It's still a strange condition that doctors hadn't seen previously (though it may have been a known condition generally). Unexpected and anomalous. I'm usually critical of the headlines and sensational stories but this one was pretty impressive.
Oh, the blood river in Antarctica comes from "an extremely salty subglacial lake under high pressure, with no light or oxygen, and a microbial ecosystem that’s remained isolated for millions of years."
Totally doesn't sound like the premise of a horror story.
I feel like the people that believe these machines to work as advertised will be easily convinced that their true inner workings are too advanced for the non-indoctrinated to understand.
This looks like an explosive because of the flash that accompanies it. Many similar explosions happen every year. What are people blowing up in suburban areas and why?
... My first reaction to this was, "Why have I never heard of this?!"
My second was, "Actually, it's probably good I've never heard of it. It would've become the centerpiece of my Call of Cthulhu game years ago."
