My is pretty much useless since I lent it out. Every game that's a bit more complex results in a reboot.

Wanted to play Fallout 4 again and despite the fact I reduced the graphics settings and the framerate to 40 after the first crash it still crashed three additional times in the character editor.

Pretty much every 3D game is unplayable since he had it for a few weeks. This is so frustrating.

I wonder if the Steam Deck is just not build for 3 user accounts. Or if some unknown power brick killed it. The Steam Deck is just such a weird device sometimes, it could be everything.

I probably should just reflash it with a clean version of Steam OS to start fresh. Maybe this will solve the problems.

Ok. Let's try to fix the .

Some of you suggested, that I could just reinstall Steam OS and this should fix the problem. If not I could try Re-image the Steck Deck, as a radical solution.

Fingers crossed.

Well. Reinstalling Steam OS was intended to keep logins and games. That failed, everything is gone. That's okay, but I wanted to try it this is enough.

Anyway, I Re-Image it now so the software is completely "untouched".

@kaiserkiwi Sounds like that person you loaned it to owes you a little sumthin' sumthin' for your time and trouble to undo whatever it was that they did to it. :bec_angry:

@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@SynAck It's not said that they did something with the Steam Deck that wasn't right. It’s not uncommon that the Steam Deck crashes under the load of multiple users.

It could be that it's a hardware defect. It could be that it was just software. I will see it after the Fallout 4 download is finished, so not today.

If something is still not right after this reset I will ask them if they did something with the Steam Deck, that could have caused this. And then I only have their word.

SynAck,
@SynAck@corteximplant.com avatar

@kaiserkiwi ah, okay. I didn't realize that multi-user Decks were known to be unreliable. Still sucks, though. Sorry that you have to go through all that rigamarole.

Ugh.

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@SynAck It happens. When I was younger I did stuff like this all the time so it was kind of nice and a fresh start is sometimes not as bad as it sounds.

Just annoying that my internet is so bad that I have to wait to check if it helped :D

Yeah I would prefer if tech just works, but to be honest… Not in this capitalist world. Everything is assembled as cheap as possible and sometimes even cheaper that that so stuff like that is expected.

@kaiserkiwi @SynAck did he maybe change voltages in bios? With the current bios this was made possible by Valve.

This also could explain instability.

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@markrimmel @SynAck Do you have anything to read about this? I don't think they did but I would like to know more.

@kaiserkiwi @SynAck Stanto has a lot of information about the Steamdeck BIOS. How to tinker with is mostly. https://www.stanto.com/

In one of the posts, he mentioned this Reddit post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/t6yhg7/i_messed_up_and_disabled_the_usb_entirely_in_the/hzeox5w/

A Valve employee explains on how to reset the bios.

@markrimmel @SynAck Thank you! I will look into it.

Looks like it worked. I could play absolutely normally and the didn't even get hot. When I tried it before the reset the fans were loud as fuck and the device was a toaster.

The last time I had to reinstall the OS of a device because it had problems under normal use was Windows 7. And this was a long time ago.

@kaiserkiwi huzzah! Great success! :cathumbsup:

@kaiserkiwi Odd, I really wonder what the person did to it.

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@Radgryd It's a first generation device. It wouldn't surprise me when it was just something odd after many updates and with three Steam accounts.

But I wonder if they had the same problem.

@kaiserkiwi

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

😅 Dumm gelaufen.

@kaiserkiwi Maybe he has tweaked the voltages in the Bios? Just a guess but it sounds like that for me.

@kaiserkiwi You know what might help? Download a copy of the SteamOS Steam Deck image and reinstall it. It helped me. My Steam Deck decided not to work properly anymore out of the blue. Now it works fine.

@krafty Hm… I might give it a try. Never thought about it before. 🤔
Thanks for the suggestion!
