Buying a gravel bike last summer is changing how I ride somewhat. I used to pretty much never do "routes", to go out just purely to ride some particular route through. I've always been an A->B or leisure rider, cruising around town for hours. These days I more and more go out also to do a route I've done many times again, trying to get better results on it.

What next, tight cycling wear and a road bike? :P Is this my midlife crisis?

Broke a record today on a nice route I've rode few times this year, up the hills of Herttoniemi, then through Viikki and Pasila to Hermannin rantatie using the fabulous new cycling "baana's". A new average speed record for 20km of 24.96km/h (beating 24.44km/h over 21.77km to Kontula and back), with a max speed of 44.19km/h (going down along Viikintie).

Hopefully tomorrows service fixes the clicking noise that happens currently a few times per rotation. The last thing that hasn't been checked/changed is the bottom bracket, which will be replaced tomorrow. Embarrassing overtaking other cyclists 😅

I have a theory about why every social media post about either cyclist or biker safety immediately gets swamped by really angry car drivers who want to kill us, and it comes down to ignorance.
Most cyclists and bikers are also car drivers, so we can see both points of view.
Most car drivers are only car drivers, which makes it harder to understand the different points of view. Learning to drive a car should include some time on 2 wheels.

@CloudyMrs maybe if they paid a fair share of the road construction and maintenance. I mean the drivers.

So yeah, I guess it's finished! I've put the third wheel into the bike accessories drawer, I've put the cargo cover I sewed onto the higher-accessibility accessories shelf (first order retrieval is my friend), and ...

yeah! I guess we're done!

(Well... other than maybe sewing a reflector onto the cargo cover. It's pretty damn visible with that safety orange cover, but... just to be sure. xD )

Took me long enough, but hey, I got there. :D

@pokeypoke I do! There are multiple sellers of such things on eBay and Amazon! This one in particular (which is fine so far, I mean, it's just bungee cord) I got with credit union rewards points here:

Today, I was riding on a multi use path, on a segment that is right next to (and level with) a road - this stretch is basically a really wide bike lane. Ahead of me, a city employee came up, pulled off the road and on to the path and parked. The only option to go around him involved riding on the road, in the opposite direction of traffic. Thankfully, no one was coming, so I did just that.

@younata There are rules when an emergency vehicle is allowed to turn on the sirens and then break various laws. Sometimes you must go faster than the speed limit, run red lights and other such terrible things because there is an emergency. However most of the time such an emergency doesn't exist and emergency vehicles are supposed to obey all traffic laws (if they don't they should get a ticket). If the city is actively working on the path they have reason to block it, but otherwise they should be towed just like any other vehicle.

I found me a used Townie 3i for way cheap in semi-perfect condition with a custom red seat. Scored big because this is the bike I wanted. The color is a bonus! ❤️ It just needs a bath and will be good as new.

The no-parking areas being imposed on cities by the bike-sharing companies and city councils seem intended to destroy and ridicule the notion that rental e-bikes are a ‘last mile solution.’

I just had to drop a bike 1.8km from my house, after a 7.6km journey home.

Needless to say, countless private cars parked on public pavements in the 1.8km in between.

Little improvements like this make such a big difference. I think this is my favourite new little link in the Hamilton cycling network. Nothing fancy. Just a short extension to the well-used Cootes Drive multi-use path to get you into downtown Dundas.

one note on the map that I did think about: the lowest-grade red and green lines are distinguishable in black and white. the red lines use dashes, the green are dots with narrower spacing between.

the legend in this version didn’t make that super clear but I’ve revised the source to fix that.

Also I did some test prints over the weekend, and the green lines print fine. Even at lowered resolution (to fit on 11x17" paper for example) they're distinct from red dash sharerow markers.

Hard to be sure what did this. Can't rule out the possibility it was a scofflaw cyclist.

@wesley that's not how bollards are supposed to work. Definitely doesn't look solid or concrete-filled, those would not have bent.

Another
fantastic cycle around Eastbourne today, with over 200 of us, including many great very young cyclists! Most people friendly and waving, though of course a few irate car drivers … who seem to think of children on bikes as the enemy..

Anyway, it was great; nothing better than cycling in a large group in the sun. Couldn’t photograph whilst cycling - this is just before take off
