As if children's books aren't already losing visibility due to censorship now this...

This year Goodreads has removed all children's books categories from their Goodreads Choice Awards, meaning no more or categories. Worse, Graphic Novel & Poetry, have also been eliminated.

Here you can vote to ask them to bring those categories back:

Perhaps Amazon should be forced to resell it and IMDB. They've wrecked both and those just gather info for Amazon.
I've stopped using them because they are now useless.

@raymccarthy @franciscawrites @bookstodon They're also killing the Comixology app, so people have to use the Kindle App instead to read the comics they bought on Comixology.

Also obsessed with DRM, which affects consumers, not pirates. Trying to out-Apple Apple on Walled Gardens (Kindle Scribe PDF Annotation).

Flaw in tax system that they could build dominance in Datacentres by tax exemption on Amazon profits and take over all of these:

Regulators are asleep.

whatzaname,

@raymccarthy @beecycling @franciscawrites @bookstodon It is NOT a flaw.
It is a built-in mechanism by which those with power and wealth build and horde their wealth, wielding it against the rest of us like the weapon is.
because it is already killing us, and the rate of death is accelerating.

@raymccarthy @franciscawrites @bookstodon Amazon actually murdered a site called Shelfari where my book group lived, after cannibalizing all its data. It allowed nested discussions like Reddit.

@raymccarthy @bookstodon Goodreads is one of the few places where people without an amazon account can still post reviews to a wide audience. While amazon may use the cite to collect info, it still serves a great purpose for many, particularly young readers. It's ok if you don;t want to use it but this is a petition so it continues to be useful for those who need it most.

@bookstodon @franciscawrites @raymccarthy May I just point towards StoryGraph as an alternative.

I also use it. I use Reedsy, as well.

reviews of unpublished books, that sometimes have not even been started.
Reviews by sockpuppets.
It's as useless as Amazon branded pages for reviews now.
Also nearly impossible to get false info taken down.

@raymccarthy @franciscawrites @bookstodon I've switched to bookwyrm to track my reading (though I'm not any better about updating that than I was goodreads) and while the database is still slim, it's getting built as more people are using it, and I find I can trust the reviews a bit better.

IMO, Goodreads is as good as the people you follow/friends.
My TL is reviews from the people I follow. I trust their reviews. I have been using Goodreads for over a decade, I'm not sure it works as well for the casual user. I also like that young readers are part of the community. There are other platforms. Reedsy, StoryGraph you mentioned Bookwyrm, some people prefer them.
This is a petition o include kidlit in their awards, because kidlit is important.

worthyofareread,

@franciscawrites @Meadhbh @raymccarthy @bookstodon I started using Hardcover last month and while the database isn’t as vast as goodreads (yet, it grows everyday!) it is really nice! They are always adding new features and updates, and have plans for a new discussion section to launch soon. Not sure if they have a kidlit audience but I bet they would love to

Please remember to support the petition by voting, otherwise there's no way to let them know how unhappy we are about the removal of all children's books categories from their awards.

@franciscawrites @bookstodon I was wondering about this! Do we know why??

franciscawrites,
@franciscawrites@mastodon.scot avatar

@TarkabarkaHolgy @bookstodon
This is their explanation... as if they couldn't add 1 category without removing 5. Ridiculous...

@franciscawrites @bookstodon yeah I was wondering about Romantasy too yesterday 😆 Not much of an explanation tho...
