Eyes on Taiwan, lots of earthquake damage especially in Hualien City on the east coast, constant aftershocks, tsunami warning as far as Guam and the Philippines

east coast of Taiwan is a sharp mountain drop to an alluvial plain, so liquefaction played a role in building collapses

difference is Taiwan has major EQ building standards, so even if the building rocks off a foundation, it stays together, does not pancake, saving lives

@MatWright That's only in the urbanized areas. Poor people in Taiwan would not say the same. There's a huge margin between societal classes in Taiwan. Poor folks have no voices & are not given the help or supports they need.

@msquebanh Earthquake-resilient building standards are a good thing. I don't understand what point you're trying to make.

I thought for a moment you were saying urban dwellers should die in earthquakes until rural poverty has been completely eliminated, but I'm pretty sure that's not it.

@krans @MatWright I'm saying the people who can't afford to live in modern buildings, who have actually lived in Taiwan longer than many in those modern buildings - also deserve more help & better housing.
They are the ones who die in large numbers because they don't have any quality infrastructures.

@krans @MatWright I am 100% supportive of natural disasters infrastructure builds & proactive planning. I dislike how skewed the victims ratios are. When we can definitely do much better.

@krans @MatWright Also, there are many living in daily poverty anxiety in urban Taiwan area - it's not limited to rural, with poverty issues. The poor in Taiwan live in extremely tough & mostly illegal housing. Taiwan tries to keep world from seeing or hearing about their poor & unhoused citizens. Silence feeds violence on poor folks. Silence helps poor folks feel like no one supports them. Silence only helps the privileged.

@msquebanh oh, agreed - but at least in the urban tower residential/commercial areas the EQ building standards saved lives

on that, they are WAY ahead of us

a 7.7 hitting Vancouver or Victoria and watch the entire downtown get destroyed

@MatWright Yup, and similar safety construction concerns were given to BC govt in 1992. My Uncle was part of the report committee. They ignored recommendations on safer construction with natural disaster planning in blueprints. Tossed out. The government doesn't actually want to help any people. They don't care about anything except themselves & their pensions.
