I played one of this game’s endless march of pre-release versions last year on . It provided some of the finest hours of gaming I’ve ever experienced, stopped dead by one of the absolute worst single moments.

I hope they’ve tuned that balance a little better! (Though honestly that mostly means “make non-permadeath the first option on the new-game screen, and rename the options to suggest it’s the best starting place”)

@jmac it seems like the problem stems from the question of whether it’s a roguelike or an RPG. Maybe it was initially conceived of as the former but became the latter over the course of development?

@akahn @jmac it’s been a while since I’ve played it, but always starting in the same town and going through the same motions after dying was tedious, so I didn’t make very many attempts. But I read there’s an “rpg mode“ now without permadeath?

@spinning_bird I played it early last year, and it did indeed have a "role-playing mode" that is identical to "classic mode" except that you get a restorable checkpoint every time you visit a settlement.
