Two questions for you out there:

  1. If you only had one studded tire, would you put it front or back? Does anyone regularly run with just one studded tire?

Somewhat relatedly
2. I’ve got an old rear wheel for a 9-speed bike. What would I have to do to use it as a spare wheel for a single speed bike? do I have to rebuild the whole thing because the free hub is too wide to fit in the track dropouts?

@scottsthoughts
I was always taught if you only have one studded tire, it goes on the front. If you lose traction sideways in front, you almost always go down, losing traction in back may fishtail, but its more recoverable. Someone with better academic understanding of the physics of bicycling could better explain.

@MartyCormack @scottsthoughts riding a bike is a matter of constantly steering to keep the front wheel under where the bike is going. If your front wheel is sliding, you can't easily steer it. You can shift your weight to recover from a little skid but it can very quickly go completely out from under you. The rear wheel has less to say about which way you're going, so you can drag it as long as you can steer and it doesn't slide too far sideways at once, it gets pulled back to the center.

@scottsthoughts 1, Front. Losing traction on the rear is easy to recover, front is not. Compare how long you can control the slide when you squeeze the rear brake and when you squeeze the front.

  1. The sprockets might be too tight together for the single-speed chain to fit. Otherwise I recommend measuring and checking.

@dcz @scottsthoughts good point on chain thickness. If the width works, you can get spacers and a sprocket to make it a single speed cassette.
