Warning: I am justifiably angry about capitalism and everything ruined as a result of its stranglehold on our planet. I curse about it.

Better!

I'll start paying for when they give me enough control over discoverability to stop half my feed from being videos I've already watched and the other half being videos I've already clicked "not interested" twenty times.

@WagesOf Hopefully you have your channel blocking add-on activated --blocking ai/corporate channels from reappearing in searches is nice.
I already pay for youtube. We all do. Humanity is destroyed by capitalism to enrich a few psychopaths and their wannabes. Humanity pays for everything any capitalist hoarder ever hoarded and I feel no obligation to any of them to give them anything more than what they take with the assistance of the state.
In fact, owe countless multiples of the value of their ill-gotten wealth, given the generations of abuse and slavery and violent oppression of every sort that has been used to keep the Haves having and the Have Nots obligated to do all the work.

Americans have proven to the entire world how racist and stupid they are, and I, for one, am glad the world can now see the truth and see how POORLY minorities are treated here and how much we suffer.

whatzaname,
@whatzaname@kolektiva.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 this country it's so fake it's incomprehensible to me that people in other countries ever fell for the hype... as for those of us here who fell for 'we ended slavery with the Civil War and ended racism with the Civil Rights Movement'... how could we be so stupid?! Did we just want it to be true so hard we were blind to reality? Was everyone raised as culturally/ geographical and educationally isolated as i was here in the rural Ozarks?
I trusted educators and Walter Cronkite.
I was taught by schools and that was wholly reinforced by then-mostly local media.
Even the radio stations avoided 'controversial' music, so i had no clue growing up that what i was taught was a lie.
Things weren't rapidly getting better then, and we are so far from democracy and equality still now that we shouldn't be allowed to claim them as ideals.

    Here is how I “watch YouTube” first I check that my ad blockers are on, and the extension that hides thumbnails, and the extension that gives videos more neutral titles. I look at my subscriptions and add videos to a playlist. I search for topics I’m currently concerned about. When I have about 90min of video. I shuffle the list and check the order. Then (and only then) do I get to kick back and “watch TV”

    YouTube isn’t easy to use this way.
    Anyone else do something similar?

    whatzaname,
    @whatzaname@kolektiva.social avatar

    @futurebird i just use Firefox to make youtube videos obey. I use sponsor skip as well as adblockers, But once I added those to Firefox I don't have to mess with them anymore. When I want to watch youtube I use my remote control to switch inputs to the connected windows 7 laptop, and a wireless keyboard and mouse to navigate.

    @ajsadauskas@aus.social avatar

    If you care about the planet, please make sure you sit down before you start reading this post about ExxonMobil.

    So.

    The CEO of ExxonMobil just said this in an interview: "We’ve waited too long to open the aperture on the solution sets in terms of what we need, as a society, to start reducing emissions."

    https://fortune.com/2024/02/27/exxon-ceo-darren-woods-interview-pay-the-price-for-net-zero/

    Who's the most influential voice on climate change? Who's to blame for inaction on climate change?

    According to the CEO of ExxonMobil, it's environmental activists.

    No, really:

    "Frankly, society, and the activist—the dominant voice in this discussion—has tried to exclude the industry that has the most capacity and the highest potential for helping with some of the technologies."

    Oh, and the CEO of ExxonMobil also apparently thinks consumers are to blame for climate inaction:

    "Today we have opportunities to make fuels with lower carbon, but people aren’t willing to spend the money to do that."

    Gets better.

    He thinks unnamed 'people who generate emissions' should pay for it. (Rather than, say, major transnational oil companies.)

    "People who are generating the emissions need to be aware of [it] and pay the price. That’s ultimately how you solve the problem."

    https://fortune.com/2024/02/27/exxon-ceo-darren-woods-interview-pay-the-price-for-net-zero/

    Worth including a quick reminder here that Exxon-Mobil made a US$36 billion profit in 2023: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/exxon-beats-estimates-ends-2023-with-36-billion-profit-2024-02-02/#:~:text=HOUSTON%2C%20Feb%202%20(Reuters),higher%20oil%20and%20gas%20production.

