@moira I wasn't suggesting otherwise, just making idle, random chatter. It looks great!

jmw, to homeassistant

Rolled out a couple sensors in my home automation system. I am really liking because it allows my to use them as devices in both as well as .

Overall they are definitely slower than their counterparts but their ability to actually detect a human is amazing, no more lights turning off if you stop moving.
The only major gripe I have is that they're all higher current draw (by a decent amount I presume by the fact they list needing 5v@1A and none I've seen can use batteries) than pir. That means they all need power nearby and that's a headache when I'd love to do some ceiling installs where I don't have power and they're directing ugly when they're running a cord up the wall from the outlet.

But what can you do, eh?
I'm waiting on my and 's wireless power, any day now.

jmw,

@stooovie it will. Millimeter wave is sensitive enough that they claim to be able to sense a heartbeat and breathing with it.

in something like a day my headmate went from "this random spool of [natural, non-CF] nylon" to "able to produce nylon parts with fusion so good that my gf has spent the better part of a night bending the [flat] part over and over trying to break it with as much vigor and force as she could and she only got one tiny part of it to delaminate a little after literal hours and hours of it"

check out this surface finish. what the heck

    jmw,

@whitequark the diamond nozzles from DiamondBack are grossly overengineered and worth every penny. My rubies no longer see action; Also PC-CF is a godsend for fixing all the problems PC has.

just checked a major review site and not a single smart TV was released in the past two years without integrated ads that you can't opt out from or disable. that's depressing.

    jmw,

@gsuberland while not exactly a solution it's the reason I never ever ever connect a new TV to the Internet. I'd rather use dedicated devices than be served ads because I used Disney Plus (for example).

    jmw, to sysadmin

    Seriously @microsoft, What the shit?

You roll out a NEW "better", "lighter" Teams client for everyone, and let's see here, lemme check my notes:

    • You offer an upgrade toggle, visible to all users, despite any existing Teams Upgrade Policy (controlled by an admin).
    • When people DO click it (Because they're curious, of course and it shows as available to them), it launches a product that isn't allowed to run throwing a vague error message. Causing issues for users and helpdesk staff alike.
    • This new version of teams is literally named "NEW Teams".
That's the best name you could come up with? Really? If you search for "New Teams", you already released a client called the "New" client years ago. Way to create more confusion.
    • You do random, rolling upgrades, that break existing features in clients (e.g. Outlook "New Teams Meeting" buttons that no longer work) and then ... (next bullet point)
    • Your own troubleshooter isn't aware that "New Teams" exists. It checks for the Windows Installer GUID (I presume) of the "Classic" client, and when it's not there, it bails. Need to troubleshoot New Teams? GFL.
    • The "New Teams" client doesn't use MSI, classic and well managed, it uses an MSIX which is only visible through "Apps and Features" rather than "Add / Remove Programs". (More a general headache, but yes, I know is a thing and 'coming')
    • Piles upon piles of commands are basically dead (ahem, known issues) but hey, NEW CLIENT! Right guys?

    Not a fan Microsoft.

I get that asking for our preferences, then doing everything you can to ignore our responses is basically your middle name but you're killing me.

    @writeblankspace @microsoft
No argument there. Unfortunately it's systemic problems.

Nobody WANTS ads in their operating system that they paid for, but here we are with ads in Windows 10 & 11.

Nobody WANTS to ship all their browsing data off to Microsoft through edge, but they add a new setting that's opt-out and here we go again.

Edit: Who knows why I typed what I typed, but it was clearly the wrong word. Those responsible have been sacked.

In the future, if you happen to have forgotten to order your EclipseGlasses™ ahead of time and can't find a pair anywhere, don't fret!

Just reach for a disk, disassemble it and look through the magnetic media, it works great for the purpose.

Bonus: If photographed correctly, it will also look like the disk is screaming (probably because it was dismembered).

You ever wonder why the small band of spectrum we can see (called visible light) is special? I mean almost all animals see in light ranges are are somewhere around here. I mean sure some can see a little farther into IR or UV but in general all animals see roughly around this same narrow band of frequencies in an otherwise infinite spectrum... So what is so special?

Its actually a quantum thing. Everything roughly around visible light and higher interacts with material by electrons jumping energy levels. However IR energy is absorbed by the bonds between molecules instead, which is why IR represents heat.

Basically visible light is right where these two modes intersect. Essentially they are the lowest energy part of the spectrum that is still high enough energy to interact primarily through changing energy levels of electrons. Essentially any more energy and it wont really get through the atmosphere as extreme UV is cut off.. any lower and it wouldnt be very effecieient cause most of the energy goes to heating the eye rather than seeing... So its right in that sweet spot.

    jmw,

@freemo @SpaceLifeForm I've always wondered how plants know this.

However, if I might ask a stupid question, why do (for example) trees bloom and then (in the fall) lose their leaves at different dates each year? Wouldn't that be the same year to year based on length of daylight?

I'm guessing that other environmental factors also play a role causing a relativistic shift in their "IT'S FALL! LOSE THE LEAVES!" response?

I'm not a gardener nor do I remotely have a green thumb.

    jmw,

@freemo @SpaceLifeForm Thank you for the thoughtful response. I know even less re:cannabis but it's all interesting to me. GG Evolution! GG.

    jmw,
    jmw, to security

Look. I get it. More is better.

    But at what cost?

My gripe today is every website I use suddenly requiring 2FA when there would be little/if any info that could be gained from them.

Does my boardgame collection management site REALLY need to email me a code "JUST TO MAKE SURE IT'S ME"? I am pretty sure they cannot transfer a game from my collection to someone else's with the click of a button.

This becomes even more irksome when it's some random website that I signed up for with a user/pass and NOW it wants to send me emails to confirm it's me. Maybe I'm the only one on the planet however I'm not staring at my inbox 24/7 just waiting for a code. Let me opt out of this junk.

I am NOT against security. all the things for financial, healthcare, identity and other high risk targets (or their tangential sites) but at some point it's just a pain in the ass going back and forth between sites, (which is bad -anyway-), Email, the authenticator app, etc.

That's not even address the fact that these 2FA solutions often seem like security theater, which means it's making my chore longer for zero actual benefit.

    jmw,

@dreadpir8robots I totally agree. I was trying to make it clear that I'm not being a stick in the mud sysadmin screaming "KILL ALL 2FA!". I just despise the of putting 2FA everywhere, just because.

I also know that these methods stop the 'honest thief' but anyone with any real dedication to doing harm can buy 0days, steal cookies, spearphish, gain access to email, sms, etc.

Those looking to do real harm likely aren't going attack services using my creds.
