Hey !

This Saturday, myself and almost 40 other wonderful folks are setting off on our 400 mile journey by bike from to . is a fundraiser for the Boston Cyclists Union which funds their ongoing advocacy efforts to build a safe, connected, all-ages and abilities bike network in Boston.

If you are willing and able to contribute, I'm still pretty far from my fundraising goal, and your donations are tax deductable! https://secure.qgiv.com/event/bostreal2024/account/1708966

One thing that always bugs me in tech is when I’m editing code someone else wrote but need to wholesale move a block so it then looks like I wrote it. Then people code review it and I look like an idiot for using a bad pattern that I didn’t even write.

Hey ! Super last minute offer, but it's a lovely evening out and I'd like to practice my photography skills. Specifically, I'm looking to do portraits of people on bikes.

I'll be at North Point Park from 6:45 to 8 pm tonight, Monday May 6th, with my camera if you'd like some nice quality photos of you and your bike.

Totally free, photos are yours to keep, just find the guy with the camera, satchel, and purple helmet walking around and say hi!

Had two folks take me up on last night; the first asked not to be tagged on socials so I won’t share theirs, but my good friends Laura and Watson showed up! Go follow watsonthebikedog on Instagram for more of this adorable backpack bike boy.

It's April 19th and welcome to BikeNite! Thanks for joining, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about cycle stuff! Feel free to answer whenever at your convenience. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility.

We'll start out with our introduction:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? What's going on in your cycle-world?

scottsthoughts,
@scottsthoughts@better.boston avatar

@ascentale A1: also checking in to from Somerville just a few blocks from Boston. Tonight in my bike world is some light maintenance replacing frayed cables turned into a rather large scale repaint project. I’m very pleased with how this is coming along so far! Rain forecast for tomorrow but hopefully I’ll get another section done Sunday and hoping to have this rebuilt by next weekend for riding!

This quirky little building at Mass/Cedar/Cameron currently houses a law firm, but in its masonry heart yearns to provide Community Pathside retail

@bikepedantic a coffee shop there would make bank! though I'm sure the rent is absurd.

Very much in "if you give a mouse a cookie" territory in bike maintenance right now.
"Oh I need to run new cables"
"Well I've been meaning to replace my front derailleur so I should do that now too"
"Oh this cable housing is pretty worn I should replace it..."
"...which means I also need new bar tape"
"Huh my chainring is a little worn, should I change that too?"
"I mean if I'm changing my chain ring and front derailleur, maybe I should just get a whole new groupset..."

Rode the Midnight Marathon last night for the first time in 9 years. It was rainy and wet and yet the roads both to and from Boston were filled with far more bikes than cars the whole way. It's truly an impressive organic event, and shows that Boston is indeed a biking city.

Every time I drive in the city, I am further radicalized against cars. Had to carry a load that was slightly too challenging for the cargo bike for a job tonight… and now I’m looking at bike trailers (for the cargo bike).

Anyway I’m now taking cargo trailer recommendations and tips & tricks!

Whoa what is this? The blue line is running sub 5 minute headways right now? It’s almost like we’re a real city!

I think my biggest takeaway from my Copenhagen trip is: their bike network, by and large, works because it exists - sure, there are some bike signals and cool bridges and such, but that’s not what makes it work. It’s the fact that I can turn down just about any street and find a bike lane or see the street is slow enough to ride it the main lane. It means I don’t have to strategically plan my journey or pick a destination that’s bikeable. We don’t need fancy, we just need extant.

@scottsthoughts has a question about carrying food:

Q6. How do you transport takeout food by cycle? I hit so many bumps on my ride that it’s usually pretty well jostled by the time it gets home.

Also if anyone has a good idea for transporting a straw hat I’m all ears for that too.

scottsthoughts,
@scottsthoughts@better.boston avatar

@moira @ascentale @scottsthoughts what do you use for padding in your basket? Also sounds like the consensus is I need one of those bungee mesh things!

Controversial take - I am pro speakers. I occasionally enjoy listening to music when I ride, and I'm usually delighted when someone passes me blasting music on their speaker. It's just a fun time! It also prevents me from sneaking up on people and is less startling than a bell to announce your presence.

What are those products that you found out about later in life that have felt magical or been game changers for you? The two that come to mind for me

  1. Bar keeper's friend - You mean my sheet pans don't have to look like shit after they've seen a normal amount of wear and tear?
  2. Tub o' towels (or other heavy duty wipes presumably) - I used to scrub and scrub and never quite get grease off my hands. One quick wipe and it's gone.

Went to go see The Interrobangers from Company One tonight at BPL (did you know they have a theater in the basement?). I enjoyed it a lot; it’s a modern riff on scooby doo except the characters are actually explicitly queer this time. Sharing because this show deserves a bigger audience than it had tonight.

Also, for the covid cautious, Sunday shows are masks required.

Two questions for you out there:

  1. If you only had one studded tire, would you put it front or back? Does anyone regularly run with just one studded tire?

Somewhat relatedly
2. I’ve got an old rear wheel for a 9-speed bike. What would I have to do to use it as a spare wheel for a single speed bike? do I have to rebuild the whole thing because the free hub is too wide to fit in the track dropouts?

Progression of regret this evening:
“Hmmm I want ice cream I’ll order from scoop and scootery”
“Oh I should get a bigger size so i have leftovers!”
order arrives
“Ok I’m just gonna eat half of this”
“Ok maybe just a few more bites”
“Oh that’s not enough left to save I should just finish it”
“Oh no I have eaten too much ice cream and my stomach hurts”

I’m trying to put up a theatrical show but having trouble finding venues. Does anyone know a theater in the area that meets the following criteria?

  1. Does rentals by the hour (rather than day/week)
  2. Capacity roughly between 40 and 250
  3. Has full lighting and sound capabilities
  4. Is within a 15 minute walk of a T station
  5. (Ideally) serves alcohol

Folks who have gone from having a car to being , what has your experience been like? Pro/Con, unexpected benefits and challenges? I am already very car-lite, but the final plunge is scary.

More personal details in thread for the curious.

scottsthoughts,
@scottsthoughts@better.boston avatar

I mostly get around via bike(s), and I already own a (manual) cargo bike and a standard size ebike which are largely touted as car replacements. My remaining use cases for the car are:

  1. Transporting other people (about once a week)
  2. Getting to hiking spots (about twice a month)
  3. Transporting dog (about once a month)
  4. Transporting bulky cargo (quarterly or less; only when I cannot accomplish with cargo bike)
  5. Traveling out of town (usually 2-3x per year)
