Hey 😁

What would it take for you to join (or at least checkout) an club? What would make it appealing to you? What hinders you from doing so?

I'm currently setting one up with the goal to support underrepresented groups (for instance women) in the sport of @archery.

Disclaimer: The club is going to be based in Germany and has nothing to do with hunting. It's a sole recreational and competitive sports club.

Please for reach! 🚀

Thank you for taking the time! 🙌♥️

@odddev @archery

Will you just be forming an interest group, or will you also be administering a facility? A few things the club I'm in does:

  1. Accessible, and near accessible public transit.
  2. Runs Women/BIPOC archers groups, with scheduled meet-ups.
  3. Employs diverse staff—women, people of color.
  4. Gives women/POC employees power to make decisions/plan events.

Good luck!

@odddev @archery Spouse just chimed in and endorsed what I just said, and added: "Make sure he employs badass women who can shoot well." She said the one thing that inspired her the most to return was seeing a female instructor shoot 35 lb barebow and hit yellows. 😎

@ColesStreetPothole @archery Thank you! :ablobfoxbongo:

I will also be administering a facility! It's a new department in our local sports club. We will have outdoor and indoor facilities. 🎉

Nice thoughts! I think it all comes down to being diverse upfront.

@odddev @archery That sounds like fun! 🙂 I wish you luck in finding some badass women archers. 😁

Silvermoon,

@odddev @archery I think an open info session for underrepresented groups would be good. I think I’d enjoy archery. As long as there might be real instructor types there and not ‘more experienced’ male members who would show the little ladies how. Sigh… nope.

Also, I think the pub could be fine, as long as it’s a decent pub. All that being said, I’m in the US, so not much chance of attending, sadly, but now I’m intrigued in 🏹 …

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@Silvermoon @archery Thank you! Good idea. 🙌
I just need to think about how to frame it 🤔 Will also hold the instructor thing in mind. I think having a female mentor would be best.

Go check it out! It's so much fun and from what I know there is a huge community in the US.

Thank you so much! 🚀🚀

DikGelukkig,

@odddev My first thought: if you have a website or other marketing materials that include images, make sure there are photos of women (and other underrepresented people) on there. If I saw only pictures of men, I would hesitate.

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@DikGelukkig Thank you! 🙌 That's an awesome thought! Will definitely respect this.

AshleyMarineP,

@odddev @archery I never thought I would be particularly good at, or even really interested. It felt like a "hunting" sport, and very male coded. I recently went for the first time because my kids wanted to go, and I loved it.

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@AshleyMarineP @archery
Thanks for sharing! 🙌 Very helpful. 🚀

Would it have helped you if you knew more about it's feminist history for example? I thought about extensively informing the public about this, as well as its wide variety of female role models etc.

And Geena Davis herself was inspired to try archery when the sport got a lot of airtime when Americans won lots of Olympic medals in Atlanta 1996. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/geena-davis-explains-why-she-154814498.html

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@sadele2 @archery Oh nice! Thank you. That's awesome resources. 🙌🚀

All I have to do then is make film nights. 😜

sadele2,
@sadele2@mastodon.social avatar

@odddev @archery

Per this 2016 study from Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, the films Hunger Games and Brave (from Disney) influenced girls'/women's decisions to try archery.

AlisonW,

@odddev @archery
I'm in the UK but have often wondered in the past how one might get involved. Never found out though.

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@AlisonW @archery Thanks for the response! Very interesting.
You mean the groups were not approachable enough?

Thank you! 🙌

AlisonW,

@odddev @archery
Never knew where to look.

dodothedev,

@AlisonW @odddev @archery
If you go to the archery GB website, you can find your local club and go for a taster session. It's a great sport, and I highly recommend it.

markgrieveson,
AlisonW,

@markgrieveson @dodothedev @odddev @archery
OK, so I just went and looked and there's a club which meets less than three miles from me and has a beginner's course starting next Monday.
I'm feeling tempted...

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@AlisonW @markgrieveson @dodothedev @archery Do it! 🥳🥳🥳

Keep us posted if you go!

AlisonW,

@odddev @markgrieveson @dodothedev @archery
I've enquired how they feel about wheelchairs ...

dodothedev,

@AlisonW @odddev @markgrieveson @archery
If it helps, I was wheelchair bound and did archery fine for 5 years. I have a friend who is house bound, but manages to shoot in her garden from a wheelchair. She has chronic pain in her arms, legs and back.
I trained with Para-Olympic shooters many of whom were in wheelchairs. I would have joined the 2016 team had they 'allowed' my disability.
Wheelchairs 'stop' you from doing enough. Don't let them take this from you too (meant with respect)

mloxton,
@mloxton@med-mastodon.com avatar

@AlisonW
Please consider trying - good exercise, great for mindful and focused in addition to physical.

@markgrieveson @dodothedev @odddev @archery

adp,

@markgrieveson @archery

Yup - that's the UK archery org - there should be a list of accredited clubs / club search on there somewhere who would run a beginners course.

AlisonW,

@dodothedev @odddev @archery
Oh I'm now too old and disabled, sadly. If I'd known where to go 20-25 years ago though!

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@AlisonW @dodothedev @archery I don't know about your disabilities in detail of course, but generally spoken archery is very accessible for disabled people.

Just so you know 😁

LinuxAndYarn,

@odddev @archery

I've thought about taking kyudo classes, but there's no dojo in my area.

What would guarantee me walking back out the door is there being fewer than three women or 25% of the class, or everyone being the same color.

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@LinuxAndYarn @archery Thank you so much! 🙌 Makes sense 🤔

brandonlivesin,

@odddev @archery My partner is a top barebow archer in the US. She says the main thing is that there are other women. When she started, if there wasn’t a woman on the team already, she wouldn’t have felt welcome. In tournaments, there’s a lot more camaraderie between the women competitors. So maybe start by getting a group of women to join together.

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@brandonlivesin @archery Thank you! Awesome insights. 🙌

@proficisci @archery Thank you for your answer! Very interesting. I already thought about having more meditative offers. I think it would also benefit the people more on the competitive side.

Very helpful! Thank you ☺️

Judeet98,

@odddev @archery My sister's partner went to one, mostly old blokes who were very nerdy types and each meeting ended with pie, chips and beer in the local pub. The only women members were wives of male members.

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@Judeet98 @archery Thank you! 🙌

May I ask what she would have preferred instead of "men-pub-activity"?

Judeet98,

@odddev @archery Women instructors, more women members, tea and cake in a local café.

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@Judeet98 @archery Thank you! Very helpful. 🙌

Judeet98,

@odddev @archery That's the kind of club I'd like to join...I have a bow and some arrows but only practice in my back garden.

RustyBertrand,

@odddev @archery I did archery in the decomissioned nuclear bomb shelters in Finland.

Would love to do again. In Iceland.

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@RustyBertrand @archery Well, that's harsh requirements! 😂

Thanks for sharing.

RustyBertrand,

@odddev @archery

Build me a nuclear bomb shelter damnit!

Lol.

odddev,
@odddev@hachyderm.io avatar

@RustyBertrand @archery Ok, ok, ok going to talk to the major. 🥴

RustyBertrand,

@RustyBertrand @archery Thanks for the material! That'll convince him in no time.

Use the new chess move!

odddev,

@RustyBertrand @archery 😂

"We need a nuclear bomb shelter."
"..."
"..."
"What?"
"What?"
"..."
"In Iceland. For archery purposes."
"What?"
