I just added a note on Phanpy. I really like how prominent the image description field is when you upload an image, and I am guessing this contributes to the notably high use of alt text.

Great work, @cheeaun!

@stefan @cheeaun I really love that you can click on the image to get an even bigger modal with full (?) size image. Great to transcribe text. Also love the warnings when boosting posts w/o alt. 😍

@j3j5 @cheeaun Yes, that is really nice!

I added a note to https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/27731#issuecomment-2110368941, thanks @shlee for posting the screenshot there.

Something that I myself missed when I opened the original ticket is that alt text really should be on the same level of importance as the content of the post itself.

@stefan nice!
How difficult would it be to include the date when the person who posted joined and compute the average "Mastodon age" associated to the groups using each app?
I wonder if there couldn't be a strong confounding factor, namely that early adopters may have used other apps (as the official app was not yet available) and have different practices.
Thus, using something other that the web app or the official app could be strongly correlated with how "old" your presence on Mastodon is.

@silmathoron Thank you!

Yes, that is an interesting thought! The Status object Mastodon returns does actually contain an object describing the author of the post, including the "created_at" field.

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/entities/Status/#example

This is giving me some ideas to play with!

@stefan Cool, this will be much easier than I thought, then!

One other question: how did you choose the list of apps in the highlight? Are these the top apps by numbers or is it something else?

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@silmathoron Great question!

I included the official Mastodon clienst (web + mobile apps), and the most prominent clients that I recognized, most of which are also in high use based on the total post count.

For comparison I included Buffer and Zoho, which are some of the more well-known social media management platforms that support Mastodon (see https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/fediverse-an-overview-for-government-agencies/#fediverse-tools).

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@stefan ok, I was just surprised to see only Tusky in the Android apps (are there mostly US-citizens on m.s?)

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@silmathoron Interesting point. Unfortunately the Status object does not include geographical location, so that's hard to answer.

(Well, it's certainly good for privacy, but it would be a nice opt-in feature.)

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@stefan sure, I just expected to see Fedilab or Subway tooter in the list 😉

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@silmathoron Fair enough!

I added Fedilab to the highlights, it has a decent (compared to the rest) alt text rate at 44.9%.

Subway Tooter did show up in the dataset with only 2 posts, so I think I will leave that one out.

feudjais,
@feudjais@eldritch.cafe avatar

@stefan it would have been interesting to know the number of posts analyzed. Because if there is 60% of 500 posts VS 40% of 8000 posts, it is still a good score I guess ? 🤔

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@feudjais I was hoping it would be sufficient to include the link to the full dataset for further exploration and just present the highlights.

feudjais,
@feudjais@eldritch.cafe avatar

@stefan oh sorry didn't see. I was browsing while working (Shh ! Don't tell my boss 🤫) so I may have not paid enough attention.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@feudjais Ha, no worries! 🤐
