The whole #Nobel prize situation with Katalin Karikó, who was previously pushed out of #UPenn and forced to become an adjunct would be deeply funny except… I’m all too familiar with the exploitation of being an adjunct professor.
My mother is a literal refugee from #Ukraine who teaches at #Cornell as an adjunct - she STARTED their Ukrainian program. Her classes get over enrolled in within a day with tons of demand. Students love her.
Like we ain't talking about some underfunded public community collegue where the amount of people who don't need to get a loan for the tuition can be counted on the fingers of a single hand and where's just one CS lab room with 20 PCs running Windows XP for 200+ Students...
@mariyadelano Harvard took 9 million in stimulus money from the federal government then fired all their food service workers in spring '20. Harvard has a 50 billion dollar endowment. If that did not wake people up to how poorly the universities treat people I don't know what will. Maybe there is a chance now that the adjunct prof won a Nobel.
@brinnbelyea@mariyadelano I can only judge by what I know of University of California, but even before the internet ate newspapers' lunch the coverage was poor. That's a huge part of the problem. Many USians don't know how this stuff works because our media aren't on the university/state college beat as a regular thing...except when it comes to certain sports where the public subsidizes employee development for NBA, NFL, MLB...

Do you know how guilty I feel closing client contracts that pay more for 3 months of part-time work than her annual income?
Do you know how difficult it is, as a 25 year old, to wonder if I should pay off my business loan / husband’s student loans or help my mother afford to put food on the table?
Can you imagine the unbearable shame of thinking that we will be paying $15k in rent and agent fees alone for our first month in NYC in a few months while my family can’t afford childcare?
@mariyadelano I’m so sorry you and yours are going through this. I hope this thread doesn’t cause further problems for you. So many things you mention are ridiculously unfair. I’m glad you can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Universities have the wrong economic model. It hurts almost everyone and spends money on the wrong things.
@mariyadelano One of my best professors in grad school was totally shafted by the UC system.
He was a great teacher, which doesn't count for much.
He was also a good researcher, but his work was derailed by stupid politics.
It's ironic that in corporate research, motivated by the worship of mammon, there is generally a much more congenial and supportive environment than the backstabbing world of academia, supposedly motivated by an idealistic pursuit of pure knowledge!
