@ai6yr@ChristinaBinkley I know. And ziplocks are a reusable item and good to pack your non messy trash out in. Just saying the optics could have been better. Or a single line paragraph “Our next project for sustainability - the plastic bag.”
lower footprint. less chemical leaching (though more study is needed). higher temperature extremes. but main reason is very long-term durable. hard to puncture or tear. can be re-used essentially forever
@exador23@BakerRL75@ai6yr I just read the wiki entry on it and am not convinced that’s the solution. I have replaced plastic with wax paper for a lot of uses. Wouldn’t work for camping tho.
@exador23@BakerRL75@ai6yr On silicone. Solution for footprint. I don’t use ziplocks, but for trash we have started using biodegradable plant based bags. They are not as sturdy but that’s not a big deal to us.
@ChristinaBinkley@exador23@BakerRL75 Definitely an idea. I normally use ziplocs on the trail for trash, but biodegradable would definitely be better... no need to add more plastic! Silicone sounds like a solution for dried fruit and assortment, though I definitely have to try out some different bags (we have some of those here, but half of them I cannot close securely!)
note: the last time I made a comment about #fashion (over on the birdsite) Patagonia sent me a bunch of (used) gear. It's actually awesome quality, it's just (for some reason) there is a distinct group of their fans who we locally call the "Patagucci" crowd, which always buys the latest and greatest for the season as a fashion thing. 🤷 Strange problem for them, I guess. (want to be sustainable--pretty sure Yves Choinard, their founder is focused on this--but your most frequent customers want fashion).
@Geojoek They are HQ'd here in our county, and even here it's a fashion brand. There's a guy I used to go backpacking with (in a big group) who we called "Mr. Patagucci" because he was guaranteed to be wearing the VERY LATEST Patagonia and other luxury hiking/packing stuff, and also gear. We used to compare the front of "Outside's Annual Gear Issue" with what he was wearing to see if he got the full ensemble, LOL.
@Geojoek LOL yes, I got into this discussion with one of their marketing execs a couple of years ago on Twitter, and they sent me a bunch of used Patagonia gear (which is awesome stuff... but the "Patagucci" label is merited here among quite a few of their customers).
