@normand I am curious about your Canadian perspective on winter-cycling. How much do people think you are crazy when you use your bicycle at temperatures below 5°C? Or is this just a German thing?
@hollma unfortunately, it’s not only a German thing. Most people here think I’m courageous, or crazy. Very few cyclists and bike commuters continue #cycling in the winter (which starts in November here).
In my cycling club, everybody stops cycling when temperatures go below 5°C. Although fatbiking is very popular here in the Québec province, it’s mostly a leisure activity done in dedicated outdoors centres.
On the other hand, roads here are unfriendly to cyclists, because snow is plowed on the sides of streets and roads, reducing their width. Luckily, my city maintains a few main bike paths, and one happens to be along my commute. The rest of my route is on residential, low speed streets, and only ~300m on a busy boulevard.
Winter maintenance is an issue. It’s what stopped me for years from cycling all year round. I cannot wash my bike outside when it’s below zero… I’m still working on it!
