Opinions: What is a movie you genuinely like, that is rated below 60% on rotten tomatoes?

Inspired by the linked XKCD. Using 60% instead of 50% because that’s an easy filter to apply on rottentomatoes.

I’ll go first: I think “Sherlock Holmes: A game of Shadows” was awesome, from the plot to the characters ,and especially how they used screen-play to highlight how Sherlocks head works in these absurd ways.

poggerino,

The Super Mario Bros movie. It was really good but for some reason has a 59% rating on the tomato-meter, despite a 95% audience score. Very strange and it’s why I just don’t trust Rotten Tomatoes.

Throwdownyourgrandma,

Rotten Tomatoes reviews always remind me of that South Park episode where Randy is a Yelp reviewer. It feels like they take themselves way to serious and forget to just enjoy the movie they are watching.

@poggerino @thebestaquaman

You talking about the new one, or the old 80's one with John Leguizamo?

poggerino,

The new one

petrol_sniff_king,

I fucking hated that movie, but I will admit it has great vfx.

Odo,

The plot was pretty straightforward (though often rushed). I see why critics would roll their eyes at another kids movie that plays it safe like that. It’s not anywhere near the level of a Paddington or Fantastic Mr. Fox.

That said, it wasn’t really trying to be that, and was all I wanted in a Mario movie: show me you respect the franchise, add in a bunch of easter eggs and references, and be at least moderately entertaining. I just hope the eventual sequels and spinoffs aim a tad bit higher.

fritobugger2017,

Both from 1991: Hudson Hawk and Nothing But Trouble

Jacko,

Surfer, Dude. - criminally underrated and a great chill movie. Also, “get outside more” is a great theme. I dig it and wish more people did.

thepianistfroggollum,

It’s one of my favorite movies that no one has ever heard of. It’s basically just Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson being themselves.

Absurdist and slapstick comedies are often a good answer to this question. I would argue that movies like Step Brothers and Wet Hot American Summer have some comic actors doing some of their best work. But people who aren’t a fan of the genre are going to shit on those movies.

Liz,

Step Brothers got a 69% (nice) on rotten tomatoes.

Ghostalmedia,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

lol. Although critics were 55%

Odo,

Kung Pow. It’s at 13% from critics. It may not be high art, but c’mon, live a little, critics.

JargonWagon,

Comedy is usually shat on by critics. “Laughs are cheap” and all that.

maplealmond,

I remember liking Paycheck when I saw it in theaters.

ramsgrl909,

Eli, was a fun scary movie. Not sure where all the hate comes from

loz,

I am proud to say that Young Einstein is my favourite Australian movie of all time.

Excrubulent,
@Excrubulent@slrpnk.net avatar

I’m gonna have to go with Reckless Kelly over Young Einstein, but both are great. They don’t pass the “came out in my adult life” criterion, but Yahoo Serious was so good. Kind of a shame he seemed to just disappear.

I was trying to figure out which mine was and, folks… is The Man From Snowy River a Mad Max prequel?? I’m so confused now.

TheWozardOfIz,

I watch Joe Dirt more times than I like to admit.

NoGoodDevGuy,
sunbrrnslapper,

No shame - it is a great movie!

Twofacetony,

That’s why you’re a nunamaker

knyuqlr,

The New Guy! 7% tomatometer and 54% audience score. It’s still my favorite feel good movie and the funky music is amazing.

Llamajockey,

Such a weird and fun movie!

JargonWagon,

Such a classic! I was so surprised that it had such a low rotten tomato critic score.

jacktherippah,

The day after tomorrow is my guilty pleasure.

CodeInvasion,

Tenet is criminally under rated at 69%. Easily one of my favorite movies of all time.

Aesthesiaphilia,

After I watched it with subtitles, it went from a 3/10 to a 7/10 for me personally

pastermil,

I second this!

RicketyHalo,

I like the Han Solo Movie. They fucking NAILED the character, and they took a LOT of inspiration from legends, and it shows! I think the only reason people dislike the movie is because Han Solo himself wasn’t played by Harrison Ford, which uh, duh, of course he wasn’t. He doesn’t even like the character!

austinfloyd,

I mostly liked it, but it did one thing I dislike in prequel movies: attempt to explain everything. It isn’t quite as bad as the train chase from Indiana Jones and the last crusade which tries to explain all of Indy’s quirks and wardrobe choices in a 10 minute scene… But that felt like the gist of the movie to me.

Protoknuckles,

I didn’t like it because I wanted Rogue One to be a heist movie, and it wasn’t, so then I wanted this to be a heist movie, and it wasn’t and now I’m kinda thinking I’m never getting a Star Wars heist movie. 😔

Aesthesiaphilia,

Wtf you mean not a heist movie? There's like 2 heists

Sarcastik,

You need to drop everything and watch Andor right now.

CCatMan,

I agree, this movie is pretty good.

dman99,

I had friends saying things like the movie had ho reason to exist be abuse it wasn’t advancing the overarching story of the franchise. I really enjoyed Solo and loved the ending, showing Han is a cold mf and definitely shot first

Kftrendy,

Adam Sandler’s The Week Of. 26% from critics, 34% audience score, and I thought it was great. Really helped to watch it BEFORE looking up reviews - I bet if I had gone in expecting a 3/10 movie I would have felt like it was worse.

danekrae,

Bicentennial Man (1999) starring Robin Williams. It’s one of my favorites.

leavemealone,

Probably the best Asimov adaptation on screen.

mv777711,

I remember really enjoying the Van Helsing movie with Hugh Jackman as a kid. The world and weapons were really cool.

Hybers,

In the same realm, the Hansel and Gretel witch hunter movie that came out in 2013 was fun. It has a staggering 16% on rotten tomatoes

Braysl,

Dude I loved that movie so much as a kid, so much so that I made Van Helsing themed Sims 2 custom content 😂 My cousins made fun of me relentlessly for loving the movie. Then I re-watched it my first year in university and… It didn’t quite hold up but I still love the movie haha
