After 15 years of using an iPhone, I'm considering switching to Android. I've ordered a cheap Samsung just to try it for a while before buying a top-end model.
Let's see if I can get used to it.

(I'm also a Mac user so there will be some trade-offs..)

I really like the Busycal iOS app, does anyone know a good alternative? It syncs with my calendar & tasks on Nextcloud.

I've tried Android for 2 weeks on a cheap Samsung, and am getting used to it. Just a few things from the iPhone I am missing, but overall finding my way in the Android ecosystem. I really like how you can tweak the interface as you like it.

So now I've bought a S24 ultra, and so far loving it! Really good quality phone, and a bit cheaper than the iPhone I had.

@ruud I have always liked Android and my first modern smartphone was an Android. My issue with non-iPhone is around long term support. Apple supports iPhones for an amazing amount of time and it seems Samsung and others drop support quickly to push you to the new device. Additionally, they are slow to deliver updates even after upstream Android is deployed. All of that said, I do miss the highly customizable interface.

The latest Google Pixel phones have 7 years of support. I believe Samsung does the same for new Galaxy phones.

This Samsung will be supported for 7 years too 👍

@ruud it has one feature that even a lot of seasoned Samsung users don't know about. If you connect it to a USB-C docking station with a monitor, keyboard and mouse you get a full desktop experience where you can run your applications in windows. Or works better than you might think.

@loke
That sounds very cool, I'm gonna try that!!!

Thanks for the BusyCal and BusyContacts recommendation. Have SetApp versions on Mac. Just added iOS versions on iPhone.

Here's your likely problem. A cheap Android Phone is likely a carrier modified phone. I’m an iPhone user since the original because Apple does not allow the carrier to “enhance" them. Sad experience with a Verizon sourced Motorola E815 in the naughts.

The likely issue will be photos. Google just changed Photos app stuff.

@DismalManorGang I used the Setapp version too but was just using 3 apps so in the end was cheaper to just buy those apps and cancel Setapp.

There are no carrier-modified phones here, afaik. I’ll just go for a cheap Samsung which will surely have a lot of their bloatware on it, but I don’t mind. It’s more about seeing if I can do what I need to do with a phone using Android.

(For photos I use my synology and am trying Immich)

I don't use calendars much, but here are some options to look into:

  • Fossify Calendar
  • Etar
  • DAVx⁵
  • ICSx⁵
  • DecSync CC
  • Nextcloud synchronization client

@ruud I can't say I've needed anything more advanced than Google Calendar, but at this point Android and iOS have stolen so much from each other over the years that you should have no trouble switching.
