I collect these. I call them "design in the wild" where end users fix design mistakes on their own. It's a bit shocking how often this happens. Think of how bad it has to be to reach this point.

@scottjenson wouldn't the door have just opened before you lock it? There are only two states. Meaning whatever it was when you entered is unlocked.

@scottjenson Here's one I did a few years ago, it's still in service and makes it possible for the children to do their own laundry with reasonable settings. (Helps myself too.)

@scottjenson Betcha' @genecowan has a TON of these! 😂

@scottjenson
I bought a 3-pack of water leak sensors that communicate with a app-vertisement on my phone. They're identified using the last 4 digits of some unique ID number that is not printed anywhere on the outside of the devices.

I ended up triggering each one with a wet paper towel, then printing labels for them.

@RealGene @scottjenson Govee? Because I have been there…

@cassidy @RealGene @scottjenson literally most brands of zigbee water sensors are like this...you have to pair and/or trigger them one at a time and label them as you go because there is an unspoken rule that you must present a challenge to your customers or something I dunno

Also...temperature+humidity sensors have this tendency too because home IoT must be trash in every way :blobcheeky:

@scottjenson here's one from me; I, in a sleepy haze, had poured a scoop of coffee beans onto the transparent lid of my grinder one too many times. I recently picked up some spray primer that would probably adhere to this plastic, so I might decorate this a bit more fancifully. Or at least use some cool stickers.

@eamon @scottjenson blue painter's tape is the unsung hero of my house. From labeling things like otherwise entirely unmarked switched outlets to labeling leftovers, it’s a great fix for anything temporary to mostly-permanent.

@scottjenson it's the child like wonder hitting the real world of " I just want to do something."

Not every moment actually needs or wants wonder.

I no longer know if it's lack of ability, people who just don't care and/or are trying to just get through their job.

scottjenson,

@jonoabroad I realize I'm a bit picky but some of these things are just horrible and I'm astounded people think it's a good idea. Most likely, they just don't think...

@scottjenson I'm a strong believer than if the bottom 75% of us stayed out of the way and let the top 25% of people get on with it. Humanity could accomplish amazing things.

TBC - I am not sure I'm in the top 25% so this isn't a " oh look at me, I'm amazing" post."

@jonoabroad @scottjenson @jonoabroad Or perhaps you are amazing and/or in the top 25% but humble with it.

@scottjenson My office has 2 doors. Both turn in opposite directions to lock them.

I can't say I have a fix beyond being aware of this problem...

DanielMReck,
@DanielMReck@mas.to avatar

@alcinnz @scottjenson Yes, I work in IT at a where the doors can be momentarily openned by turning the key one direction and fully unlocked the other direction. Of course, the turn direction for each function is inconsistent on every door.

I put this label on our office suite two years ago and it's always nice to hear a new colleague see it and say, "Oh this is great, the doors in this place are so confusing."
