I am in a very good mood this evening so somehow this is not even particularly touching me, but …

“Rising temperatures, heavier rainfall and more frequent and intense extreme weather are projected to cause $38tn (£30tn) of destruction each year by mid-century, according to the research, which is the most comprehensive analysis of its type ever undertaken, and whose findings are published in the journal Nature.”

“The hefty toll – which is far higher than previous estimates – is already locked into the world economy over the coming decades as a result of the enormous emissions that have been pumped into the atmosphere through the burning of gas, oil, coal and trees.

This will inflict crippling losses on almost every country, with a
disproportionately severe impact on those least responsible for climate disruption, further worsening inequality”

I know! I mean, staggering! But just as in my family WhatsApp group, where i also shared it, i anticipate it to make no splash whatsoever; that things will just continue, as they always do

[D] In den Kommentaren mancher Klimaaktivisten macht sich hässlicher Zynismus angesichts der jüngsten Überschwemmungen in breit: " hat es verdient." Wie billig!

[E] In the comments of some climate activists, ugly cynicism is spreading in view of the floods in : " deserves it! How cheap!

@tinderness i have to say i am often struck but this too. Once i shared an article about people in the Hamptons (i think) spending $100,000 on a sandbank to protect their houses against coastal erosion and it was swept away jn one day - reply after reply nothing but Schadenfreude! Or farmers’s fields flooded - they deserve it because of their stupid anti-climate protests. Of course not untrue, but still - am always struck by how ok it is to be pretty callous online.

Scotland to ditch key climate change target

What’s with all this ditching of climate targets at the moment? It’s positively trendy! Meanwhile Dubai flooding, Arctic permafrost officially becoming a source of greenhouse gases, etc etc etc

[*EDIT: I shouldn’t have shared this and headline uncritically and thrown SNP together with everyone else “ditching”. Reasons are more complicated - Westminster related - in Scotland. See replies].

High time to feature a @firstdogonthemoon cartoon on ! Today’s a scathing assessment of Tanya Plibersek, Australia’s Minister for Environment and Water.

As First Dog On The Moon expresses so perfectly:

It’s one thing for conservative baddies to sell out to the fossil fuel industry, another for a Labour government that was brought through a huge grass root mobilisation effort, wanting better climate action.

It’s spring and it’s wonderful. So much joy, beauty, abundance, grandeur from nature, just there, in my otherwise mundane neighbourhood. Bluebells feel very early, along with everything else, but i also want to relish and be grateful for all whilst we still have it.

We Are Living in the Pyrocene—At Our Peril.

Ancient prophecies of worlds destroyed by fire are becoming realities. How will we respond?

"Mythology has morphed into ecology. We’re witnessing a slow-motion Ragnarok—a story from Norse mythology in which a great battle burns the world. Climate history is becoming a subnarrative of fire history".

By Steve Pyne, a historical ecologist working on fire.

@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

@inquiline So sad. Your post made me look her up. What a Wikipedia page!

“McAlevey contends that only workers have the power, through organization, to force significant change in the workplace and in society at large. Her model, what she calls whole-worker organizing, sees workers and the community they live in as a whole. The underlying theory of change requires a systematic, grassroots mass organization of workers.”

It seems, IS, utterly crazy, that amidst everything else the UK government is ruthlessly continuing its clampdown on climate protesters. But it is.

Excellent article by Natasha Walter here on how Dr Sarah Benn got 30 days in prison for holding up a placard saying “Stop New Oil” and overall recent developments:

“the direction of travel is fast and frightening and its repercussions are growing.”

and now Dr Benn has also been found guilty of professional msiconduct, by a Medical Practitioners Tribunal. This is deeply wrong. Holding up a sign and protesting - for planetary, human health! - does not constitute medical misconduct. I hope many will speak up against this.

Germany’s out of hand, crazy version of anti-antisemitism continues in full swing. Last week cancellation of Nancy Fraser, this week that of the rector of Glasgow University.

Dr Ghassan Abu-Sittah, a British-Palestinian medic, has claimed he was invited to give a conference in Berlin about his work as a surgeon in Gaza but was denied entry to the country.

@Shivviness yes, very much this. See some of the discussions in response to my post. Some things being said are truly awful, yet i am sure the people saying them think of themselves as good and moral people (morally superior, in fact). I don’t have energy to respond to it all, especially as I know it wil be pointless, but it is all there.

#Budget #UKPolitics This article by Gary Stevenson is so good, please read every word of it.

“Whatever Jeremy Hunt says, traders know the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. And they’re paid millions to bet on it.”

This is what the world is - it is run by a minute elite for a minute elite and the rest of us, the masses, the natural world, we just don’t count. It is a #TragedyOftheNonCommons (will reshare my own piece on this below 1/n)

🧵 26/n An outstanding review by Will Davies (my Goldsmiths colleague) of Brett Christopher’s “The Price is Wrong”: about our neoliberal political economy (using a Braudelian distinction btw “the market” and “capitalism” - SO useful) and how this explain why investments in fossil fuels continue to vastly outstrip those in renewables. Key point: Capitalism IS rent-seeking.

https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v46/n07/william-davies/antimarket

pvonhellermannn,
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

🧵27/n The piece btw contains a necessary critique of my sci-fi “money rules” take a few posts above. Although i still like the idea of all this being a kind of superorganism. But yes, it is about power - political economy, not just economy.

pvonhellermannn, (edited )
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

🧵 28/n But honestly, just read this piece - everything in this 🧵 in one brilliant analysis. And, crucially, using to explain lack of climate action. This is what everyone, each one of us, needs to think about! “Ecologically speaking, neoliberalism couldn’t have come at a worse time.”

Here Christopher’s book itself:
The Price is Wrong. Why Capitalism Won’t Save The Planet.
