One of the striking things about the ban is it makes certain type of source code, even , effectively illegal. Aside from intellectual property law, source code has never been made illegal. The bill specifically says it is illegal to "distribute, maintain, or update" TikTok source code and it is also illegal for an "internet hosting service" to enable such actions.

I'm not a lawyer and to me the bill's text is ambiguous because it doesn't clarify if the source code should be specific to the "application", or any source code that is used by the application to function.

Perhaps @eff can shed some light on the matter.
