This is wonderful news but seeing the list of patrons, why does #Valve not join the sponsorship programme though? - I know (or I think at least) that they often/occasionally sponsor #KDE (as an org, or devs) to do some work for them, and I'm not denying that they contribute a lot through funds/code to #FOSS/#Linux, but seeing that the #SteamDeck comes shipped with #KDEPlasma (which I still think is a really smart decision) and since Plasma is a huge part of the Steam Deck (literally half of the software exp), it'd be great to see Valve commit to a recurring sponsorship programme to the KDE folks.

They certainly have the money for it, surely. I hope this will be true someday.

are refunding Helldivers 2 even though it's that are being morons.

I know Steam are not without criticism, but can you tell me of one other modern company that would do this for many thousands of its customers?

I'm the first to attack companies for bad practice but I also hand out deserved praise when companies act properly and deserve a lot of credit for how they've handled this.

I only wish there was some other way to reward them as I'm already a regular customer.

https://www.gamesradar.com/after-years-of-supporting-mods-and-fan-games-valve-takes-action-against-team-fortress-and-portal-fan-projects/

I mean, fair is fair. You don't just nilly-willy port 's assets or any other developer's IP, for that matter, without licensing. It's problematic not only for the violator, but for originator down the line, as well. Such is the case with , and same with privately made gizmos from .

Whether some proprietary things were made in good faith or not is irrelevant, because, from standpoint of business, both this and depending project end up in association of some sort (unlike endorsement where both sides support each other on "paper").

> some amateur devs might start thinking twice before they start their next Half-Life fan project

...is but a consequence of dev understanding that their fan game won't make it to the finish line where it can proudly stay storefront and let Valve rest in comfort, knowing that it's linked to decent use of assets and not yet another wasteland.

A VERY important video. Relevant to EVERYONE who cares about #teamfortress #tf2

This NEEDS to be more widespread. Say what you will about Zesty Jesus, but regardless of your opinion on him - this is a VERY important video he & his collaborators have made.

THIS VIDEO NEEDS TO BE SPREAD AROUND.

I strongly implore you - watch this video. You will very, very quickly realize how absolutely horrible of a state Team Fortress 2 has been in for YEARS.

This is not a joke.

Him talking about "toxic positivity" surrounding TF2 is also incredibly true, and something I've personally experienced myself. Both Reddit & Steam.

People praise TF2 to high heavens like it's the best game ever made. But often times do not realize how absolutely dire & horrible things actually are within TF2.

Pretty fucking please watch this video. It's very extremely important, I IMPLORE you.

Z góry mówię - zawsze byłem prounijny, popierałem UE i wprowadzenie w Polsce Euro.

Nonsens! A, no i jeszcze robią dokładnie to samo co Apple, czyli pobierają prowizję od sprzedaży. No i oczywiście nie mają sideloadingu, ale to oczywiście jeszcze mogę wybaczyć (chociaż Apple’owi też mogłem…). Antykonsumenckie praktyki! Za to uwielbiam () - nie stosuje ich w !

I've had a very enjoyable conversation this morning about Linux, and specifically Linux Gaming. From my perspective this is now absolutely on par with the Windows gaming experience but of course that opinion isn't universal.

I apparently did enough to convince the chap I was talking to to give it a try, prompting me to have an immediate crisis of confidence that someone was actually listening to me on the internet and omg what if I've over-sold it?!? 🤣 I run a Gaming Distro: it's entirely possible I've lucked into this experience with my choice to run it because of things the distro maintainers have set up for me.

But I have faith in Proton. Proton / a.k.a Steam Play is a genuine Miracle for Linux.

When Valve launched Proton in [stresses memory] 2018? 17? it suddenly and gloriously catapulted Linux from an awkward, arcane and painful third place in terms of Personal Computer platform game compatibility all the way up to parity with Windows. ProtonDB now lists 20'000+ previously Windows-only games that at least one person has reported works for them on Linux (Many other games could work that just don't have reports yet). ProtonDb, a volunteer-run website, is also fabulous as it grades compatibility. Platinum for Works out of the Box, Gold for Works with Tweaks/Tinkering, Silver for works but with larger issues, Bronze for Doesn't work.

The Steam Deck (which runs on Steam OS, a Linux distribution) couldn't have launched without proton. The Deck is also having a hugely positive effect on Linux Gaming.

You want proof of how good the situation is? Here's a WINDOWS-FOCUSED website extolling Proton's virtues.

Top Tip: if default Proton doesn't work you have two options in Steam: the Experimental version, basically the upstream beta, or there's the 'Glorious Eggroll' [GE] version, created by a single person, that includes fixes for some games that Valve haven't officially included.

If yon chap has anything near the wonderful time I've had playing games from my Steam and GOG libraries on Linux this last year, I'm sure he'll be fine and I'll have avoided a reputation for being all mouth and no trousers. 🙂

I find programs / applications that assume all storage is an SSD so infuriating, especially when it is blatent laziness or extremely uneseccary.

For instance, only starts loading character models once you enter a lobby. If you use a harddrive you will be kicked (abandon) for inactivity before your screen unfreezes from loading assets... the only way to solve this is to play a match against bots first

I get that new devs might not have a deck, but does not have a sim?

Deck ‘verified’ = more likely to buy.

If I buy, play, not good on deck, refund then Steam will hit me.

I do not see an easy win-win for devs/players here which hurts everyone.

There has to be a solution?
