Representation matters.

And that goes for autistic people too.

natriumchloride,

@autism101 @actuallyautistic to be entirely fair though most people who are the type to do the thing from 3rd and 4th panel wouldn't actually see much of a problem about the boards in the top 2 panels either

sentient_water,

@autism101 @actuallyautistic OMG I've been using these analogies for years! I've had allistics literally use the term "Nothing about us without us" then proceed to pay & listen to only allistics while insisting we autistics just do it all voluntarily & anything we said was to be ignored if it contradicted what they believed.

wakame,

@sentient_water @autism101 @actuallyautistic

Don't forget: Only an allistic expert can diagnose you as autistic.

Because they are an expert on your lived experience. :blobcatsweat:

ReimanSaara,

@wakame @sentient_water @autism101 @actuallyautistic

Yes, and they are experts because they are highly educated by and based on materials made by other allistic experts who have observed us veeeeery caaaarefully and without disturbing thoughts that even a single lecture on topics such as ethics of science, history of science, methodology, minority studies, sociology would have brought them. Or even without hearing about empathy gap, for that matter.

sentient_water,

@ReimanSaara @wakame @autism101 @actuallyautistic It's why I call it the Autism Industrial Complex. It is a business, with vested interests & established careers & we are the product. It's why I will not give them a moment of my time ever again.

ReimanSaara,

@sentient_water @wakame @autism101 @actuallyautistic

It's really weird how neurotypical people in autism scene (in Finland at least) are hardly aware of discussions going on in autistic community- and do not consider that a slightest problem.

They are 100% content and believe to be well informed when they are interacting with other neurotypicals on autism scene. It's an echo chamber that enhances and recycles stereotypical thinking and prejudice, harms us and excludes autistic activists.

sentient_water,

@ReimanSaara @wakame @autism101 @actuallyautistic No it's the same everywhere. Ignorance compounding ignorance. They employ tokenism & performative representation because it brings in the money but it's a charade. It's built on horrible, cruel falsehoods & accepted unquestioningly against all evidence to the contrary.

wakame,

@sentient_water @ReimanSaara @autism101 @actuallyautistic

There is this saying about psychologists: They study psychology to finally find out what is wrong with them.

If the same goes for psychiatrists, maybe these are the people most scared that something is "biologically wrong" with them.

From there, it is not a big step to "Autism Speaks" eugenics.

ReimanSaara,

@sentient_water @wakame @autism101 @actuallyautistic

Sadly, that is my impression as well, though I can't help hoping that somewhere on Earth things would be better...

Luckily, my background is in social sciences/philosophy, so I am able to help the autistic whanau to kick back a little.

sentient_water,

@ReimanSaara @wakame @autism101 @actuallyautistic It's ironic but it needed to be written. I do think there are excellent allies but they're few & far between. Exposing this mass exploitation is essential & given that so many allistics will only listen to other allistics about us it may carry more weight. Please let us know some of the insights from your reading.

wakame,

@ReimanSaara @sentient_water @autism101 @actuallyautistic

Why should they care about what "patients" think?

My former ADHD psychiatrist also had ADHD. He told me that his opinion was often seen as "less important/valid" by his colleagues since he takes amphetamines. (Or, more likely, since he is "broken" and not "normal".)

Sometimes I feels as if a lot of psychiatrists exemplify the highest virtues of allism. This is not meant as a compliment.

ReimanSaara,

@wakame @sentient_water @autism101 @actuallyautistic

IDK, maybe because their job is to help patients? Maybe it should matter because their parents are human beings?🤔 And if patients do not feel seen, heard OR helped at all but are traumatized instead, they are obviously doing poor job.

It is well scientifically document how neurominorities are suffering after decades of "help" based on neurotypical understanding.

Acknowledging this seems to be incredibly difficult, though.

sentient_water,

@autism101 @ReimanSaara @wakame @actuallyautistic It's a much needed book am I right in assuming that the author isn't autistic?

sentient_water,

@autism101 @ReimanSaara @wakame @actuallyautistic That's promising. I'll check them out tomorrow. It would be the ideal but I'm all for sincere allistic allies as well. I don't want division but it's usually not coming from us. We want connection, admittedly in a way that we can manage, but we want to be a part of the world. Anyway it's now on my reading list.

It's the same as with animals, people make assumptions and false claims about what they can't experience themselves all the time...

sentient_water,

@FrankBautist @ReimanSaara @wakame @autism101 @actuallyautistic I think it's why so many of us get along better with animals than other humans.

I had to squint/lean in to make out that all the panelists in the third frame were labelled 'Allistic'. Maybe update the alt text, it's not in there.
