albertcardona, Turns out all the "unremovable" Samsung apps from the android Galaxy A14 can be uninstalled after all. It's convoluted, but worth it: far snappier – far more responsive, less memory usage.
- Enable developer options.
- Under developer options, enable USB debugging.
- connect to a laptop via USB.
- Install "adb" (Android Debug Bridge) in the laptop, a command like tool. In Ubuntu 22.04, do "sudo apt install adb". There are packages online for other operating systems.
- Discover which apps to remove. Not trivial, but there are various lists of Samsung "bloatware" online.
- Then, use adb to discover which packages to remove. For example:
$ adb shell pm list packages | grep facebook
.. and then remove them:
$ adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.facebook.services
$ adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.facebook.system
$ adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.facebook.appmanagerLikewise for Microsoft cruft.
- If no apps match the search, then use the "App List" (installable via F-Droid store) to list all user apps or system apps (from a toggle on the top-right menu), which lists all apps by name and with the package name under it.
An app that I removed that indeed drops some possibly valuable services but which greatly improve UI responsiveness:
$ adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.sec.android.daemonapp
The above removes the built-in weather app and various widgets. But suddenly the phone doesn't stall randomly and the UI is snappier than ever.
- If you regret uninstalling a package, it can be reinstalled with adb.
BTW don't forget to re-enable using only 1 background thread every time the OneUI is updated. Samsung overwrites that setting.

zersiax, @accessibleandroid @salihkn let's try that again :) Ok but what does it actually ...y'know ...do? it integrates with apps and keyboards ...then what?
soheb, Since I bought an Android phone, I bought myself an Android watch. A TicWatch Enduro.
I got it on Saturday lunchtime, and it's now Tuesday morning with 16% battery life (with the ability to go all the way down to 5%).
As someone who used an Apple Watch for about 2/3 years, I'm absolutely blown away at this thing!
pcublogue, @soheb @Tattooed_Mummy Looks great! The battery is life is something I wish Apple would resolve some day. :(
soheb, @pcublogue @Tattooed_Mummy as long as they keep putting design over function every single time, the battery issues will never be addressed imho.

protonprivacy, @Cambion At the moment, not natively, but some of our community has suggested using Obtainium to do this: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1d1o3qw/comment/l5wa83c/
Bear in mind that this method has not been officially tested nor is it endorsed by us, so if you do decide to try it, use it at your own risk.
F-droid availability is planned, but we don't have a specific timeline to confirm at the moment.
pseudonym, New #android Device. The "copy all my apps and data files over" is getting much better than it used to be, by why in the name of dog, can they not copy over notification preferences, or add a global default option to be "silent notifications"?
I have to go and manually re-mute almost all the apps.
There are a very few apps I want dinging my phone, ever. Go ahead and give me the dot, and even the one line silent notification at the top, but annoy me once with a ding I didn't need, and muted.

mkwadee, After lunch yesterday, we went to the #HistoryOfScienceMuseum in #Oxford. It’s not very big but contains some really fascinating exhibits. It is right next to the #SheldonianTheatre and well worth a visit.
Here are wooden models of the #FivePlatonicSolids.
mkwadee, To this day, trainee pilots have to master the #CircularSlideRule in order to do calculations for various tasks. Before flying was ever developed, such #SlideRules were in common use.
mkwadee,
whynothugo, I can connect this #android phone to my living room display and VLC plays videos on the external display just fine.
But how the hell do I even mount a remote filesystem to actually access video files?
ssh-keygen and sshfs might not be super newbie friendly, but at least they work. I can't find anything remotely equivalent on Android.
DenJohn, @whynothugo
It's usually something to do with links, etc. It's a mess and I don't have enough knowledge to confirm for sure.
I however do know that vlc has sftp support built in. You can see this under browse, three dots, add favorite. And I believe you can open a direct sftp url to a file under more, streams, add stream. I never used this so I wish you best of luck. I don't have much experience with streaming video from a non local server over a protocol like that.
whynothugo, @DenJohn Oh, nice, sftp support was just hidden away. This is superb, thanks!
@uichelorraine
MarSolRivas, French @BM_Bourguignon @uichelorraine Une appli un peu lente, faut pas brusquer 😅 (mais ça marche, et la lenteur n'est peut-être pas de leur fait mais du côté du Play Store)

For the best experience and to continue receiving regular updates [..], we strongly recommend updating your mobile OS as soon as possible.Yes, like I have a choice to upgrade from the vendor of my smartphone? ian, @thepanz also, looks like you could bump to 11 and be fine, per https://slack.com/help/articles/1500001836081-Slack-support-lifecycle-for-operating-systems-app-versions-and-browsers
thepanz, @ian ehehe, I would happily upgrade to PHP v8.x from 5.6 😂
Yes, I got confirmation from the maintainer and other people using the latest releases about that the new A11 is heavier on that phone.
I might test the A12 and A13 tho, maybe those will get more stable by September 🤞

rhys, Preordered a #Jolla Community Phone.
I've wanted to try non-#Android #Linux on mobile for ages and this looks like the best way to do it.
The cost is reasonable, but there's a subscription necessary after a year — which I'll pay if I still love the device and want to support Jolla still, or I'll abandon the device and use as a toy if not.
It apparently supports Android apps to some degree, but I won't mind if stuff doesn't work and prompts me toward digital hygiene.

cyberlyra, @rhys yes I have only very rarely downloaded one that won’t run as it demands Google play services. Else everything is fully functional. It can’t do threaded multiparty MMS conversations but most ppl use text apps like Signal anyway. Brush up on your red hat commands as it runs on Fedora instead of Debian. There is an active and helpful community, check out forum.jolla.org , also the CHUM and Warehouse repos and openrepos.net for community-made apps.

TRodick93, So fellow #blind #Android folks. I'm not as impressed with my Google Pixel Watch as I thought I would be, and am contemplating switching to a Samsung one. How #accessible are they with #Talkback? I have a #Pixel phone, in case that matters. Thanks in advance!
dhamlinmusic, @TRodick93 From my understanding more, the same set of accessibility issues samsung phones and tablets have vs pixel ones, samsung forks and bloat. @evilcookies98 has one I believe and was talking about getting CSR running on it.
evilcookies98, @dhamlinmusic @TRodick93 that’s right. Not to mention if you have a smaller arm, the Samsung stuff is going to feel like a brick. I’ve never owned one, but I have seen them.