    Not gross revenue.

    Profit.

    So, remind me again. Who knew about climate change before most of the public?

    "Exxon was aware of climate change, as early as 1977, 11 years before it became a public issue... This knowledge did not prevent the company (now ExxonMobil and the world’s largest oil and gas company) from spending decades refusing to publicly acknowledge climate change and even promoting climate misinformation."

    https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/exxon-knew-about-climate-change-almost-40-years-ago/

    And just who, exactly, stood in the way reducing emissions all these years?

    "ExxonMobil executives privately sought to undermine climate science even after the oil and gas giant publicly acknowledged the link between fossil fuel emissions and climate change, according to previously unreported documents...

    "The new revelations are based on previously unreported documents subpoenaed by New York’s attorney general as part of an investigation into the company announced in 2015. They add to a slew of documents that record a decades-long misinformation campaign waged by Exxon, which are cited in a growing number of state and municipal lawsuits against big oil."

    The lady at the farm across the street said she'd bring her stock tank in to the greenhouse tomorrow.

    4 years I've been here, and this was across the street and I was so depressed I was too scared to go in.

    I looked through my seed box today. Natives that I don't even know how to propagate, precious rare things from the world that most people don't know is dying.

    Calochortus amabilis. Lilium rubescens. Iris fernaldii. The local variant of yarrow (the yarrow in most wildflower mixes are very weedy, people don't even KNOW about the incredible diversity that means one mountain's plants of one species behave very differently from the next mountain over, only the botanists are paying attention everybody else woosh right over their heads).

    I only got to work at the nursery for 3 months and then I was fired. Felt like a rug pulled out from under me. I didn't know I'd been doing badly. I want so much to help, to learn propagation and get those pipevines going-- how many employees are that dedicated to their work but it wasn't enough they fired me without trying to warn me I was falling short which makes me think they didn't want to talk to me to work it out because I'm too weird or annoying and just not worth it.

    I took it hard, leaving Santa Rosa. So much was right at my fingertips there, amazing opportunities and I screwed it up and I had to retreat and I've been on this couch doing nothing real or useful and no income for 4 years.

    It hurts so much I can't breathe. I'm so scared, every day. I spend most of my time disassociating, to be completely frank. I am not good at life. It's humiliating. So many important ideas in my head and I can't figure out how to follow through and get to work on them even if I had resources. I've tried so many times and the people I thought were friends gave up on me or got sick of me so many times.

    One actually said, "I'm not going to follow you into codependency". I felt like I'd been kicked in the gut. Codependency? Really? I mean I know our society is bad at community but I don't want to overdo it either. No seriously all I'm trying to do is build a healthy community here, let me know what I'm not getting right, I want to figure this out but it's like asking that is... Too weird? I'm doing it wrong. I mean I'm not asking for the emotional equivalent of kidney donations here, I swear, just, a mutual support network?

    The last thing I want, is to be a liability to the communities I want to contribute to. But the thing is a whole lot of us are very damaged you know, and we haven't been taught how to deal with ourselves OR each other. This is hard. And honestly I'm just a garden variety ADHD depressive, not even any substance issues-- if I seem like too much work, you have not SEEN how deep this can get. I'm not going to cringe from people just because they're going through a lot. We all have limited bandwidth but on average, as a whole, people in general are abandoning each other too much and this is where the rubber meets the road, where we skid out completely or survive.

    I want to help grow things and get along and make it work. That's all I want in life. I'm going to keep trying.

    whatzaname,
    @whatzaname@kolektiva.social avatar

    @violetmadder being with people when it is uncomfortable is something we are taught to avoid. I think getting comfortable with being uncomfortable sometimes, is an important practice. It is really awkward sometimes. But we need people to keep trying. But also, the tryers seem happiest when at least some in their communities are also willing to try. I hope you and your nearest fellow tryers find each other soon! Meanwhile, i think a few tryers hang out here on the socials, at least.
